4 Family news Congratulations To Ben and Tiffany Norman on the birth of their son, Weston Cole Norman June 27, pounds, 2 ounces 19 inches long Siblings: Silas and Bennett condolences Our hearts are with Cindy and Tim Councill with the passing of Cindy s father, Robert Baucom, July 13. Robert, 72, was a member of the American Legion Post 48 in Hickory and left many wonderful memories with the ones who knew him. Join us in lifting the Councill family in prayer. Our thoughts and prayers are David & Jan Scott and Sherry Winkler on the passing of David and Sherry s aunt July 19 th. This lovely lady was blessed with just shy of 90 blessed years on Earth, and was joyful in the knowledge that she was joining our Lord. Thank YOu Dear Mount Vernon, Thank you so much for allowing us to host Kaitlin s graduation reception in the Meadowview Room. Everyone we worked with was so kind and helpful. Blessings, The Horne Family Thank you for the plants. We will tend to them as a reminder that life does go on and will think of all of you. Thank you for your prayers and support. The Family of Cecil Russell, Bobby, Beu, James, and Janice Mount Vernon, Thank you for letting our church use the Lighthouse trailer in Bradford Park on Saturday. It was extremely helpful for the Backyard Bible Club. The children and their families were certainly blessed by your kindness. Please let me know if Laurel Springs can ever help Mount Vernon! For the Gospel, Travis Suits Farewell to Allison Critcher Most of you have had help from this lovely lady during your time here at Mount Vernon. Allison has always given more than was asked of her with a gracious spirit and servant s heart. Please take a moment to tell Allison Critcher thank you for her 7 great years of service to us at Mount Vernon. Although we are losing such a helpful hand here at Mount Vernon, we know that Allison is going on to expand the Kingdom of Christ within the University of Tennessee Knoxville and all those lucky enough to encounter her. We love you Allison! 4 GROW August 2015 mvbcb.org/resources/grow
5 August 9 Parents We are so excited for our rising 6th grade students to join us in youth! On August 9th we will be welcoming all rising 6th graders and parents to Sunday School. Please join us during the 2nd service hour. We start serving breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and worship begins at 9:45 a.m. At 10:00 a.m. we will dismiss your students to their class and have a special time with parents. We will discuss everything from our new youth schedule, to camps and retreats, to where students can serve in ministry. Rising 6th Graders to Bo s in Lenoir That same afternoon (August 9th) we will depart the church at 2:00 p.m. to head down to Bo s. This middle school only event is a great time for our new 6 th graders to hang out with the rest of our middle school group and their teachers. The cost is $20 and will include unlimited laser tag, minigolf, games, and bowling. We will be back at the church at 7:00 p.m. We hope to see you there! New Youth Schedule Make the most of every opportunity Ephesians 5:16 It is our goal to REACH as many students as we can, TEACH as many as we can, and RELEASE as many as we can. While we have done a good job of this over the past 4 years, there is room for improvement. Studies show that about 50% of teens will leave church once they leave the Youth Department. However, students that have at least 5 adult Christian influences will be 95% more likely to remain in church during college and beyond. So after much prayer, discussion, and planning we are moving forward with our new fall schedule. Sunday Mornings Due to growth we will be moving our Sunday School classes to the gym. We will still serve breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and start at 9:45 a.m. The major difference will be in our teaching style, as we will move to a master teaching session. During this time Jason will teach the entire group for 30 minutes. Afterwards our students will break out into tabletop discussion groups with our leaders. This time of and more... discussion will be in groups of 5-7 and will focus on the lesson that was just preached. Students will meet with the same leader every week and if they were to invite a friend they would join that group as well. These groups will be formed by relationships, gender and age, which means one table may have a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girl but never a middle school and high school girl at the same group. Our first Sunday in the gym is August 16. Home Groups Making a Wednesday night service can be tricky with your family s schedule. That s why we are going to launch 4 to 6 home groups that meet on different days and times throughout the week. Each group would teach identical material from Right Now Media (a video driven lesson archive) that would include speakers such as Francis Chan, Dave Ramsey and Tim Keller. Our goal is to provide as many home groups as needed to make sure that any student, no matter how hectic the schedule, is able to commit to a home group. These groups will run until the end of the fall semester and then will start again in January when school starts up. Our first week of home groups will begin August 24. We will be announcing our home group schedule in August! So many ways to help We are expanding our ministry, which has opened doors for all kinds of service opportunities. Here are some examples: Sunday morning discussion leaders Sunday morning set up and tear down crews Sunday morning breakfast preparation Home group mentors (adults and college students who will get to know students) Home group snack/meal providers (students love food!) Home group teachers So Christ may be magnified, Jason Powers mvbcb.org/resources/grow GROW August

9 Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Telephone Ministry TVTM Opportunity Thursday, August 27 4:15-6:30 p.m. Room 1304 & Library Would you like to help lead people to Jesus Christ? It s never been easier! Mount Vernon hosts a monthly call center site for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association s TV and Telephone Ministry (TVTM). Through their TV Ministry, BGEA airs special events, programs, and Billy Graham classics, nationwide, during which viewers are invited to call if they would like to respond to the Gospel message presented. We are here to answer those calls! This is a great opportunity for those who have experience sharing their faith, as well as for those who want to gain experience. It is very exciting to be personally involved in leading people to Jesus! And in a TVTM call center, they are calling in asking how to know the Lord! Volunteers in the call center are not limited to Mount Vernon members, other believers in our area can train and join us. Our TVTM opportunities are always open to those who are interested, but have not yet trained to serve in this ministry. Come see what it s all about! Our next call center will operate on August 27, we train volunteers and no one is asked to answer calls until they feel ready! *Our start time is 4:15, but we welcome people to arrive as soon as possible, so join us after work if that is what your schedule requires!
