(St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, 1876) Dear Parents and Community Members, I wanted to let you know that recently Mr Gerald Reith s wife Vanessa was once again diagnosed with ovarian cancer and subsequently Mr Reith has been away to support his wife. Vanessa will soon commence six months of chemotherapy treatment. Please keep Vanessa, Gerald and their family in your prayers as we all ask for them to find strength and courage as they go through another health battle. Mr Reith returned to work this week and the many cards from the students in 4/5RB has been very heart-warming and we thank the children for their empathy and prayers. As you are aware, this week we were able to announce that Ms Susan Hennessy was appointed as the substantive Deputy Principal starting from the beginning of I take this opportunity to congratulate Ms Hennessy on her appointment and look forward to continue working with her as part of the Whitefriars Leadership Team. Father s Day Breakfast One of my highlights of the school year so far was the Father s Day Breakfast. Although the weather was a little cold, a total of around 180 people (dads and children) were able to join us. A sincere thank you Delia Hutchinson and Amanda Fletcher who helped to coordinate a number of parents to support this event. Thank you also to Sonya Stanef, Jo Crammond and Samara Bell for cooking and serving the breakfast. Special thanks to Edvina Karabegovic for arranging with her employer to supply all the food at cost price and to a number of our staff who also helped out. It was a lovely opportunity for many dads to spend time at Whitefriars with their children. I hope all of our dads celebrated a lovely Father s Day on Sunday and I thank all the dads for what they do for their children and families. The role of being a dad or a mum is not only the most important job parents will ever have, but also the one that brings everlasting and a legacy they leave behind.

2 Religious Dimension Hats As we begin Spring, we ask all children to wear hats to protect them from the rays of the sun during all outdoor time. Please label your children s hats as they are often misplaced. Having a name on them helps everyone. Working Bee Saturday 15th of September Thank you to the parents who have indicated that they will be able to join us Saturday the 15th of September. The Working Bee will be from 8am to 12pm followed by a sausage sizzle at 12:00. The main job we are hoping to achieve is to remove and dispose of a number of old cupboards. If we are fortunate to have enough helpers we may also have time to do some painting. Thank you in anticipation. Helping our Farmers One of our students, Charlie Loveridge in 2/3TR, recently spoke to Ms Hennessy and I about the importance of supporting our farmers experiencing drought. It was lovely to hear Charlie s compassion for the farmers and his desire for us to show our support. We will be having a Casual Day on the last day of this term to raise money for our farmers (gold coin donation required to participate). In the meantime, we have donated $300 on behalf of the Whitefriars community to this cause and continue to offer our prayers for our farmers and their families to remain strong and resilient during this difficult time. Kind Regards Frank Congedi Prayer Catholic Schools are places of welcome, where Christ is at the centre of all. Whitefriars is a community rich in diversity, both in culture and religion. By coming together regularly to pray, the Catholic Identity of our school is strengthened and it also deepens respect for the faiths and backgrounds of all. Prayer sits at the heart of Catholic Schools as it allows dialogue between God and self, it provides an opportunity for us to connect on a deeper level with each other and reflect on our ministry and it allows us to make a connection between self and the world. Prayer deepens our relationship with God and brings us closer to Him. He created us with a need for connection, and prayer is connection. Praying is talking to the Lord, just like friends talk to each other and are brought closer together through their sharing. When we pray, we share our innermost being with Him. Through prayer, we are transformed and renewed. 1 John 5:14-15 says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him." Mother Teresa of Calcutta-5th September Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in Summing up her life Mother Teresa said, "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus." Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, you allowed the thirsting love of Jesus on the Cross to become a living flame within you, and so became the light of His love to all. Teach me to allow Jesus to penetrate and possess my whole being so completely that my life, too, may radiate His light and love to others. Amen. Immaculate Heart of Mary, Cause of Our Joy, pray for us. