St. Ann s Parish welcomes Father Pat Fanning, ss.cc. who has been assigned here until October Some of you may already recognize him as he would regularly attend mass with the novices from Sacred Hearts Center (Bethany). He has also presided at a few masses here in the past. Father Pat was born in New York City but grew up in New Jersey. He was worked in various places such as Rochester, New York and the Bahamas. His most recent assignment has been as Novice Master for the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts - US Province. Since there is not a novitiate this year, he has been assigned to St. Ann as a Parochial Vicar until October He has lived with Father Rich and Father Ed in Rome for a year while he was preparing to be the Novice Master. 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Reflection: The miracles Jesus performs are significant events. They are a living, loving and tangible sign that the Kingdom of God has finally arrived on earth. Jesus shows his concern by healing Simon s mother-in-law. This very action of healing is the foreshadowing of his resurrection, in which we will all share at the end of time. In what ways are you in need of healing? Next Sunday s Readings - February 11, Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Leviticus 13:1-2, Corinthians 10:31-11:1 Mark 1:40-45 Meditation: Do you seek the Lord Jesus with expectant faith? No one who sought Jesus out was refused his help. Even the untouchables and the outcasts of Jewish society found help in him. Unlike the people of Jesus' time who fled at the sight of a leper, Jesus touched the leper who approached him and he made him whole and clean. Why was this so remarkable? Lepers were outcasts of society. They were driven from their homes and communities and left to fend for themselves. Their physical condition was terrible as they slowly lost the use of their limbs and withered away. They were not only shunned but regarded as "already dead" even by their relatives. The Jewish law forbade anyone from touching or approaching a leper, lest ritual defilement occur. This leper did something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus could and would heal him. Normally a leper would be stoned or at least warded off if he tried to come near a rabbi. Jesus not only grants the man his request, but he demonstrates the personal love, compassion, and tenderness of God in his physical touch. The medical knowledge of his day would have regarded such contact as grave risk for incurring infection. Jesus met the man's misery with compassion and tender kindness. He communicated the love and mercy of God in a sign that spoke more eloquently than words. He touched the man and made him clean - not only physically but spiritually as well. How do you approach those who are difficult to love, or who are shunned by others because they are deformed or have some defect? Do you show them kindness and offer them mercy and help as Jesus did? The Lord is always ready to show us his mercy and to free us from whatever makes us unclean, unapproachable, or unloving towards others. Lord Jesus, inflame my heart with your love and make me clean and whole in body, mind, and spirit. May I never doubt your love nor cease to tell others of your mercy and compassion."

5 A Stewardship Prayer for Lent God of mercy, You have given us this special time to reflect on our lives, embrace the Good News and draw closer to You. During this season of Lent, help us use this time to fast and pray, be more generous and show others how to live in Christ. Let us see each day of this season as a new opportunity to renew our lives and gain a deeper appreciation of Your active presence in our hearts and our community of faith. Give us the grace to see Your face in others, especially the poor and those who suffer. And through your Spirit, enkindle in us the fire of Your love so that we may be better stewards of Your redeeming work throughout the world. We ask this through Jesus, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. IHS - Institute for Human Services We are looking for families or individuals to serve dinner at the Institute for Human Services (IHS) Men s and Women s Shelters. Two crews are needed to work at both shelters. If you'd like to join us, we meet on the 4 th Sunday of every month. The meals are already prepared; we volunteer to serve the food.
