3 The Pastoral Care Ministry assists the shepherding ministry of Briarwood by caring for members and friends of the church especially in times of sickness, infirmity, disability, bereavement or family crisis. We are located in the Altadena House along with the Counseling and Mercy Ministries. The most visible sign of the Pastoral Care Ministry is the Hospital List that is sent by to over 700 church members and staff each weekday. This list is used by recipients both as a guide for daily hospital visitation and as a prayer list for those who are hospitalized or bereaved. As Pastoral Care Pastor, I work closely with two teams of church members who help care for those who are hospitalized, homebound or have lost loved ones. The first, called Lay Pastors, are specially trained laymen who contact and come alongside widows, widowers and those who have been hospitalized. The second, called Grace Ladies, are a group of widows who minister to other widows. Their ministry of encouragement includes visiting and helping with practical needs. Twice a year they host a luncheon for all the widows in the church. The Pastoral Care Ministry also provides leadership in a variety of other areas. We arrange and conduct funerals for members who have lost loved ones; we help lead a monthly group for those who care for family members with dementia; we arrange anointing services for those who request special prayer for personal health needs; and we also sponsor a GriefShare group which meets for thirteen weeks twice a year for those who have lost a loved one or friend in death.
