3 Don t be scared, Johnny, you re doing great! Just keep playing and I ll take over. This is what Mrs. Schneider, the pianist of our little church in Nebraska whispered in my ear as I played piano for our children s Christmas musical. She was a gospel piano virtuoso. I was in seventh grade and mortified. I didn t know how to transition into the next Christmas song. I was entering a carol spin cycle. She saw my predicament, slid onto the bench and seamlessly took over hand-overhand. No one knew what she did. I received all the applause. But I knew that she had intentionally set me up for a Christmas musical success. I ponder that moment every Christmas. To this day, I see it as one of the initial ministry sparks that the Lord used to fan into flame a desire to foster the artistic gifts of all ages in my Christmas worship programs. This type of multi-generational Christmas presentation has been a hallmark of the Briarwood Christmas Festival for decades. I am honored to continue that legacy. This year part one will feature Christmas favorites with our Children s Choir, Youth Choir, Briarwood Ballet, Festival Orchestra, Chamber Ensemble and Chancel Choir. Part two will be a dramatic presentation of selections from Handel s Messiah. Joining us is special dramatic guest, Ralph McCloud as Handel. The original script is based on true events surrounding the life and Christian testimony of G. F. Handel. That, along with the Scriptures sung and the Gospel presented by Pastor Reeder, will be the type of evening to which you will want to invite friends and family young and old. Blessings on you as we celebrate Christ s birth together multi-generationally and if you are so inspired, you should plan to join us on stage next year!
