We are all called to carry on the mission of Jesus to build the Kingdom of God here on earth. For the school year, , we are looking for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school to be a part of the St. Joseph Parish Peer Leadership Team. The Peer Leadership Team is made up of high school students, who are trained to be leaders in our parish. As a team member, you will be trained to share your faith by giving talks, leading small groups, praying with others and planning activities. You will put this training into use on our Confirmation Retreats, in our Religious Education classes, at TARGET events, and while working with other parishes in our area. In the process of ministering to others, you will build friendships, have fun, and experience things that you may have never thought possible. We are looking for high school students, who want to share their gifts with the parish. The desire to love and serve Jesus is the most important quality that a member of the Team needs. That desire to love and serve Jesus enables us to live as he has called us, gives us the desire to serve others, and allows us to experience the joy in doing both. We also need people who can play an instrument, love to act, sing, write, and enjoy filming and creating video. We would love to have you use your gifts to share the Good News of Jesus. If you would like to be a part of this team, please attend our Information Night tonight, June 12, at 7pm in the Rectory Basement. During the meeting, we will discuss the commitment and the joys of serving on the team. The meeting will last about 1 hour, so please do your best to attend. If you have any questions or want more information, please call or Anthony Armando or TARGET@sjcnj.org TARGET Up Coming Dates: Tuesday, June 14- Hang Out Night - 7-9pm in the TARGET Room Sunday, June 19- No TARGET - We pray for all of our fathers. 2 ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ THE PASTOR S COLUMN GOOD NEWS FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE & ABOUT OUR SCHOOL At the last Parish Finance Council Meeting and Parish Pastoral Council, I shared some good news that members of both Councils asked me to tell you. As you know, each year in February the Archbishop's Annual Appeal takes place in all the parishes of the Archdiocese of Newark. Each parish is given a specific goal that is expected to be met. In the 2010 Appeal that took place before I became pastor, our goal was $95,276. The parish raised $61,581 or 67% of the goal. When the parish was given permission to hold its Capital Campaign some two years earlier, it was told that if the parish did not meet its Annual Appeal Goal it would need to make up the difference from its general revenue. At the end of this past February, I received a bill from the Archdiocese for that difference, namely, $33,695. I wrote to the Development Office stating the reasons that I believed warranted a reduction of the amount owed by the parish. I am happy to say that in response to my letter, we received not just a reduction, but the forgiveness of the entire outstanding balance. I can truly say I almost fell off my chair when I got that good news. But the good news did not stop there. I was also told that it might be worthwhile to speak to the Director of Development about a possible lowering of the parish goal for this current year. Our 2011 goal is $92,668. I followed that advice and the Director informed me that she would lower our goal for this current year by some $30,000. Amazing! Some people have the impression that the Archdiocese of Newark is not supportive of its local parishes. I must say that in my two assignments as pastor, I have found that to be completely untrue. The Archbishop and the various offices and departments of the Archdiocese have been most helpful and understanding. In fact, I recently called upon one of the offices for assistance and the staff went out of their way to provide me with the guidance and help I needed. When I thanked them they said, "Remember Father, we work for you and the parish." That support of the Archdiocese for our parish is also seen in the assignment of Father Roy Regaspi, a newly ordained priest, to St. Joseph's. Father Regaspi, who begins his ministry here on Wednesday, June 15, will be replacing Father Tony Ricarte who has received a new assignment to move him forward in his desire to become 2 a priest of the Archdiocese of Newark. He currently is a priest of the Archdiocese of Cebu in the Philippines. OUR PARISH SCHOOL On Wednesday, June 1, Mrs. Colette Vail, the principal of our school, Mr. Heath Winborn, our Director of Operations, and I met with some 175 parents in the gym to announce the tuition rates for the new year and also to explain some restructuring that will be taking place in our school in preparation for the new academic year. I am a firm believer in Catholic Education and I see our parish elementary school as an important part of the ministry of our parish. In order to strengthen our school, and to make certain it has a long and successful future, we have made a series of decisions that we believe will help us to reach those goals. These decisions were made in conjunction with the four professional educators who serve on our School Advisory Board and with others. Happy Students are ready to welcome the future at SJS! We have decided that each class will normally be required to have a minimum of 19 students, we will hire a Vice Principal for grades 5 through 8, we will restructure, renew, and name our Early Childhood Program, we will make physical improvements to the Lower and Upper School buildings we will increase technology, we will dedicate certain rooms for special subjects, we will assign priests as chaplains to each grade and ask them to teach a religion class at least two times each month in their assigned grades, we will launch a completely new school website, we will increase communication, marketing and seek to spread the good news about St. Joseph School we will restructure the PTO to allow for more communication and dialogue with parents, teachers, principal and pastor. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

