2 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES June 24, 2018 (Isa. 49:1-6; Lk. 1:57-66, 80) Vinal Van Benthem ofs What s in a name? Well, if your name is as unusual as mine the answer might be quite a bit! A combination of Vincent and Alice, my name (Vinal) was a quick reversal of syllables from Alvin, my parent s first choice for the boy they were expecting. Over the years my name has offered an easy conversation starter as well as a problem for some of my teachers in early grade school who insisted that since there was no St. Vinal it was all up to me! Not an easy assignment for a 6-yr. old, but from the distance of several decades I can see the part it played in the trajectory of my life. Last names can also be important. Being born into a certain family can influence who we will be friends with and perhaps even who we will marry! Consider Romeo and Juliet, or the Hatfields and the McCoys. And what about ethnicity? Having moved into a largely Polish neighborhood when our children were small our Dutch family name sometimes engendered a certain amount of suspicion. After all, how could one possibly not know what to put into the basket to bring for blessing on Holy Saturday? How many children grew into the expectations associated with those surnames whether Polish or Italian, Greek or German? Elizabeth and Zachary were expecting and their relatives had certain expectations about what they would name their child. But God had other ideas. This child would have the name God chose for him, not the name chosen by human relatives. This child would not be limited or defined by what others expected of him. Called from birth and given his name in his mother s womb he, like Isaiah, would be God s servant and would only be concerned about fulfilling God s expectations. Before we were born God named us. Child of God is our family name. And just like those other family names, this one brings with it certain expectations. What then will this child be? A weekend based on St. Ignatius Principles of Discernment. For information and to register call or text Sr. Julie Ann at Welcome Father Xavier Father Xavier will be celebrating his first weekend Masses at St Mary Magdalene on July 7 & 8. Due to the transition, there will be no daily Mass on July 4, 5 & 6. The first daily Mass will be held on July 11. Please note: The First Friday Mass and Adoration scheduled for Friday, July 6 will be held on Friday, July June 24, 2018

3 Ministry of the Sick. Times of illness are stressful. We wish to visit with you at your home or in the hospital. Please notify us at the parish office of your desire for prayers, visits, Holy Communion, anointing of the sick and other needs. Because of federal privacy laws, notification must come from you or a family member. Prayer Shawls If you have a family member who is homebound and would like a visit from Fr. Amal or from Lauri, our Pastoral Minister, please contact the parish office, and we will arrange a convenient time to visit. Through the Prayer Shawl Ministry, we are able to give the sick a beautiful prayer shawl made by one of our parish volunteers. If you know of someone who is sick and might enjoy a prayer shawl, please contact Lauri at the office number ( ) or at lauri@smm-waupaca.org. Parents planning for the Sacrament of Baptism, please call the parish office at Lauri, the pastoral minister, will prepare parents for the Baptism of their child. Baptism preparation is scheduled on Wednesdays between 6-8 pm. Meetings last about an hour. Baptisms are normally scheduled on Saturday at the 4:30 pm Mass or Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm. Message From the Festival Committee The Festival Committee is looking for 6 to 10 garbage barrels for use at the Festival. Chemo Angels Summer is here! Chemo Angels is looking for anything having to do with Summer, plants, wind chimes, garden art, etc. Please, no food or drink items. Place your items in the tote by the parish office marked Chemo Angels, and we will distribute them to the patients. Calling all Angels! Chemo Angels is looking for your help. This year we are giving patients gift cards for their birthdays. They can be from anywhere you like and for any amount you want to give. If you like, you can even give a Scrip Card!! Our VBS theme is SURPRISE! STORIES OF DISCOVERING JESUS. Jesus surprised the people he met. Are you ready to be surprised by Jesus? Are you ready to ask questions and discover more about him? Then come along on the journey, open your eyes and see what you will find. Includes scripture, prayer, drama, music, games, and activities, all nicely integrated to help children meet and follow Jesus. The Festival Silent Auction Needs You! The Silent Auction Committee is requesting your help! We need items, large or small, that can be used in the Silent Auction. Some examples are: hand-crafted items, any NEW items, crafts, theme baskets or donations of unique dining experiences, entertainment, or recreational outings. You could also auction off your Time or Talent - bake cookies once a month for a year, rake leaves in the fall, weed a garden this summer, wash someone s windows, wash a car, babysit, etc. The ideas are endless! No item is too small! Corrine and Jo will create something wonderful with your items. 5 CCW Bake Sale - Ladies! CCW is having it s annual bake sale on the weekend of July 7 & 8, after each of the Masses. Please help us by donating your favorite baked good, candies, jams & jellies, plants or fresh produce. Pilgrimage to the Basilica at Holy Hill The K of C Councils of Assembly 1862 are sponsoring a pilgrimage to Holy Hill. This is open to all interested Catholics. The trip will take place on Tuesday, September 18 and the cost is $35 per person. The price includes bus transportation and lunch. The bus will leave from St. Mary Magdalene parking lot at 7:00 am and return at 5:00 pm. Make checks payable to KC Council 6228 and payment is due on August 23. For more information call Pak Klier at Last November, our CCW bake sale and donated craft items table had fantastic results. Thank you to all who baked and donated craft items. We would love to have an even bigger donation of craft items this year. If you have any talent in a craft area, please consider donating at least one item to our sale. All items must be handmade. We will be using the proceeds toward our kitchen in the new fellowship wing. This year our craft show will be on Saturday, November 11.