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us. Sacramental Programme Enrolment forms for the next programme for First Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Holy Communion have been distributed to all Catholic students in Years 3-7 (copies are also available in the front office). Closing date for applications is Sunday, 16th September. This is a Family Based programme which includes the active involvement of parents and families. 3 Make - A Book Awards Last Friday four of our extremely talented students Hanh Ly 4/5C, Jackson Macdonald 6/7CR, Daniel Osorio Dos Santos 1NR and Ariana Quirk 4/5C attended an awards ceremony at the Woodville Town Hall and Civic Library because they won a prize at the Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge. Congratulations to Hanh Ly, as her entry has been converted to an e-book and uploaded to the City of Charles Sturt website. The following is the link to the Charles Sturt website: to read her book. Congratulations also to the following students, whose work is on display in the Civic Library because their Mayoral Make-A-Book entry was a shortlisted book - Vivienne Bui 6/7L, Mehansa Fernando 6/7L, Kush Gupta 6/7CR, Izabela Lulaj 6/7CR, Amelia Scodella 4/5C and Guunvy Singh 4/5R. Well done and congratulations to all our students who entered this competition. It is a great experience for students to write and publish their own work and to share their amazing writing talents with others. We have some great writers at Whitefriars! All entries will be on display in our school Library from next week, so please come past and have a read Premier s Reading Challenge A child's reading skills are important to their success in school as they will allow them to access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition, reading can be a fun and imaginative time for children, which opens doors to all kinds of new worlds for them. This year Whitefriars is once again taking part in the Premier s Reading Challenge; a challenge that motivates and encourages a love of reading and one in which we have achieved a lot of success in the past. This challenge is compulsory for ALL students, so please continue to encourage your child/children to read every night. This challenge finishes on 7th September, Angela Scodella, Literacy Coordinator Social Media Check regularly that your Facebook and other social media accounts are set to private. Facebook has different groups of default security settings for account holders years of age which are stricter than settings applied to adult accounts. Help your teen to protect their reputation on Facebook by following these steps: Make the profile and cover pictures sensible Check your child s friends Hide your child s friends from public view Protect the photos Know how tagging works Check your child s likes. If your child has 500 friends on Facebook (average for most teens) and they each have 500 friends, 250,000 people can contact your child. If you find something you don t like, report it to legitimate sites. These sites will respond promptly and remove the content when requested. If the content is not removed you can now lodge a second complaint via the portal on the esafety Commissioner s website. The sooner you report a problem the better the outcome. 4 Last Tuesday 28 th of August the Reception children were blessed with beautiful weather and walked to the Ukrainian Church. Mrs Scodella, Jenny from the Parish and Fr. Zanon welcomed us into their church and shared their knowledge. The children were excited to see a different kind of church and were amazed by the special gates, the red candle, the Gospel Book and the Priests special clothes. The following students celebrate their birthdays from the 5th September to the 11th September: Billy Bishop, Nicholas Cuzzocrea, Alex Economou, Chloe Farmer, Sienna Lillywhite, Preston Linke, Amelia Marafioti, Lily Nagy, Jayden Pham, Gabrielle Quirk and Tomas Wheatman. Congratulations to the Attar family, Biong (Rec RK), Adhar (2/3P), Ajiing (4/5R) and Nyanbol (6/7CR) on the birth of their new baby sister, Adau, who was born on the 1st September. We wish the Attar family God s blessings on their new arrival. There will be a Pupil Free Day on Monday, 15th October. First day of Term 4 for students is Tuesday, 16th October. The Staff will be involved in professional development day. The YMCA OSHC service will be available on this day. If you require the use of this service on the Pupil Free Day, please phone to book.

5 Lacrosse Last week the Year 6 students went to the lacrosse carnival. We were able to compete against other schools like St Joseph s Hindmarsh, St Margaret Mary s and Dominican Semaphore. Lacrosse is a new sport for all of use. We were nervous about it but we were also excited. The umpires gave us tips on how to play and helped us to have lots of fun. The folk song section was won by Bahar Ambrogi 4/5RB, with William Knowles 6/7L claiming second. Bahar also received an Honourable Mention in the Own Choice section. Well done to all! If you have a current Catholic police check and a few hours that you can spare either once per week, fortnight or term, your help would be very much appreciated by the children. If you would like to know more, please see Erica or Iris in the Canteen.
