2 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES April 8, 2018 (Acts 4:32-35; Jn. 20:19-31) Vinal Van Benthem ofs How are we to live as Christians in a post-easter world? One possible answer can be found in the Book of Acts where we read that [T]he community of believers was of one heart and mind they had everything in common. And a line or two later, [T]here was no needy person among them. Newsmagazines and politicians regularly remind us that the United States was founded on Christian principles. Why, then, are so many in our country needy? Another possibility in John s Gospel Jesus greets his followers with a blessing, Peace be with you, a reminder that He has been sent by the Father to be God s peace in the world. Then He tells His followers that as the Father has sent Him, now He s sending them. If we call ourselves followers of Jesus Christ doesn t that mean that He also sends us to bring peace to an anxious world? Why, then, are so many in our world afraid? Perhaps the answer to all these questions comes later in John s Gospel when we meet Thomas. Thomas was not with the others the first time Jesus appeared, so He had not been given the same assurances they had received during that earlier visit. Maybe that s why he came to this gathering filled with doubt, rather than peace Maybe that s why Jesus made it a point to extend His blessing of peace yet again before inviting Thomas to test His wounds because He knew that the community could not be.of one heart and mind as long as Thomas heart was not at peace. Maybe that s why, after Jesus greeting, Thomas no longer felt the need to test Him. Our world is filled with doubting Thomases frightened, needy people. As the Father has sent me so I send you. Do we believe that as Christians in a post-easter world we, now, are sent to bring peace to people locked in fear? Do we live the blessing? In the marketplace? In the polling place? Do we really live as Christians? Or do we settle for simply being citizens of a country founded on Christian principles? Divine Mercy Sunday Who is St. Faustina? On February 22, 1931, a young Polish nun, Sr. Faustina Kowalska, saw a vision of Jesus with rays of mercy streaming from the area of His Heart. He told her to have an image painted to represent this vision and to sign it Jesus, I trust in You! In a series of revelations, He taught her that His mercy is unlimited and available even to the greatest sinners, and He revealed special ways for people to respond to His mercy. Sister Faustina had only three years basic education. From the tender age of seven she had a deep yearning for a religious vocation. Her entry into the convent occurred in July Jesus appeared many times and during the last four years of Her life, instructed her to write a diary, now known as The Diary of St. Faustina. She became the Apostle of Divine Mercy to the world. The Church recognizes St. Faustina not only as a saint, but one of the Catholic Church s most outstanding mystics. Be sure to take advantage of Divine Mercy Sunday (the Sunday after Easter) by gaining a plenary indulgence (a plenary indulgence attains complete purification of the sinner eliminating all temporal punishment due to their sins), by going to confession (20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday) and receiving the Eucharist on Divine Mercy Sunday. 2 April 8, 2018

3 Ministry of the Sick. Times of illness are stressful. We wish to visit with you at your home or in the hospital. Please notify us at the parish office of your desire for prayers, visits, Holy Communion, anointing of the sick and other needs. Because of federal privacy laws, notification must come from you or a family member. Prayer Shawls If you have a family member who is homebound and would like a visit from Fr. Amal or from Lauri, our Pastoral Minister, please contact the parish office, and we will arrange a convenient time to visit. Through the Prayer Shawl Ministry, we are able to give the sick a beautiful prayer shawl made by one of our parish volunteers. If you know of someone who is sick and might enjoy a prayer shawl, please contact Lauri at the office number ( ) or at lauri@smm-waupaca.org. Parents planning for the Sacrament of Baptism, please call the parish office at Lauri, the pastoral minister, will prepare parents for the Baptism of their child. Baptism preparation is scheduled on Wednesdays between 6-8 pm. Meetings last about an hour. Baptisms are normally scheduled on Saturday at the 4:30 pm Mass or Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm. Calling all Angels! Chemo Angels is looking for your help. This year we are giving patients gift cards for their birthdays. They can be from anywhere you like and for any amount you want to give. If you like, you can even give a Scrip Card!! Spring is here! Chemo Angels is looking for anything having to do with Spring - wind chimes, garden art, etc. and gas gift cards for the patients who need to travel for treatment. Please place your items in the plastic tote by the Office, and they will be collected and given out to the patients. PRAYERFUL SISTERS Keep praying and sending your cards! SCRIP Use SCRIP cards for your 1st Communion and Confirmation party supplies. SCRIP gas cards make great gifts for those Confirmation students We are selling SCRIP on the weekend of April 21& 22. This is a wonderful Charity event to help people in our community who have intellectual disabilities. The SMM Knights of Columbus, Council 3432, are asking for volunteers interested in helping with the Tootsie Roll Drive, scheduled for Friday April 27, Saturday April 28 and before and after the Masses on Saturday (28) and Sunday (29). The Knights will have a sign up table, with locations and shift schedules, in the Narthex on Saturday and Sunday April 7 & 8 and on Saturday and Sunday April 14 & 15. Most shifts are 2 hours long. Over this last week, we were reminded about how Jesus calls us all to be His disciples. Through the good works of the Bishop s Appeal, we are able to follow Jesus by sharing our faith. St. Mary Magdalene is looking for volunteers to assist in the jail ministry. We lead a spiritual study for inmates that lasts approximately one hour each Monday evening (6:30-7:30 p.m.). We usually read a chapter out of the faith-based Purpose- Driven Life book (by Rick Warren), often with engaging discussion from the inmates who volunteer to attend each week. Since members of the ministry take turns leading the study, it is not a big time commitment (about an hour each month); but members of our ministry find it very rewarding in helping inmates get their lives back on track after incarceration. 5 WE NEED YOU TO HELP EVANGELIZE! PRESENTING THE SMM YOUTH YOUNG NEIGHBORS IN ACTION STOCK SALE Did you know that for twenty-four years, SMM high schoolers have been serving others through Young Neighbors In Action? That means that approximately 500 of our young people have gone out to serve others in numerous locations in cities, rural areas, and Native American reservations. This summer, our group will volunteer in Tucson, AZ. We are excited as this is a new site for SMM! As seniors, our students are required to write the Bishop a letter requesting the sacrament of Confirmation. About 99% of those letters state that, I found Jesus and my faith through helping others. Not only is a service trip a feel good thing ~~ it leads our children to faith and shows hem that we are called to help EVERYONE! Young Neighbors has succeeded only because of YOU and your generosity!! Your stock purchase helps offset the trip for students who cannot afford the entire cost. It also covers the cost of van rentals, gas and chaperones. More importantly, YOU become a missionary.you share what you have with others, so that they can have HOPE. You not only give someone a handout, but more importantly a hand up! And most of all, you let our young people know that SMM supports them on their faith journey. Thank you for your help! Detach here St. Maximilian Kolbe and St Peregrine Shrine Trip May 4th & 5th It s time to think Spring and join us on our next pilgrimage. We will start at St. Maximilian Kolbe Shrine in Marytown located in Libertyville, Illinois. We will be staying overnight at the retreat house on site. Our second day will take us to Chicago where we will visit the National Shrine of St. Peregrine (On his feast day!), the Patron Saint of Cancer Patients. Please mark your calendars for these dates and plan to join us. The cost is $175 per adult. The student rate is $88.
