2 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES October 7, 2018 (Mark 10:2-16) Vinal Van Benthem ofs There s been a great deal of conversation in the news lately about marriage. Christians believe that marriage is sacred but movie magazines call it old fashioned and popular TV reality shows feature bachelors and bachelorettes in their quest for improved ratings. Meanwhile politicians point to marriage as a kind of litmus test of political correctness, insisting that marriage should be protected at all costs. But sometimes it s not Ellen was a lawyer and a wife and a mother. Her husband was a doctor. They both worked long hours but they were firm in their commitment to one another and to their marriage. The managing partner of Ellen s firm believed in marriage, too. In fact, as a candidate for public office he was often photographed with his wife. He supported marriage as long as it didn t interfere with business. When Ellen asked for time off because she was expecting a second baby her boss became angry. This was a law office, not a nursery, and he had no intention of running it any other way. Ellen was just going to have to decide where her priorities lay. Our readings this Sunday talk about marriage. They remind me of a couple I saw one July day in downtown Chicago curiously removed from the commuters around them but present to one another in the comfortable way of those long married HOT RAIN Hot rain early in the morning. They walk her dress, a farmer s garden of dooryard flowers. He s tall, outdoor lines trace life across his face. Each shelter for the other. No need to speak. Long years of words let silence be enough. His heavy feet find dry place on the earth. She walks behind, content to take the path he claims for both. Are their words supported by actions? Public Square Fatima Rosary Crusade In The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering. 3 Ministry of the Sick. Times of illness are stressful. We wish to visit with you at your home or in the hospital. Please notify us at the parish office of your desire for prayers, visits, Holy Communion, anointing of the sick and other needs. Because of federal privacy laws, notification must come from you or a family member. Prayer Shawls If you have a family member who is homebound and would like a visit from Fr. Xavier or from Lauri, our Pastoral Minister, please contact the parish office, and we will arrange a convenient time to visit. Through the Prayer Shawl Ministry, we are able to give the sick a beautiful prayer shawl made by one of our parish volunteers. If you know of someone who is sick and might enjoy a prayer shawl, please contact Lauri at the office number ( ) or at lauri@smm-waupaca.org. Parents planning for the Sacrament of Baptism, please call the parish office at Lauri, the pastoral minister, will prepare parents for the Baptism of their child. Baptism preparation is scheduled on Wednesdays between 6-8 pm. Meetings last about an hour. Baptisms may be scheduled during or after the Saturday 4:30 pm Mass, during or after the Sunday 10:00 am Mass or by appointment.. Can You Help? Did you know that every Sunday a volunteer communion minister from St. Mary Magdalene goes to an area nursing home to distribute communion to our Catholic residents? Bethany Home is seeking volunteers to assist with this Catholic Communion Service. They are looking for volunteers to help get the residents from their rooms to their chapel on Sunday mornings. Your time commitment would be approximately one hour, from 9:15 am to 10:15 am. 4 Scott & Kimberly Hahn are Coming to Oshkosh! National speakers and prolific authors, Scott and Kimberly Hahn will speak on Understanding and Defending your Faith at St. Raphael the Archangel in Oshkosh on Saturday, October 20. Because so many people do not understand, or misunderstand the Catholic faith, the Hahns will explain the truth behind what the Catholic Church teaches and why. People who may not understand the teachings of the Catholic Church will especially find the presentations engaging. This is a great opportunity to bring someone who has not committed him/herself to being a disciple of Jesus to the Scott and Kimberly Hahn event on October 20. Purchase a ticket for someone who is not yet a disciple of Jesus and invite him/her along with placing the ticket in his/her hands as your guest. Scott and Kimberly will be speaking at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church on Saturday, October 20, 7:45 am 1pm. Tickets are $20/person and can be purchased from the St. Raphael website raphael.org or in the St. Raphael parish office. Come to understand, and leave being able to defend your faith. Respect Life Month is in October. We are cherished, chosen, and sent by God to love one another as He loves us. In doing so, we help build a culture that cherishes all human life. The respect life prayer service during mass and white crosses placed on the lawn on September 29 and 30 serve as a memorial for the approximately 1,788 babies aborted each day in the United States (most recent report by the CDC, 2014). Additional resources and prayers are located on the Elizabeth Ministry table in the Narthex. May we pray and show by our words and actions that every human life is cherished and protected. Virtus Training at SMM St Mary Magdalene will be offering a Virtus Training opportunity for all individuals and parents looking to volunteer in the church. Virtus is a program that all adults must attend in order to volunteer or chaperone any activities or events that work with children or vulnerable adults. If you have not gone through Virtus before, please contact Ashley to get registered for the class as soon as possible. Please contact Ashley at ashley@smm-waupaca.org or , ext 109 The Water Project Every day in rural communities and poor urban centers throughout sub-saharan Africa hundreds of millions of people suffer from lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and children especially bear the burden of walking miles to gather water from streams and ponds-full of water-borne diseases that are making them and their families sick. The Water Project is a non-profit organization with a platinum rating that is helping communities gain access to clean, safe water by training, expertise and financial support for water project construction. They not only drill wells, but provide training for local people to keep the pumps maintained and producing water. You will see the wooden wishing well in our Religious Ed hallway that collects your change to donate to this water project. Thank God each time you take a drink, wash your hands, shower, or wash dishes that we have clean, safe, abundant water that we take for granted! 4 October 7, 2018
