In 2012 she started a Kickstarter program in which she raised over $1.2 million for her new album- well over her $100,000 goal. For those of you unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is an online crowdfunding platform that allows artists, merchants, and the like advertise a project that they need funded and supporters voluntarily give whatever they want. In raising those $1.2 million funds, Palmer created the highest crowdfunded music project ever. Amanda Palmer wasn t always a rock star though. Before her music career, Palmer started off as a living statue called the Eight Foot Bride. She would stand in Harvard Square in Boston on a milk crate wearing a wedding dress and painted face. Anyone who put money in her collection hat would receive a simple flower and direct eye contact. She describes those moments as deeply personal and as a moment of falling in love a bit as two people see each other and acknowledge that not only a gift of money was shared, but the gift of belonging. Just as it was during her living statue days, Amanda Palmer argues that in the practice of letting people pay for music rather than making them pay for music creates a relationship. There is a level of vulnerability as the artist asks the donor for help and there is a practice of trust that happens in these moments knowing that one s goals could be brought to ruin if not enough people respond. Such vulnerability and trust creates relational community. Continued on page 2

2 Page 2 Volume 2018, Issue 9 Continued from Page 1 Throughout the year, churches, including Saint John s, make appeals to its members to support its ministry with financial gifts and talents. We are not an organization that forces its members to pay dues in order to be a part of our community. We don t make each other share our gifts, but we let each other share our gifts. Amanda Palmer suggests that so many people are ashamed to ask for help when they need it because we re afraid of rejection, but also because we don t even think we deserve what we re asking for. She continues, We have to truly believe in the validity of what we re asking for (Amanda Palmer, The Art of Asking, page 13). As we ask each other to give of our time and resources we form deeper relationships as we make ourselves vulnerable in giving our gifts. We trust that those gifts will actually make the world a better place and encourage old Christians and new believers to trust in the power of Jesus love to carry us through every tribulation in life. I pray that we can ask new and old folks to share their gifts without shame and that we truly believe in the validity of what we are asking for. We are asking each other to join in sharing the Good News of Jesus with the world. We are asking each other to share our God-given gifts with the church of Jesus so that all people might know that they are loved by God and that God s kingdom of peace, love, justice, and mercy is unfolding before our very eyes. When we invite someone to come to worship or join in cleaning up Pennypack Park or to volunteer at Feast of Justice, we have to believe in the validity of what we re asking for. When we invite others to give of their talents or resources either among those who are already official members of our church or in the evangelism practice of inviting someone to join this community of Christ, we are inviting others to join in God s work of making the world a better place. We share this Good News and invite new and old co-workers to join in this mission because we believe it to be a valid endeavor- we believe the work of love and mercy through Jesus Christ makes a difference in the world. We believe that Jesus love has the power to save the world. So don t be ashamed. Go ahead, ask for help in this good work of God The Reverend Daniel K. Eisenberg

3 Volume 2018, Issue 9 Page 3 PRESCHOOL NEWS Greetings from your Preschool Director, By now many of you are back into your normal routine whatever it may be. Preschool could not have started the year off better! With many smiling faces and only a few tears were shed we are very excited for this school year! Back to School night was a great success! Our parents were very excited and welcomed us into their families. When entering a new school, it s not just hard for the student but it is hard for the families as well. Many cases this is the first time their children are leaving their care during the day or not going to their babysitters and grandparents house. Knowing that the families have chosen us, St. John s Preschool is a very special feeling. They are starting their school year off right with new friends, new teachers, and new surrounding! Soccer Shots and Chapel will be beginning in October! We are looking forward to a great time with both! We are not doing Chic-Fila Welcome Back night this year due to some issues we experienced last year. However, we will be hosting a CHIPOLTE night on October 23, 2018 from 2327 Cottman Avenue (Roosevelt Mall). Please find the attached flyer and show to the cashier when paying! There will be extra copies of the flyer in the church office as well as in the back of the Sanctuary! Kid Stuff Coupon Book Fundraiser will be starting October 8 th and will run until October 26 th! This year they not only have the book they also have an APP you can use on your phone. This app is good anywhere in the country! If you have friends and relatives that are interested in these books they are also available to purchase online for their state. If you are interested in purchasing a Kid Stuff Coupon book please see Gina or Terry in the office, or stjohnslutheranpreschool@verizon.com and let us know how many books you would like to purchase. You may also leave a note for us in our mailbox! If you are interested in volunteering with Preschool during the holidays or would like to come in and read a book and help the teachers with a lesson please have all clearances in church office. We are always looking for special visitors to come in and take part in our daily lesson plans! Clearances are available online at Thank you for your continued support, Gina Hughes Ghughes.stjohns@gmail.com

We celebrated Johnny Appleseed s Birthday with Apple experiments, art, making homemade applesauce, tin pan hats, and learning all about yummy apples. Can t wait to see what October brings for our Full Day friends! Mrs. Donna Conway FULL DAY TEACHER

14 Page 14 Volume 2018, Issue 9 WORSHIP AND MUSIC Worship and Music wanted to keep you informed about the Music Director position. We are still looking for a permanent Director, so if you know of anyone that is interested, please pass their information on to Mary Jones. We have, however, lined up an interim person to play at all services beginning Oct 13/14 th. He is a very talented organist/pianist, able to play the variety of music we use. We continue to pray that the right person will be found soon and will be reposting the job to various music schools in the area. There are quite a few Lutheran churches in our synod looking for an organist and music directors, which shows it is not that easy to find people interested in the position.
