2 Dear Friends, It seems that celebration has been a key theme for in my life recently. In addition to the celebration of the Royal Wedding in which the nation, it seems rejoiced, we too witnessed our friends getting married, although theirs was not televised, it was just as good a celebration. I am now a Major in The Salvation Army which has brought its own celebrations, and it seems that every celebration, be that birthdays, weddings, achievements needs to have cake!!! 3 To keep the youngsters busy and on the theme of the corps Anniversary New Trimmings! Congratulations to Richard on his promotion to Major. It is 15 years since his commissioning and ordination as a Salvation Army Officer and the Corps made a real celebration of it with refreshments following the morning meeting and an amazing cake, made by Steph. Captain Jo has to wait another two years. The Major commented that the word major usually precedes such words as disaster or catastrophe, but so far, so good, there has been nothing of that sort since he and Jo have been here in Wycombe. They will also be celebrating their fourteenth wedding anniversary on Tuesday and we congratulate them on that also. Praying that in the years ahead for both of them, they will be blessed by God, both in their marriage and in their service for Him. Page 14 Page 3

4 Five Intrepid Campers During the Half Term four of our young people, and Georgine who was on the staff, enjoyed an exciting time at the Divisional Children s Camp. Here are their reports. When I went to Children s camp we went on the giant swing, crate stacking and we made catapults and much more. I made loads of friends. We had a campfire and film night. On film night we watched Madagascar 3. By Tiegan Leonard. At Children s Camp, we learnt about John the Baptist. I made lots of new friends called Rhianna, Tadiwa and Chloe-May. We did lots of activities such as the postmans walk, which is like high ropes, a giant swing, giant catapult making, bush craft, zip wire and crate stacking. I really enjoyed children s camp. By Esther Thompson The One Can Food Trust has a special appeal for the summer holiday. Lots of families need food parcels during this time because their children don t get free school meals when the schools are closed. It is suggested that every day in July until the school holiday begins contributors put into a box an item of food or a 1 coin and on either Saturday 20th July from 10 a.m. until noon, or on Thursday 24th July between 9.30 a.m and 4.30 p.m. deliver the box to the One Can Trust warehouse at 118 Duke Street. HP13 6EE Items urgently needed are tinned potatoes, tinned meat meals, tinned ham, tinned peas, tinned sweetcorn, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, corned beef, pasta sauce, long-life/uht milk, biscuits, jam, toothbrushes, shampoo and shower gel. Even if you cannot commit to this scheme, anything you can give will be much appreciated. Love Wycombe Pentecost gathering on the Rye This event was well under way by the time I found somewhere to park and arrived to join with possibly a couple of thousand others (including most of my family) It was lively and joyful as the churches of Wycombe celebrated the birth of the Church at Pentecost. Many stayed for a picnic lunch afterwards and enjoyed the sunshine. Page 4 Page 13

Changes in Salvation Army Leadership Coming up this summer Dates for your diary June 4th Youth Chorus Rehearsal I thought this was a lovely image from the farewell meeting to General Andre Cox and the welcome meeting for the High Council. Here you see, amongst all the illustrious officers from around the world, a small child taking up the whole attention of her grandparents, the current General and the World leader of Women s Ministry. Completely unaware of the Importance and grandness of the occasion, she just wanted a cuddle, and during the meeting ran to the platform and was lifted up several times for a little personal moment. Later in the week, and following the deliberations of the High Council, the announcement was made that Commissioner Brian Peddle had been elected as the new General and he then chose Commissioner Lyndon Buckingham as Chief of Staff. r-l. Les is no longer able to drive and his mobility is not the best. His daughter, with whom he lives, belongs to All Saints Church and has been taking Les there. I don t know what the possibilities are that he could be brought here sometimes. If anyone could help in that way, perhaps enquiries could be made for some arrangement to be made. 6 Corps Anniversary Report and photos by Sarah On Saturday evening the room was full of excited energy. After our fish and chip supper Richard the quiz master recreated Who wants to be a millionaire Army style with the different ranks of the army. The varied questions suited all ages and glancing around the room throughout everyone was involved in giving the answers a go when asking the audience. There were smiles and laughter all round! All the teams did well. First up was Barry and Sue, then Keith and myself joined ranks. Lastly the YP joined up and did much better than the grownups! It was a fantastic, fun evening.. Be Still prayer event on the 6 th July will be hosted by High Wycombe corps. The first event took place in January at Maidenhead and proved to be a worthwhile event. There will be various interactive prayer stations around the hall, food