2 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s Reflection: Prayer is the subject of today s scripture readings. The story of the battle in the first reading shows us when we cry out to God, we have the support of a community of believers. The story of the widow in the Gospel reminds us that her kind of persistence in prayer opens doors. Often when we face sickness, broken relationships or bitter disappointments, we can become weary in prayer. Let us not be afraid to cry out to the Lord in lament and at the same time offer thanks for the gifts our loving God gives so freely. How do you describe your own life of prayer? Next Sunday s Readings - October 23, Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sirach 35:12-14, Timothy 4:6-8, Luke 18:9-14 Meditation: How can we know if our prayer is pleasing to God or not? The prophet Hosea, who spoke in God's name, said: "I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice" (Hosea 6:6). The prayers and sacrifices we make to God mean nothing to him if they do not spring from a heart of love for God and for one's neighbor. How can we expect God to hear our prayers if we do not approach him with humility and with a contrite heart that seeks mercy and forgiveness? We stand in constant need of God's grace and help. That is why Scripture tells us that "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6; Proverbs 3:34). God hears the prayer of the humble Jesus reinforced this warning with a vivid story of two people at prayer. Why did the Lord accept one person's prayer and reject the other's prayer? Luke gives us a hint: despising one's neighbor closes the door to God's heart. Expressing disdain and contempt for others is more than being meanminded. It springs from the assumption that one is qualified to sit in the seat of judgment and to publicly shame those who do not conform to our standards and religious practices. Jesus' story caused offense to the religious-minded Pharisees who regarded "tax collectors" as unworthy of God's grace and favor. How could Jesus put down a "religious person" and raise up a "public sinner"? Jesus' parable speaks about the nature of prayer and our relationship with God. It does this by contrasting two very different attitudes towards prayer. The Pharisee, who represented those who take pride in their religious practices, exalted himself at the expense of others. Absorbed with his own sense of self-satisfaction and self-congratulation, his boastful prayer was centered on his good religious practices rather than on God's goodness, grace, and pardon. Rather than humbling himself before God and asking for God's mercy and help, this man praised himself while despising those he thought less worthy. The Pharisee tried to justify himself before God and before those he despised; but only God can justify us. The tax collector, who represented those despised by religious-minded people, humbled himself before God and begged for mercy. His prayer was heard by God because he had true sorrow for his sins. He sought God with humility rather than with pride.

4 Knights of Columbus - Chicken Sale Starting next weekend, our Knights of Columbus will be selling chicken to support the Pregnancy Problem Center. Sales will continue for two weekends with the pickup on Saturday, October 24. We are again selling BIGGER BIRDS. Instead of 1 ¼ pound halves, these are 1 ¾ pounds per half chicken, a better value. Prices are $6 for 1/2 chicken and $22 for 4 halves. Checks should be made out to the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. We appreciate your caring hearts! K of C Council Family Promise It s time for St. Ann to provide support for Family Promise at Kailua United Methodist Church. Because of you and other volunteers Family Promise was able to assist 243 parents and children in 2015, providing safe shelter, assistance in finding permanent house and, when needed, employment. Needed: Truck/Driver for the Kaneohe Christmas Parade Float: The RE/YM and St. Ann School students will participate in the Kaneohe Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 3, We are seeking support and are in need of a large truck for St. Ann's float. If you can help by donating your truck, driving skills and time to help St. Ann this year, please contact the RE Office. Hours are Sundays from 8 am - 2 pm and Monday through Thursday from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Closed on Fridays and Saturdays. Mahalo and God bless!

In his creating genius not only did he make sure to breathe life into us but he also gave us the faculty to choose between good and evil. As if that was not enough, he became one of us and allowed himself to be brutally killed by us his own creation that he may restore us into life in him. In between creation and his death and rising, he dotes on us by adorning the world we live in with greeneries topped with delightful vibrant colors: those flowers and fruits that delight our senses. The skies are filled with stars that twinkle his way of whispering to us that his love is there in darkness and that he forever lights our paths. How can we not make this most amazing Creator the first, central, and focal point of our existence? When we make him all that in our life, his manifestations of loving us first: creating and re-creating us as well dying daily for us through the Eucharist become for us our strength, making us gifts for God and for one another.
