1 To seek, trust and glorify God through humble service and continual prayer. To raise up devoted disciples. June 3, 2018 St. Ann Church & Schools Haiku Road Kaneohe, Hawaii Mass Schedule: Saturday, 6PM; Sunday, 7AM, 8:45AM, 11:30AM, 5PM Weekdays: 7AM The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ We celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. It commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. The Church introduces the celebration of this Solemnity during Ordinary Time so that the faithful will not lose sight of the institution of the Holy Eucharist. In 1206, Saint Juliana of Mont Cornillon, who became an Augustinian nun in Liége, France, had a great veneration for the Blessed Sacrament and longed for a special feast in its honor. She had a vision of the Church under the appearance of the full moon having one dark spot, which signified the absence of such a solemnity. She made known her ideas to the Bishop of Liége and to the Archdeacon of Liége and who later became Pope Urban IV. After a century of increasing support from Rome, Pope Clement V published a decree which embodied Pope Urban IV's decree and ordered the adoption of the feast at the General Council of Vienna (1311.) In our 21 st century the celebration of this feast not only expresses our belief in the real presence of Christ but also calls us to be witnesses of Christ who gave us his Body and Blood for nourishment in order to be strengthened in service for others. Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary
2 Solemnity of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ Today s Reflection: Today, we focus our attention on the reason we come together each week. Jesus has given himself up for all of us. Take it; this is my body.this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. With his own body and blood he gives each of us the greatest gift we can ever receive himself. Do you recognize the commitment you make when you accept the Body and Blood of Christ into yourself? Next Sunday s Readings - June 10, Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Genesis 3: Corinthians 4:13-5:1 Mark 3:20-35 EVIL AND SIN If you want to be chic these days, don t talk about evil or sin. Sin is not an acceptable topic of conversation in most circles. It s okay to converse about pathologies, inimical environmental effects, or negative physiological and/or psychological influences when dealing with what used to be called evil and sin. But most people seem to agree that evil and sin themselves are passé, antediluvian idioms, nasty, obscene terms. I wonder. Are sin and evil only apocryphal allegories, mythic part of the dim past? Jesus, whom we believe to be true, real, and part of the present, not the past, doesn t seem to think so. Jesus seems to think that both exist. Jesus sees sin and evil as an oil slick, quick to defile pure and innocent shores; as asphyxiating weeds, bound to choke the freshly sown seed. Jesus took sin and evil very seriously. He took great care to point them out and to cast them out wherever he went. He took great pains to exorcise evil and to combat sin far and wide, as far as the cross. VANQUISHING EVIL AND SIN We who claim to be doers of God s will and thus brother, sister, and mother to Jesus, can take up his crusade against evil and sin. And we can do it without fear; first of all, because Jesus triumphed on the cross; and second, because we have the powerful word of God on it, a word that announced our triumph from the very beginning. After all, God s word is creative. It does what it says: it vanquishes sin, it leads to redemption. All we must do is be receptive to it. Then, no matter our vocation, no matter our failings, no matter how puny our faith, God s mighty word in us will triumph over evil, will cast out all sin. Copyright 2005, World Library Publications.
