P: Today we celebrate all that God has done in and through the people of this church. L: We are all called by God through Jesus to love God and love others. P: Today we celebrate all the ways we love. All: We pray for God s blessings on all of our efforts, and we thank God all God s goodness. * Opening Prayer Liturgist Dear God of all persons, who created us to depend on finding our delight in partnership with one another, we worship you. We are grateful for the pleasure that comes in partnering with You and with others. May we continue to build relationships with others on the foundation of Your love through Jesus Christ. We rejoice in your Church, who work together to share love each day in all that they do. Amen. 2 What Is Ministry? John 21: (CEB) Liturgist: 15 When they finished eating, Jesus asked Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? Simon replied, Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. 16 Jesus asked a second time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Simon replied, Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Jesus said to him, Take care of my sheep. 17 He asked a third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter was sad that Jesus asked him a third time, Do you love me? He replied, Lord, you know everything; you know I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. 18 I assure you that when you were younger you tied your own belt and walked around wherever you wanted. When you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and another will tie your belt and lead you where you don t want to go. 19 He said this to show the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After saying this, Jesus said to Peter, Follow me. PASTOR: Leader: We are a vibrant church that loves God, grows together, and serves others. People: We are fed with the Living Word; we feed others physically and spiritually. Leader: We follow Jesus, growing together in love. People: In the name of Jesus we serve others as we put their needs above our own. Song/Choir/special music Choir: You Are My King Why is it Important for Us to Minister? 1 Peter 4: 8-11 (CEB) Pastor: 8 Above all, show sincere love to each other, because love brings about the forgiveness of many sins. 9 Open your homes to each other without complaining. 10 And serve each other according to the gift each person has received, as good managers of God s diverse gifts. 11 Whoever speaks should do so as those who speak God s word. Whoever serves should do so from the strength that God furnishes. Do this so that in everything God may be honored through Jesus Christ. To him be honor and power forever and always. Amen. 3 People: Because of God s love, we strive to grow together and serve others. Leader: God has given us all that we need to serve - gifts, strength, and love. People: All that we do is to the glory of God through Jesus working within us. Song/Choir/special music Praise Team: W&S 3028 Holy is The Lord Praise Team & Choir: Days of Elijah Message for Life SLIDE ONE How Do We Minister? MINISTER I looked up the word Minister. What do you think it means 1. To be a minister and 2. To minister? Get answers to 1. Explain: a minister can be a clergy person yes., and also a man or woman of God. In the UM church we believe in the Priesthood of all believers in other words we are called as ministers. Get answers to 2. Explain: To attend to the needs of someone. To tend to, care for, take care of, look after, assist, attend to. I also found that the word minister, from the Middle English, Old French, and Latin meant an attendant, servant, and a priest s assistant. It was even meant to mean a slave.

4 So how then, do we do this work? How do we minister? We are all called to this. Called by the Creator God to love and to serve others. Even being a slave to others. In our world today the word slave gives us a bad taste in our mouths. It s got a negative vibe. We don t want anyone to be a slave! But we are all truly enslaved to many things. Some are slaves to jobs. Others are slaves to alcohol or food. Even some are slaves to drama. Think about it for a minute. SLIDE TWO And then think of God calling us to be a slave to others. A slave of love, of forgiveness, of opening our homes to one another without complaint, looking after others, of speaking God s words not quoting scripture, but speaking love and grace and hope! How can we do this when we have so many other responsibilities as well? When our families need us as much as the homeless in our communities. When our jobs are demanding of our time, even more than those who are lonely and alone in our neighborhoods.

5 When we feel that we cannot give one more ounce of ourselves...god is calling us to give more? The secret is that if we try to do this on our own, we won t be able to. But when we allow God s power to work in us and thru us, to give us strength, we ARE able - to do more than we ever thought. To forgive more, to spend more time with others, to look after people, to take our focus from ourselves. To serve with joy and love. SLIDE THREE The work of the church belongs not to the pastor (who is the guide and shepherd) but to the people. The church would not be the church any other way, but in ministering, in doing ministry. And God gives us all the strength we need! Today we celebrate the ministries of this church. Those ministries that nurture each of us, that help strengthen us for the work. The ministries of outreach which are those where we look after others, assist others, care for others who may not be in our families, but are a part of the big family of God. We celebrate also the ministries of witness which speak God s words of love and grace

6 and hope in different ways within our community. We thank God for our call to minister and for the strength and power that God gives. Let us join together in our Prayer and Praise litany followed by the Lord s Prayer. Help us be more worthy builders and users of these resources, more grateful participants with you in all that is creative and conserving in our world.