provided and Mike Rosevear (Maidenhead), Major Ray Brown (DHQ) and Capt. Richard would lead the evening through. There will be a light refreshment provided at a small cost, but the idea for this is to encourage people to take time out of their busy schedule and be still before God. The timing for this evening will be from 6pm to 9pm. The Corps Picnic is to take place following the morning meeting on the 22 nd July. The location of this is to be confirmed, but either the Rye or Hughenden is the likely venue. The Holiday Club will take place on Wednesday 25 th July through to Friday 27 th July with a celebration on Sunday 29 th July. This will take place before Lighthouse. It was felt that it may be more difficult to do a whole week this year because of when the holidays start and also with our young people going to summer schools and holidays that we would host the holiday club at the beginning of the school holidays. Harvest: It was agreed that Paul Fey would be contacted to lead the Harvest Quiz on Saturday 6th October and that Hazel would contact him. Soldier Classes: Capt. Richard shared that he is about to lead soldier classes for one couple and that other people have expressed an interest in becoming soldiers at the corps. Date of Next Meeting: Agreed to be 12 th September 2018 at the quarters Closing Prayer: Capt. Jo thanked everyone for all that they contribute and closed in prayer. Coming Soon.It has occurred to yours truly, the editor, that many in our fellowship do not have long Army backgrounds and that some of the Army jargon, symbols etc. may be puzzling. I am hoping that Claude will be doing a new series on the Generals of the S.A. and I will be bringing a not so trivial trivia about the Army item each month. Page 11 Page 6

7 Easter: Easter was a good success, although it was shared that it was a shame not as many attended the Maundy Thursday supper and service as this was a special evening. We also shared about it being a shame that the cross had to come down immediately after the Good Friday service as it was being used for churches together. CO s suggested looking at getting a new cross for churches together to use for next year. Youth Events: Money has been raised from Melinda selling items on a Friday morning which has helped in funding children attending both the Children s camp in the May bank holiday and also towards the costs of those who will be attending the Belfast Summer school. On Sunday the anniversary meeting was based upon faith, hope and love and was an uplifting and celebratory meeting. Tiegan read 1 Corinthians 13 beautifully and we were reminded that love is the greatest of all. Captain Jo asked us to write on plastic balls the things we were most thankful to God for and then we threw them for the children to catch! Family, friendships, chocolate and coffee were some of the things chosen to thank the Lord our Saviour for. The corps too are currently hosing a bi-monthly worship event to encourage both our youth and those from other corps. Capt. Jo stated that this is a good way of working together with other corps to encourage the youth and that we would be happy for this to be hosted at other corps, but for now it is at High Wycombe. The first event has been held and had 12 people attend with a worship group from Maidenhead leading the singing and DYS David Perkins sharing the Word. It was a good evening and the next event will be on the 10th June. Events Co-ordinator: It was mentioned that events at the corps do not appear to be as well advertised as they perhaps ought to be. This was agreed, and a volunteer to be in charge of advertising the events at the corps would be mentioned from this meeting. Upcoming Events: The Corps Anniversary will be led by the CO s, who will host a Who wants to be a General? evening on the Saturday, which is a quiz based on the popular tv show Who wants to be a Millionaire. This will include a fish supper Love Wycombe event was mentioned and while the CO s are supportive of it, decided to keep the morning meeting time at the corps the same, but would strive to go to the Rye for the churches together Pentecost praise afterwards. The two pictures below are not from the anniversary, but they just cried out to be included. The meeting was about creation and the first picture is the children trying to make something from all sorts of odds and ends. Then they were asked to make something from nothing, as God did when He created all things. Although they looked a little nonplussed at first, they soon drew together and made a group hug. It did not work well as an illustration of the point Captain Jo was trying to make, but I found it incredibly moving as they joined together for mutual support in a difficult situation.. Hazel is currently putting together the Adult and Family Sunday meeting on the 10 th June and inviting various people of all ages to take part during the meeting. Music for a Summer s evening on the 30th June is going ahead, even though this has not been advertised as of yet. Capt. Richard said that he would approach the section leaders along with Capt. Jo to see if they could take part and also other soloists that may wish to take part. Some light refreshments would be made available to make it a relaxed evening as it was last year. Page 10 Page 7

