As our bodies and minds resign themselves to the inevitable cessation of life, our church calendar brings forth a somber feast to fit our temperament these increasingly darkened days.

November 2, 2014 St. Ann Church & Model Schools Haiku Road Kaneohe, Hawaii All Saints Day November 1 All Souls Day November 2 On November 2 nd the church celebrates the Feast of All Souls. As our bodies and minds resign themselves to the inevitable cessation of life, our church calendar brings forth a somber feast to fit our temperament these increasingly darkened days. The Solemnity of All Souls comes almost as an afterthought to that of All Saints. Having commemorated all the blessed who enjoy the face of God in their death, we turn our thoughts to the other souls who await the fullness of God s glory. The sequence of these two feasts implies a belief that those who have lived lives of holiness enjoy God s presence and can intercede for us before the throne of God. The feasts also imply that others, having lived more sinful lives, still await that glory. These are the dead we remember every November 2 nd, members of our families, friends, the lonely and forgotten, and others who have touched our lives. On this day we pray that God will have mercy on them and grant them the vision of blessedness for which they longed. The liturgy for this day still offers three Masses. When the church created this feast in the middle ages, it became so popular that priests received the unusual permission to celebrate three Masses that day. The permission remains, as do the separate texts for the Masses, even though not every parish takes advantage of the permission. The readings come from the collection of texts we use for funerals. When the church gathers for prayer on November 2 nd we still remember the faithful departed, even when it falls on a Sunday. Those who assisted us in life receive assistance from us in their death. 2 The Feast of All Souls Today s Reflection: "Give them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them forever." This is the proper entrance antiphon for today's feast of All Souls. Today we remember our family and friends who have died and gone before us in faith. We take time today to pray for the souls of those who have died yet who are in need of purification before beholding God face to face. On this day of remembrance and prayer, we make the words of the entrance antiphon our own. May those who have died know the eternal rest and perpetual light of heaven. Who are the people for whom you will offer your prayers on this day of remembrance? Next Sunday s Readings - November 9, 2014 Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, John 2:13-22 The rabbis of Israel had a saying: When Israel wandered, God dwelt with them; when Israel had a dwelling, God wandered. Of course, God did not actually desert the chosen people. What the rabbis were saying was that it is a common human weakness to mistake concrete, physical people, places, and things for the actual presence of the Lord. Israel believed that the top of Mount Sinai, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Jerusalem temples were places wherein God truly dwelt. They were right, but they also learned that mountains get left behind, arks get lost, and temples get destroyed. When Thomas Aquinas was developing his understanding of the real and substantial presence of the Lord in the Eucharist, it was necessary for him to explain how the physical actuality of the bread and wine got left behind. He knew that, ultimately, our earthly, physical things cannot be, in and of themselves, the presence of God. The scriptures today use many images for God s dwelling places: a temple filled with living, flowing water for a thirsty desert people; the flesh and blood of the baptized early Christians, who did not have the luxury of large public places to identify them; the Temple of Jerusalem, tainted by scandalous behavior, which would ultimately be destroyed. Finally, there is Christ, the only begotten of God, the dwelling place in flesh of God s eternal Word. For all the many places the Spirit might lead us to find God, only to Jesus Christ can we look for the eternal, living presence of the one true God. John the Baptist, is the namesake of the Lateran cathedral. Like him, our mission is to know God s dwelling in us through the water and Spirit of our baptism, and to make our sole purpose in life the proclamation of the Good News of our salvation in Christ. The Pregnancy Centers aid women and men who are concerned about the possibility of an unplanned pregnancy. They provide free pregnancy testing, information, and support within a compassionate, confidential and non-judgmental setting. The Pregnancy Centers also provide educational programs for interested groups. Through these services the Pregnancy Centers help to empower and encourage women and men to become strong, healthy and responsible people.
