Diocesan Website years on from the 95 Theses The Reformation is said to have started 500 years ago this month, because it was on 31st October 1517 now celebrated as Reformation Day that German priest and theologian Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of All Saints Church in Wittenberg. This action sparked huge debate in the Church that led to the birth of Protestantism, but it was intended merely to be a series of proposals for discussion, principally on the corrupt practice of selling letters of indulgence for forgiveness of sins. His own emphasis on salvation by faith and on the Bible as the central religious authority was not new it was propounded by St Augustine but his gift for expressing it caught the public imagination. Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany, in In 1501 he enrolled at the University of Erfurt, and attained a Master s degree in In July of that year, he got caught in a violent thunderstorm and vowed to become a monk if he survived. As a result, he abandoned his plans to study law and entered an Augustinian monastery. When he propounded his theses out of love for the truth and from desire to elucidate it, he was professor of Moral Theology at the University of Wittenberg. One of the things that outraged him was the sale of indulgences to finance the rebuilding of St Peter s Basilica in Rome. Luther was excommunicated in 1521 and died in 1546 during a visit to Eisleben. The Book of Common Prayer was first published in England three years later. 3 From the Rector... I was sitting in a coffee shop recently, when I overheard two men having a conversation about gold cuff-links. (I wasn t trying to listen to what the men were saying, but they were speaking loudly!) One of the men said his father had given him the cuff-links when he was six years old. During the conversation, they discussed whether the cuff-links were nine carat gold or eighteen carat gold. They talked about how the price of gold fluctuates and the impact that would have on what the cuff-links were worth. One of the great truths of scripture is that our value and worth doesn t fluctuate in God s sight. He loves each one of us, as if we were the only person on the earth. His love for us is pure and perfect. He declares His love for people, for individuals in His Word the Bible; and he demonstrates His love through the coming of the Son of God into the world and through His death and resurrection - that s how much God thinks you are worth! So please remember you are loved by God, even in the changes and challenges of life. This harvest season is a further reminder of God s love and care; He continues to fulfil His promise, that while the earth remains seedtime and harvest shall not cease. (Genesis 8:22) How Much Does God Think We Are Worth? Pray for favourable weather so that crops can be harvested, pray for those whose crops have failed and for those who are unable to harvest their crops because of fear or because they are displaced from their homes. Pray too, that out of the abundance of the earth s resources, the needs of all people will be provided. Pray that we and others will really recognise our value and worth to God, that we and others will recognise the reality of God s love and care for us. As we and others recognise these things, may we respond to God s love. In choosing to follow Jesus, in choosing to put our trust in Jesus as our Saviour and in choosing to be obedient to Him, may we know God rather than just know about Him. In knowing Him, may we know the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In knowing Him, may we know our true value and worth and reach our full potential in Him and for Him. In knowing Him, may our desire be to make him known, so that others can know their true value and worth and come to living faith in Jesus as their Saviour and Lord. Ulster Project Delaware In July, four young people from the parish and other young people from Banbridge and the leaders of the group went to Delaware USA. Ulster Project Delaware is a cross community initiative designed to help young people foster positive relationships. The young people stayed with American host families, they participated in a range of team building and leadership activities, and had opportunities to experience aspects of American life and culture. Where do I start with UPD? Honestly it was the best summer ever, and I would happily do it all over again. During the month, I made so many new friends that I will treasure forever. I also gained a new family, my UPD one and my Moore family! During all the fun travels and activities, we learned we are all the same in God s eyes. I would go back in a heartbeat and I am counting down the days to see my UPD family again! - Nadia Ewart UPD was the best summer of my life. The program was developed to help build relationships between young people of different backgrounds and it has certainly got close to achieving its goals. I ve made so many new and amazing friends that I will keep throughout life. We travelled to many places and took part in many activities all helping us become a family. That was what we became, I now have an American sister and family that I love dearly and I miss. I would do it all again in a heartbeat! - Sophie MacFarlane During the month of July, myself, Sophie, Nadia and Katie participated in the program Ulster Project Delaware, where we stayed with American host families in Wilmington, Delaware. The aim of UPD is to decrease religious tensions in Northern Ireland, but also to foster lifelong friendships between teenagers from different countries and religious backgrounds. For me, the experience was life changing and I never thought the friendships I would make would be this special and unique. It opened my eyes to different religions and ways of life and helped me see things from a different perspective. It also showed me that the strongest of relationships don t take long to build and those relationships can last a lifetime. - Emilia Moore SEAPATRICK PARISH MAGAZINE 17
