2 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES June 17, 2018 (Mk 4:26-34) Vinal Van Benthem ofs Sr. Sophie had been Claire s high school literature teacher so it was only logical that she would be one of the first people Claire would call to share the good news when her publisher offered her a book contract. A Shakespeare scholar and poet, the nun had worked tirelessly to instill in her students a love for language; and her yearly Christmas poem had been the inspiration for much of Claire s poetry as well as the tradition of a yearly Christmas poem of her own. Claire realized how difficult it must have been for Sr. Sophie to stand before students who were often there only because taking English Literature was mandatory, trying to help them to understand and appreciate the gift of literature even as she saw their eyes glazing over. Claire wanted her to know that the seed she had scattered had indeed taken root and yielded fruit and to share with her that she would probably never have aspired to be a writer if it had not been for her teacher s encouragement. Jeanette was also a teacher, but her students were much younger. Jeanette taught first grade and her students were like a bunch of little sponges, listening attentively to everything that their teacher said. And because she knew the importance of first teachers, Jeanette worked tirelessly, not only with the children, but also with their parents. Not depending solely on the occasional teacher s conference, Jeanette made it a practice, as much as possible, to keep the lines of communication open with comments on the children s papers, notes in their backpacks, and even the occasional phone call if something special needed to be discussed. Jeanette believed in scattering seed beyond the classroom, even though she knew that she might never herself see the results of her efforts as the tiny plants grew to maturity. In Mark s Gospel we hear Jesus tell the story of a man who scattered seed, even though he had no way of knowing how it would sprout and grow. Come to think of it, he might just as easily have been talking about a teacher In Search of Young Adults! SPIRITUS is seeking Catholic men, years of age, to join the SPIRITUS missionary team this August. SPIRITUS ignites the faith in thousands of young Catholics through retreats and parish youth ministry each year! Missionaries live in community and travel to parishes and schools throughout Wisconsin; they receive training, formation, spiritual direction, lodging, food, a monthly allowance, health insurance and a $2,000 stipend upon completion of the 9-month program. 3 Ministry of the Sick. Times of illness are stressful. We wish to visit with you at your home or in the hospital. Please notify us at the parish office of your desire for prayers, visits, Holy Communion, anointing of the sick and other needs. Because of federal privacy laws, notification must come from you or a family member. Prayer Shawls If you have a family member who is homebound and would like a visit from Fr. Amal or from Lauri, our Pastoral Minister, please contact the parish office, and we will arrange a convenient time to visit. Through the Prayer Shawl Ministry, we are able to give the sick a beautiful prayer shawl made by one of our parish volunteers. If you know of someone who is sick and might enjoy a prayer shawl, please contact Lauri at the office number ( ) or at lauri@smm-waupaca.org. Parents planning for the Sacrament of Baptism, please call the parish office at Lauri, the pastoral minister, will prepare parents for the Baptism of their child. Baptism preparation is scheduled on Wednesdays between 6-8 pm. Meetings last about an hour. Baptisms are normally scheduled on Saturday at the 4:30 pm Mass or Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm. Please call Lauri, Pastoral Minister, at , upon the birth of your child so Elizabeth Ministry can welcome your new baby into our parish family. Fair Trade and Food Pantry Collection Next weekend, June 16 & 17, is the Fourth Sunday Food Pantry Collection and Fair Trade Sale. Our Social Justice Committee will have various Fair Trade Items available for purchase. You may also bring in your nonperishable food items and place them in the wooden box in the Narthex. Someone from the committee will distribute the items to area Food Pantries. Kate Laatsch & Chad Steger who are getting married on June 30, 2018 From the Gardening Angels WOW! The landscaping for the new Social Wing is complete. Doesn t it look great? We want to thank all the volunteers, especially Jim O Brien, who was the project manager and Shelly Christie, from Graziano Gardens, for her expertise and generosity. A job well done to all! Chemo Angels Summer is here! Chemo Angels is looking for anything having to do with Summer, plants, wind chimes, garden art, etc. Please, no food or drink items. Place your items in the tote by the parish office marked Chemo Angels, and we will distribute them to the patients. Calling all Angels! Chemo Angels is looking for your help. This year we are giving patients gift cards for their birthdays. They can be from anywhere you like and for any amount you want to give. If you like, you can even give a Scrip Card!! 5 The Festival Silent Auction Needs You! The Silent Auction Committee is requesting your help! We need items, large or small, that can be used in the Silent Auction. Some examples are: hand-crafted items, any NEW items, crafts, theme baskets or donations of unique dining experiences, entertainment, or recreational outings. You could also auction off your Time or Talent - bake cookies once a month for a year, rake leaves in the fall, weed a garden this summer, wash someone s windows, wash a car, babysit, etc. The ideas are endless! No item is too small! Corrine and Jo will create something wonderful with your items. The Festival will be on Sunday, August 12. Pilgrimage to the Basilica at Holy Hill The K of C Councils of Assembly 1862 are sponsoring a pilgrimage to Holy Hill. This is open to all interested Catholics. The trip will take place on Tuesday, September 18 and the cost is $35 per person. The price includes bus transportation and lunch. The bus will leave from St. Mary Magdalene parking lot at 7:00 am and return at 5:00 pm. Make checks payable to KC Council 6228 and payment is due on August 23. Bishop's Appeal Update As of June 5, 2018 Goal $55, SMM Members have given $48,189 CATHOLIC CHARITIES Did you know that Catholic Charities has a licensed counselor who comes to our parish every Tuesday? Her name is Melanie Creger MA, LPC, CSAC. She is a Mental Health Counselor and Substance Abuse Counselor and can see clients at St. Mary Magdalene Church on Tuesdays and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wautoma on Thursdays. She provides counseling for the following needs: depression, anxiety, grief and loss, marital and family issues, relationship issues, trauma, anger management, caregiver support, and substance abuse. Catholic Charities serves individuals of all faiths and heritages, regardless of race, gender, national origin, age, disability or economic status. No one is turned away due to financial issues. Services are covered by health insurance and Medical Assistance. For those without coverage, a sliding fee scale is used to determine cost of care.