8 Claude s Column Thine Be the Glory, Risen, Conquering Son At Eastertide in 1774, John Wesley was preaching in the potteries in Staffordshire. It is not clear what hymn he had actually called for, but the crowd he had gathered started to sing Handel s tune from his opera Judas Maccabeus to the words See the conquering hero comes. First performed in 1746, Handel s opera tells the story from the Apocrypher of the leader of the Jews, Judas Maccabeus, who led an army against the Syrians and restored worship at the temple in Jerusalem. But Wesley, who had previously said he had no time for Handel, seems to have heard the tune for the first time that Easter and commented: I know not when I have heard so agreeable a sound. Now this tune seems inseparable from the triumphant words of Edmond Budry s Easter hymn, Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son. Edmond Budry, a Swiss pastor, originally wrote the words in French and it was published in 1904 for the YMCA Hymn Book. It made such an impression on Richard Hoyle, a young Baptist minister from England, who spoke twelve languages, including French, that he translated it into English. Budry was born in Vevey and studied theology in Lausanne and was a pastor at Cully and Saine-Croix between 1881 and He then became pastor of the Free Church in Vevy for a further 35 years, retiring in Handel s music has been a big factor in making the words so popular. In an edition of London Life from around the time Budry s words were first being heard in English, there is a description of the tune being played in the streets of the capital. On Sunday evenings, marching behind a cross, a brass band and a choir would appear, all dressed in white surplices, rounding up stragglers from the highways and byways and leading them to the church of St Mary at Hill. This pied piper of Edwardian London was the evangelist Wilson Carlile. It was, by the way, Wilson Carlile who, in 1882, pioneered the Church Army. Founded on the model of the Salvation Army, the Church Army is an evangelical outreach of the Church of England comprising an organisation of lay evangelists which operates in the slums of London. After a two-year residential course of training, students are commissioned as officers. The men are called captains and the women sisters. Later it became primarily concerned with social work and rehabilitation. This adjunct of the Church of England is still active, not only within the UK, but also in other countries, including the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, the Caribbean and East Africa. Page 8 High Wycombe Corps Council Meeting Minutes 9 th May 2018 Present: Capt. Richard Thompson, Keith Morris, Hazel Morris, Trevor Steventon, Barrie Oliver, May Mounsher, Carol Gibson Apologies: Harold Richardson, Georgina Harkcom Devotions: These were led by Capt. Richard Minutes of Last Meeting & Matters Arising: These were agreed with no further issues to be raised Safe Mission: We shared how the new Data Protection would affect our corps, but essentially we need to keep the documents that we have on people in a secure place and people able to access whatever information that we have about them and that we are very clear as to what we do with their information. The corps directory is ok as it is very clear as to what that would be used for before people gave their consent to have their details printed. A fire drill does need to take place as we have not been as efficient as we should have been for this. It will need to take place for the activities during the week as well. Capt. Richard would take responsibility for this. Concern was raised as to DBS and Food Hygiene checks as well as First Aiders. Capt. Richard said that he would look into this with Hazel to find out the expiry dates and organise the re-training that is required as it was felt that the expiry dates for all of these would be by the end of July Property: The property service desk organised someone to inspect the hall property. It has been recommended that the fire door in the band room is replaced, as are the windows in the YP hall. We also had a fuse in the ladies toilet cause some smoke which we were able to deal with and an electrician came to replace and fix the light fixture. Finance & Annual Appeal: It was shared that the corps is currently on mission support that totals 16,500 each year. While this is an investment that HQ are putting into the corps, it was discussed the importance of how we reduce this figure. We shared about how as a corps we could raise income which could include events such as a table top sale, car wash day, an auction of promises as well as an increase in cartridge giving. It was agreed that this deficit should be shared with the corps as people in the corps could give good ideas to deal with this issue. It was also felt that the money from the standing days that are scheduled at Loudwater Tesco on 17th June and Amersham Tesco on 17 th August go towards the corps funds. Keith said that he would look into another standing day at Morrisons, hopefully for September, where money for that would go towards the big collection. The extra issue that we have with the door to door collection in September is that more and more houses have notices on the door indicating that they do not want cold calls, which must be adhered to and ignoring this would mean that we are breaking the law. This prevents us from knocking on their door and so will affect our collecting targets. Page 9
