1 Rev. Wheeler Stone, PhD Interim Minister cell Schoharie United Presbyterian Church newsletter July 2013 During July & August the church office hours will be 9:00 AM thru 1:00 PM Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. The National Alliance of Mental Health (NAMI ) will be meeting as a support group in the library twice monthly at 7:15pm - 8:30pm. Darlene Rinaldo will be our facilitator all those looking for a supportive and informative place are invited to come. NAMI is dedicated to building better lives for people and their families affected by Mental Illness. NAMI advocates for services, treatment, supports research, and is steadfast in it s commitment to raise awareness and build a community of hope for all those in need. Next meeting is July 17,2013 at 7:15pm Questions can be given to Launa Garrett or Alice Sutch August dates 7th and 21st September 4th and 18th October 2nd and 16th November 6th and 20th December 4th and 18th The Session has authorized the celebration of the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper on Sunday, June 30th at the request of Rev. Stone, as it is her last Sunday to serve as Interim Minister with SUPC. With Session approval, the following two plans come from Wiawaka: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU We all enjoy celebrating the birthdays and anniversaries of our congregation members and friends. Traditionally we have made time prior to our worship service for this purpose. The celebration is officially moving to the fellowship time following the service. We will sing and celebrate during this time. Wieawaka has celebrated these occasions with a remembrance to the Birthday Offering, the women of Wieawaka would like to extend an invitation to everyone to join us in this tradition of giving a penny (or so) for each year you are celebrating, these monies are collected in a special container ( which will now be located at the fellowship time) to be donated to special mission projects what follows is the history of this special fund. Happy Day to All In 1922, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Woman s Auxiliary (PCUS), it was decided that an offering should be made for a definite cause. That same year, Hallie Paxson Winsborough, superintendent of women s work, visited Miss Dowd s School for Girls in Kochi, Japan. Realizing the school s needs, she challenged members of the Women s Auxiliary (Wieawaka) to give one penny for each year of their life as a birthday gift

2 Page 2 to the school. Over the years, that tradition has become known as the Birthday Offering. Presbyterian Women have given more than $29 million in support of mission projects throughout the world. Birthday Offering grants range from $200,000 to $750,000. Grant requests come from a variety Dear Stone, of sources including PC (USA) governing bodies, health agencies, overseas churches, ecumenical It has been delightful to work with you and share in your councils, community groups, educational institutions and church related groups recipient is Westminster Neighborhood Ministries in Indianapolis, Indiana to continue programing for children, youth and adults, 34% of all people in that community live below the federal poverty level. Small pennies taken from our change from around the Presbyterian Church can add up to change lives in a big way. Summer is here Parents and Children are ready to enjoy the summer holiday away from books, pencils and study. Many children around the USA and globe have difficulty obtain school supplies when the time comes due to poverty, disaster, war and being displaced from their homes. This summer when you see school supplies on sale or are purchasing supplies for your families, Wieawaka asks if you would participate in our school mission program by purchasing and bringing some items to fill school kits again this year. Thank you! I wish I could attend the going away party for. I really enjoyed her service to our Church and community. Best of good wishes in her new appointment. Gene Dietz ministry. Your leadership turned a disaster into a success. Congratulations and blessings be upon you as you take a new call. - Bob Smith Thank you for your excellent leadership, constant guidance, and all your support. - The Session To assemble a School Kit you will need: One pair of blunt metal scissors (rounded tip) Three 70-count spiral notebooks or notebooks totaling pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper) One 30-centimeter ruler (12 ) One hand-held pencil sharpener One large eraser Six new pencils with erasers One box of 24 crayons (only 24) One 12 x 14 to 14 x 17 finished size cotton or lightweight canvas bag with cloth handles. (Please, no reusable shopping bags or backpacks.) As you leave our church to go to your next calling, it is with a great deal of joy and sadness for me. I have learned so much from you and you have made me stop and think on so many things. I am truly blessed to have had you part of my life. Thank you, seems so inadequet, but it is meant with the most sincerity, for leading me to the next step in my faith journey. I will never forget you and all you have done for me and for our church. God bless you where ever your faith journey leads you. Thank you!! Jean Sparks PS I will never use or throw out another plastic bag ever!!!

4 Page 4 Report from the June Session meeting Summer worship time will remain at 10:30 a.m. The slate roof is going to require repair as soon as an appropriate contractor can be identified. The Session voted to have Tom Putnam become the investment advisor/manager for the Designated Funds of SUPC. The Mission and Ministry Fund Bylaws were approved by the Session as amended, to go back to the Mission Fund Board of Directors and on to the congregation for a vote on Sunday, June 23d at a called congregational meeting. (The revised Bylaws were approved at that meeting.) Barb Monsees will begin summer hours in July. She will not be in the office Monday or Friday, but rather be available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The Doing Well Center will be offering the second program on Domestic Violence in September, with Rev. Bonnie Orth. Rev. Stone gave a sneak preview to the Session of the photo album she made that covers the time she has been with SUPC. The album was presented to the congregation at the June 23d meeting in thanks for the faith journey we have shared these 2 years and 8 months. The album is to remain in the library for all to peruse at leisure. Rev. Stone passed out forms to the Session so that they might do exit interview surveys for both the interim process as well as the pastor. The Lutheran Cemetery Association Board of Directors (by Bylaw, the Session serves in this capacity) has approved amended Bylaws and elected new officers: Linda Mencucci, Chairman, Alice Sutch, Vice Chairman, Marguerite Stanley, Secretary, and Todd Cipperly, Treasurer. Donn Stanley is the Superintendent of the Cemetery. At the Wiawaka dinner meeting June 18th greenware ceramic bowls were hand painted, to be fired by a shop in Cobleskill. The bowls will then be made available for an Empty Bowls dinner at SUNY/Cobleskill next fall, a fundraiser for the food pantries in our area. Tickets to the event will be available later. The church website has a new feature: a way to make a contribution to the church online: NEW TAB ON WEBSITE! There s a new tab on the church s website at: schoharieupc.steepleconnect.org Besides all of the other great tabs that inform you of all of the ministries of the church, there is now a Donate tab. There are three options: 1. Make a one-time donation (this option does NOT require you to have a PayPal account) 2. Schedule 12 monthly donations (this option DOES require a PayPal account) 3. Schedule 52 weekly donations (this option also requires a PayPal account). So for those of you that would rather not have to make out a weekly/monthly check for your pledges, this would be the way to go! And for visitors to the web-site, or for one-time donations, this tab would be perfect! If you have any difficulty with this tab, please contact either Susan Bramer (rbramer@nycap.rr.com) or the Church office (supc09@yahoo.com). Parish Nurses~ Lyme Disease - What is it? Lyme disease was identified in Lyme, CT in First diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, and eventually led researchers to the bacterial cause. Early symptoms and signs include expanding reddish rash and flu-like symptoms. The rash is caused as the bacteria spread in the skin away from the initial tick bite. The characteristic rash looks like a bull s eye within days to weeks of the tick bite. Early symptoms and signs: Reddish rash & flu-like symptoms Late Stage Lyme Disease: Abnormal heart rhythms, bells palsy, and arthritis. Early stage treatment includes: Doxycyline, Amoxicillin and Ceftin. Needless to say, the earlier you are treated, the better, and early treatment is often successful. Unfortunately, more than half of the patients treated with antibiotics continue to have significant symptoms. So, don t let the bugs bite! If you have questions talk to your Parish Nurses
