Dear Friends, Welcome to the July/August edition of Enterprise. It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the year. However, looking on the bright side, it heralds summer and at the risk of tempting fate this summer looks to be a good one Another problem with the latter part of the year is thinking of a theme. Having Easter and Pentecost in the first part of the year, it was quite easy and I think it is a tad early to discuss Christmas. But then really, is this not a time to reflect without any specific focus. Summer is a time to take things easy, to enjoy the warm evenings, the light nights and the garden in full bloom oh, and the grass that is in constant need of cutting! We should also take time to reflect and thank God for the good things we have. In our hectic lives, with so much going on and with so much going on in the World particularly the unrest that seems to be escalating we can easily become overwhelmed. So my message is simple, to take some time out to enjoy the season to smell the roses. We should try and find a special time each day to take time out and have some quiet time and to count our blessings. By the time you are reading this we should have finalised our part of the Pastorate Profile. I thank all of you who took the time to review it. The document can be described as the C.V. for the church. The next step is to integrate our part with Marlow s to produce a profile for the Joint Pastorate. The aim is still to complete the process to enable the Vacancy to be declared in September. A meeting has been arranged in July with Marlow Elders Have a lovely summer Contact Us Minister (Interregnum) Tel: minister@maidenheadurc.org.uk Secretary James Gibb, John Holton secretary@maidenheadurc.org.uk Treasurer Gordon Campbell Tel: treasurer@maidenheadurc.org.uk Administrator Linda NightingaleTel: between 9.00am & 5.30pm Monday, Wednesday and (Friday 9-2) administrator@maidenheadurc.org.uk Lettings Co-ordinator Sue Cuttance Tel: lettings@maidenheadurc.org.uk Attendant Speakers for the months Of July and August The Last Word Mo: How do we know that Samson was a great Comedian? 3 Youth and Family The Lighter Side On Friday 18 th July in the evening our young people will be cooking and serving a meal to which the whole of the Church family is invited. The start time for the meal is 7pm and there is a sign up sheet in the link. Please let us know if you are coming so that we know how many to cater for. I really think that you have some serious faith issues! Before we know it the summer holidays will be upon us and being the organized bunch that we are in Junior church we have got a rota sorted to cover this. It will be two groups Crèche and a combined group for the older children. Talking of Crèche I m sure you would agree that it is wonderful that we have had one nearly every week this year, with this in mind would any of you be willing to help from time to time? There have been some weeks when we have had trouble making sure that we have had enough leaders on and would be very grateful of the extra help. If you are able please speak to Maggie. As already mentioned the summer holidays are almost here and this means holiday clubs. Larchfield is Tuesday 29 th July Friday 1 st August and is all about Heroes, thanks to those who have agreed to come and help. 18 Also don t forget Desert Adventures summer club here at West Street is Monday 11 th Friday 15 th August which is following the adventures of Joseph and Moses. 3 (cont d)
There is a sign up sheet for helpers in the link on the church notice board, so if you are able please put your name down it can be one day or all five. Also if you want to help and don t fancy being in the hall we always require someone in the kitchen or on reception at the start each morning, or perhaps you can t make the week then I m sure there will be some cutting that needs doing, just speak to me. Finally if you know of any children aged 51/2 to 12 who think would like to come along and bring a couple of friends, then tell them all about it and get them signed up. Vacancy Update Our Church profile has been completed and made available for everyone to view and/or comment. The next step is to integrate our part with Marlow s to produce a profile for the Joint Pastorate. The aim is still to complete the process to enable the vacancy to be declared in September. A meeting has been arranged in July with Marlow Elders. Thanks for all your support and prayers for the work. God Bless Alice Friendship Group Looking back to the last day of April, some of our Group went to see the Maidenhead Musical Comedy Society s production of Rogers and Hammerstein s The King and I. Everyone agreed it was a great show worthy of the West End. The beautiful songs reminded us of Yul Bryner and Deborah Kerr - happy memories of another era. A wonderful evening and even now I keep saying etc., etc., etc., something the king kept saying. We will be going to see Anything Goes in October so please tell Pam Breen if you wish to see this show. : Pam : 4 17