5 PENTECOST SUNDAY GIVING THOUGHT Giving Thought is a new feature that will appear in our Sunday bulletin. It will encourage us to give thought and consideration to how we respond to God's challenge to share our time, talent, and treasure for the good of the Church and for the good of those in need. As Saint Paul wrote "Keep in mind the words the Lord Jesus himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" (Acts 20:35) Today, Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the day when the Holy Spirit brought the Church to life and sent it out to proclaim the message of the Gospel in word and action. That Spirit of God continues to move God's Church, inspiring us to spread the Gospel by our words and by our act of forgiveness, kindness, and generosity. Certainly our response to our parish's Summer Food Drive is evidence of the Holy Spirit is working at Saint Joseph Parish. FOOD DRIVE THIS WEEKEND! Please help a neighbor in need by bringing that bag, filled with non-perishable food, to the Rectory Garage this weekend June 11 & 12. Your generous donations will go to the Food Pantry at Ascension Church in New Milford and to the Food Pantry at Father Peter Wehrle s Parish, Our Lady of Fatima in North Bergen. The food will be picked up and delivered early in the morning on Monday, June 13. You may also make a monetary donation. Please make the check payable to St. Joseph Church, mark the envelope Food Drive and mail it to the Rectory or place it in the box provided in the Rectory. Your help will put food on the table and hope back into their lives. Thank you for always caring and your sharing! BIBLE STUDY GROUPS NOW FORMING There was a great deal of enthusiasm generated at last weekend's promotion of the Great Adventure Bible Series. Groups are now forming for the studies that will start in this September. Newcomers are encouraged to sign up for The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 week in-depth study is highly recommended, however for the first time this year, we are also planning to offer an eight week introduction called A Quick Journey Through the Bible. Our parish has enjoyed participating in this nationally known DVD based program since Other studies being offered include: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom and Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come. For further information visit or contact Pat Fakharzadeh at or her at bible@sjcnj.org. 5 THE SURVEY SAYS... The Pastoral Parish Council conducted an in-pew survey on March 19 and March 20 during our Sunday Masses. We asked parishioners to identify 3 things that they liked about St. Joseph Parish and 3 things that they would like to see happen at our parish. In response to a large number of suggestions to offer more programs for our youth, for families and more service to our community, the Pastoral Parish Council is planning a parish wide day of service. This will be a Stewardship Day where we will have an opportunity to offer our time and talent to make a positive difference. The event, on a yet to be determined date (sometime in the Fall 2011), will offer a variety of projects for people of all ages and all abilities. Our hope is to offer a list of opportunities that will encompass a full range of service needs...half day projects that address hunger, housing, stewardship of the earth, visiting the elderly, community building and many, many more. We need your help to make all this happen! The Parish Pastoral Council invites you to a kick-off meeting on Sunday June 26, at 11:30 am (immediately following our 10:30 am Mass) in the rectory/parish office meeting room. Light refreshments will be served. Come listen, share your ideas, and see if this might be something that you would like to do to make a positive difference. The Pastoral Council envisions this event as the start of an annual happening at St Joseph Parish. We show our love for God in our love for one another and especially for the least among us. Be a part of that love and join us for our kick off meeting. ANNUAL BOY SCOUT CAR WASH "St. Josephs Boy Scout Troop 142 is holding their annual Car Wash Fundraiser on Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 9 am to 1 pm in the lower school parking lot. Tickets are $5 and will be on sale after the masses on June 11th and June 12th. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards the purchase of camping equipment and supplies. Please help support the Boy Scouts and their annual fundraiser." SAVE THE DATE! Saint Joseph School will host its 12 th Annual Fall Craft Show, featuring a wide variety of exhibitors displaying their handmade crafts. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 10 am to 4 pm at St. Joseph s lower school. Watch bulletin for forthcoming information.
