2 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES September 16, 2018 (Jas. 2:14-18) Vinal Van Benthem ofs It has been said that when we keep something we don t need or use we are stealing it from the poor. Over the last few weeks I found myself with more time on my hands than usual so I decided it was time to clean out some closets. I soon discovered that I had clothes that I hadn t worn in months, if not years! I tried to make it a priority to concentrate on winter clothes, since even the poor have little use for cotton t-shirts and shorts in December. After going through a few boxes and checking shelves I found that I probably have almost as many pairs of gloves and knit caps as I did when my kids were little. Admit it even here in mid-wisconsin the only extra knit cap one really needs is an orange one, in case you decide to take your dog for a walk during hunting season! There was a cartoon in the New York Times a few years ago. A group of street people were huddled together, warming their hands over a small fire in a garbage can. The caption under the cartoon read: It s winter time for the rich ladies to go through their closets and give us their old summer clothes. If a brother or sister has nothing to wear but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? (Jas. 2:15-16) The message is clear. It s one thing to say I have faith but quite another to act on it. Do I believe that Christ is truly present in each and every human being and that each is my brother or my sister? I say I do but do my works reflect that? Do I believe that I am created in the image of a loving God? I say I do but do I love unconditionally as God loves? Do I love those people gathered around that small fire in a slum in New York, or Chicago, or Green Bay? Do I love enough to give back to the poor what is properly theirs? What do my works say about my faith? 4 New Bible Study Do you have questions about what and why we do things in Mass? If the answer is yes, please attend the new Bible study, A Biblical Walk Through The Mass, by Edward Sri. The study will be every Tuesday, at 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. For questions call Kay at or Barb at CCW Meeting Calling all ladies! Our St Mary Magdalene CCW group is planning a meeting on Saturday, September 22 at 3:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. This meeting will be to discuss the upcoming craft show in November. Anyone interested in helping is welcome to come. For questions call Audrey at CCW Craft Show Last November, our CCW bake sale and donated craft items table had fantastic results. Thank you to all who baked and donated craft items. We would love to have an even bigger donation of craft items this year. If you have any talent in a craft area, please consider donating at least one item to our sale. All items must be handmade. This year our craft show will be on Saturday, November 10. Have fun crafting this summer and be sure to save a few items for our show. Looking forward to seeing a lot of craft items. Audrey Wentzlaff, from your CCW committee. Parish Cemetery Information Please pick up all cemetery flowers by October 1 so that autumn clean-up can be done. If you do not remove them we will assume that you no longer want them. All flowers left will be disposed of so that the caretakers can get the cemetery ready for winter. If you have Autumn/Winter flowers to put on a grave you may do so after Nov. 15. Thank you! Next weekend, September 22 & 23, is the Fourth Sunday of the month. Social Justice will be selling Fair Trade items after each Mass. We will also be collecting food items for area Food Pantries. Please bring your nonperishable items to church and place them in the large wooden box in the Narthex. St. Vincent de Paul Store, Appleton St. Vincent de Paul Appleton is in urgent need of socks and underwear - all sizes, gender, ages. They also need furniture sets (including love seats and couches). We haven't had many donations of these items, which truly make a difference for our neighbors-in-need as they rebuild their lives. We're also looking for more clothes for school-age boys so they can start the year off on the right foot. Please call Emily Brown at for more information. Who is a Chemo Angel? Anyone who's witnessed cancer first hand knows what a devastating disease it is. Chemo Angels is a volunteer group dedicated to adding a ray of sunshine to the lives of those undergoing treatment for cancer. We believe that men, women and children who are going through the physical, emotional and mental rigors of chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy deserve some pampering and special treatment. For many people with cancer the treatment is rough, but we, as Chemo Angels, bring a little bit of brightness to them. This is how our program works here at St. Mary Magdalene: We make suggestions to you for donations that we believe are appropriate for the current season (see page 3). We then collect your donations and distribute them to RMC Cancer Center of Waupaca. It s amazing that a small gift from you can make a chemo patient s day a little brighter! Thank you for your support. 4 September 16, 2018
