Thomas Highland UMC JOB POSTING Director of Christian Education (15-20 hours per week) Responsibilities: To promote and encourage spiritual growth in the life of those in our church fellowship by Recruit and train Sunday School teachers and Small group leaders. Support existing small groups, Sunday school classes and Bible studies. Provide leadership training and encouragement to small group leaders. Coordinate Wednesday Night Options (Bible study and study/enrichment opportunities following Wednesday dinner). Initiate and organize an annual church-wide small group campaign/study. Promote and support the emergence of new small group opportunities. Assist with promotional campaigns for special sermon series/projects. Coordinate and execute yearly Serve Campaign. Coordinate and manage operations of Sunday morning Welcome Center and Highland Perk Coffee Fellowship. Begin to explore ways in which we might engage more, in this area of Christian Education, with those beyond our walls. Establish an Education Committee with whom to work and gather ideas and for support and implementation of various CE programming or training (as well as seek to, in creative ways, enlarge the scope of Christian Education at the church) Prepare, further develop and work within an annual CE budget. Work closely with pastors and Children s Director. Programing would support Wesleyan theology and the United Methodist Church. Office hours: to be determined; hours per week Attend Staff meetings each Tuesday at 9:00am Attend and offer a report at the bi-monthly Administrative Council meeting. Education: A bachelor s degree with a major or emphasis on Christian Education, Leadership, or Christian Formation and/or Church experience. 5 COVINGTON DISTRICT ANNUAL UMW MEETING Washington United Methodist Church 1917 US 68, Washington, KY (606) Saturday, September 26, 2015 Registration & Continental Breakfast 9 9:30 Theme: Civil Rights & Immigration This meeting will be the last meeting of the Covington District which will include singing, communion, awards, Woman of the Year, blessing of baby blankets/quilts and so much more. Please encourage all of your members to attend. A catered lunch will be served after the meeting for $8.50. Please send 1 check from each unit for all lunch reservations. No lunches will be added to the list without the money. The cut-off date for lunch reservation(s) is September 19. We will have child care for elementary age children. 6 Embracing Diversity cont. Whether you yearn to reach out to your local community or desire for your multicultural multi- class ministry to grow deeper and wider, this experience is for you! The UM Church for All People (C4AP) began as an attempt to provide a worship space for the customers at the original Free Store. What developed was a vibrant faith community of people from diverse social, economic, and racial backgrounds. During its 13 years, C4AP s ministries have grown and leaders have emerged from across this entire spectrum. This conference is experiential. Participants will join members of the community in worship, dialog, shared learning and fun. Immersion experiences include Sunday morning worship; an evening celebration that showcases a variety of community music ministries, meals and fellowship; and focused conversations. Quadrennial Boundaries Training All clergy persons are expected to attend a Boundaries Training each quadrennium. In order to accomplish this, training will be offered 3 times a year throughout the quadrennium. This allows for the event to be offered in each district over the course of the quadrennium. The training will be offered in every district at some point during the quadrennium. Two of the trainings will be held during the week and one will be held on Saturday in order to accommodate varying schedules. The cost of the event will include lunch and your quadrennial background check. Registration starts at 8:30am and the training goes from 9:00am - 4:00pm. This is the last year of the quadrennium. 7 We are excited about what God has in store for us for the coming academic year. We have a great student leadership team with a desire to reach out to new students. Our portable espresso ministry has been a great way to connect to incoming freshmen as they come on campus to register. We're launching a monthly Sunday evening worship service called the 507 to reach Greek life students, which is lead in part by Greeks seeking to reach their peers for Christ. We also look forward to a canoe trip and a joint fall retreat with our other Kentucky Methodist campus ministries. If you know of a student who will begin at NKU in August or is currently attending, here is how you can help in ministry. Take that students out for lunch or coffee and simply be interested in them! Ask them about their life, and listen. A great book to help guide you in how you too can be a Christian influence on 20-somethings is Worlds Apart by Chuck Bomar. Of course, if the student is interested in campus ministry then please connect them with us! Do first ask them permission to pass on their contact information. We give God thanks for the generosity of this district in bridging the financial gap in the face of budget cuts. God has been better to us than we could have imagined! We are of course always looking for new partners in ministry, whether that's individuals, classes, small groups, or churches, who have a heart to reach college students and want to support us financially. 8 Brunch with Beverly Lewis Come join the fun and fellowship as Beverly Lewis shares her faith and stories of the Plain life. Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is the New York Times bestselling author of more than ninety books. Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide. A keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage has inspired Beverly to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with The Shunning, which has sold more than one million copies and is an Original Hallmark Channel movie. In 2007, The Brethren was honored with a Christy Award. Beverly has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC. She lives with her husband, David, in Colorado. Seats are limited so make sure to get your reservations in early to secure a spot at this exciting event. 9 Erlanger United Methodist Men Annual Steak Night Saturday, September 19, 2015 From 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. At the Erlanger United Methodist Church 31 Commonwealth Erlanger, KY $10.00 for an 8 oz. 10 The Erlanger United Methodist Church enjoyed a day at Lincoln Woods Park. We had special music by the Vintage People, and Virginia Smith, a special message from Rev. Shepherd, and a wonderful lunch with special cupcakes to celebrate birthdays. Fun was had by all. 10

11 Ghassan Thomas was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. He established an underground church in Baghdad during the reign of Saddam Hussein and reached an average attendance of almost 1,400 people. The headlines have revealed that Christians have been heavily persecuted in that area and Syria. Islamic terrorists have tried to silence Ghassan by means of assassination. Ghassan and his entire family have received death threats. Terrorists have tried to kidnap and kill his oldest son. He is considered an enemy of Islam. After fleeing for his life, he established Bible Study groups in refugee camps in Turkey and is training others to do this ministry presently. You are invited to come and hear first-hand account of the persecution of Christians in Iraq and Syria and how God is using this man to proclaim the love of Jesus Christ in one of the most dangerous places on earth. 12 From Rev. Tommy Purvis (Hickory Grove UMC): I worked primarily as a chaplain visiting with vendors, employees, and people on the street assisting with problems, providing words of encouragement, running errands, sharing the gospel, and praying with them. They numbered in the hundreds. I also assisted with the evangelistic effort under the tent as both a chaplain and story teller, where we were doing a bike giveaway--a 2015 Harley Davidson Road King. After listening to our three-minute story, the bikers were eligible to enter the drawing. We shared our life before Jesus Christ, how we met Jesus Christ as Savior, and how our life changed as a result of knowing Him as personal Savior and Lord. In eight days we shared our stories with 6,195 people. As a result, 607 people prayed to receive Jesus Christ as Savior. They will now be connected with churches in their home areas so that they may be discipled. Dakota Baptists spearheaded the project and were joined by volunteers across the nation from various denominations and Christian biker groups. This was the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Black Hills Motorcycle Rally, which provided an enormous crowd of prospects for the gospel. Rev. 13 A group of my biker friends came to Hickory Grove for my Sturgis send off Sunday--joining us for a friends day and praying for the mission. Standing in front of the evangelistic tent. I worshipped with Sturgis United Methodist Church and pastor Jenene Earle, an Asbury graduate. During the rally their church provides senior citizen services, which are canceled due to the logistical problems of the rally. They also reach out to the women in crisis center which helps women who are often abandoned during the rally and are stranded. 13