Mike Wallace Sunday 1st June saw our final (?) Visit from Mike Wallace who has been ministering to us from time to time over the years. He has now moved to new pastures and is the minister to a church in Staffordshire Much loved and sought after by our congregation, here are a few photo s taken by Lyn on that final day. We welcomed Hannah Clifton to our first meeting in May and heard of the challenges she encountered after being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) more than 15 years ago. A stay at Burrswood, a Christian hospital in Kent, transformed her health and life. From being bed-bound and in great pain, Hannah is now raising funds for Burrswood s work with CFS/ME patients; founding a charity to help them, and writing a book to inform others about the condition. It was very interesting and heart-warming to hear Hannah s story and of her renewed relationship with the Lord because of her experiences. Our first afternoon meeting on 21 May was attended by 20 who appreciated a beautifully illustrated and informative presentation by Brian Clews about our Garden Birds, beginning right at the start with the egg. At the beginning of June, Hugh Granger s intriguingly entitled talk I m not really old - it s those tablets turned out to be a stand-up session of funny stories and jokes, and we enjoyed an evening of laughter - one of the best medicines. Dorney Court Kitchen Garden Centre proved to be the perfect venue for afternoon tea on 18 June. The sun shone; the birds sang; the plants and flowers were a delight and the refreshments delicious. So, 13 of us had a very relaxing time chatting, as well as being pleasantly challenged by a couple of light-hearted quizzes, courtesy of Peter. (continued on next page) 16 5
Now for the advertisement, and please note the change in start times: 02 July for our Amble Ramble, leaving at 2.30pm from the National Trust car park in the High Street, Cookham 16 July 7.30pm Garden Party at Morag and Gordon s home, there will also be a Bring and Buy table If you need more information about either of these meetings please talk to one of the Friendship Group Team. Following a break in August and part of September, when we hope everyone will have an opportunity to enjoy a time of relaxation, our meetings commence again on: * 17 September 2.30pm when Bill Nightingale will be presenting The Cliff Richard Story We always have room for one more, so look forward to seeing you. Family News We are very sorry that there are a number of our friends who are unwell at the moment. Our love and prayers are with them all. : Irene : We wish everyone a happy summertime, whether it is spent away or at home. We hope that our young people in particular will be able to relax, now that all exams are nearly over for this year. Other Forthcoming Events Summer is upon us and in between organizing their annual holidays our various teams have been busy planning some interesting activities for us all to enjoy here are some of the things that we can look forward to in the coming months The Picnic! 13th July at Dinton Pastures (in case you missed it) A Sunday afternoon walk (date to be arranged) The Campbells At Home Garden Party 16th July Jazz Concert November 1st (more details later) A Quiz Night (date to be arranged) The Cliff Richard Story 17th September 2.30pm A Discussion session September 21st The Welcoming Church (Peter Hurter) (more details next magazine) 6 15
Larchfield Over the last few years you have probably heard me talk at Church meeting or read in the Enterprise about some of the work I am involved with up on the Larchfield estate. The Holiday Clubs and Larchfield Open Table (LOT) are just a small part of what the Larchfield Churches Team are involved with and I wanted to take the opportunity over the next couple of Enterprises to give you a taste of that work. Elizabeth Bryson from All Saints Church has been going into the care home for a while now and describes the work that she does there. Larchfield Care Home 'We offer the highest standard of care and access to a variety of services, activities and facilities designed to support people to increase independence and enrich their lives. Larchfield provides residential, nursing or dementia care for older people. We offer a high standard of individual care and support and provide modern nursing facilities in a homely and comfortable atmosphere.' You can go for a stroll Or build your own wigwam 14 All Saints Church has provided Services at Larchfield Care Home for many years. The Care Home Manager is so pleased that I go there twice a month to provide a Christian Service for the Residents with a Church background. We have our Service in a downstairs Quiet Room. They like to receive Communion and enjoy singing hymns. One of the Residents reads a Bible story for us. I then visit and pray with anyone who is too unwell to join us at the Service. (continued) 7
The Home contact me if one of the Christian Residents is dying, so that I can go to pray with them and arrange for a Priest to visit and give the last rites. It is wonderful to see these people who are suffering from dementia touched by the love and presence of Jesus through prayer and singing hymns with them. Alice Baptism What a joy it was to be a part of the baptism of little Samuel Body. The service was led by Rev d David Henry who was a little concerned as it had been a while since he had done an infant baptism (they tend to wriggle a bit you know) Pictures used with permission Sam s parents Julie and Chris brought him along with many friends and relatives swelling the numbers in church that morning to well over 80. He s bound to be a popular young man because. Wait for it! Everybody loves Sam Body sometime 8 13
Some of the sites to see at Dinton Pastures. Come along and enjoy a great picnic, sunshine and fellowship The diary for August is on page 17 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Poem of Love. The day my eyes opened I realized the sun shone everyday The beauty of the sunrise in the morning filled my heart with joy The magnificent sunset moments in the evening, lifted my spirit When I gave my heart to You, all things opened up for me That s the day I fell in love with You 12 9
Church Picnic Our Church Picnic will be held on Sunday 13th July from pm and will be at Dinton Pastures Winnersh, a map is included on the next page with directions from Maidenhead. There are three nature trail walks of varying lengths for the adventurous and not so able to enjoy. Parking costs 2.00 for up to 4 hours and entry to the park is free. You can enjoy feeding the many wild geese and ducks or just soak up the pleasant surroundings.
