3 From the Rector... Greetings in the name of Christ During the past few months I ve watched as a garden has taken shape, as flower beds have been prepared as flowers and shrubs have been planted and begun to take root. The ground has been rotavated, levelled and grass seed has been sown, it has taken root, it has begun to grow and its done so well that its even been cut. Gardeners may encourage growth by watering and feeding, by the care and attention they give to what is growing, to what has been planted. When things aren t growing and developing, as we expect, we sometimes begin to ask questions because we know growth is natural and normal. Why are the apple trees there? Why are the raspberry canes there? Why are the gooseberry bushes there? Why are the strawberry plants there? Why are the tomato plants there? Why do gardeners sow/plant lettuce, carrots, cabbage, potatoes. In the garden, in the greenhouse? Why do farmers sow fields of barley and wheat? Why do farmers and market gardeners plant acres/hectares of vegetables, fruit trees and flowers? It s all about growth, development and producing a harvest. God s looking for and longing for spiritual growth, spiritual development and a spiritual harvest in our lives. In order for spiritual growth, spiritual development and a spiritual harvest to develop in our lives the first thing that is necessary is that we have had a spiritual planting that we have experienced a spiritual birth through trusting in Jesus Christ as our Saviour. After that we ve got to go for spiritual growth and development, and that is an ongoing process as we read and apply God s Word, the Bible, to our lives; and as we respond to the Holy Spirit. As we ask Him to guide us, help us and encourage us in that process of spiritual growth and development. Grow More. Grow more like Jesus as you follow Him and live for Him in the power of the Holy Spirit. Grow More!! Roderic GROW MORE! seapatrick parish magazine 03

Although most of us no longer have crops to present to the Lord at harvest time, the harvest season gives us an opportunity to make a special thank-offering to God for all we receive from him. If you have a Weekly Envelopes Box please use the Harvest Thanksgiving Envelope provided. If you do not have weekly envelopes, please put your Gift in an envelope, marked Harvest and add you name and address if you wish. The harvest season gives us an opportunity to make a special thank-offering to God for all we receive from him. Thank you. seapatrick parish magazine 07

Each day was a fun filled extravaganza of music, dancing, games, craft and wonderful stories about the life of Daniel and his friends. We learned that God has a special plan for each one of our lives just like he had for Daniel Personally I felt so blessed not just by the number of kids that turned up each day but by the wonderful group of leaders helping out each day in so many different ways. So I would like to say a huge thank you for everyone who helped in any way. It was such a blessed week and God will carry that work forward for years to come. Thanks again, Mark. 15 BBQ and Fun Evening On Saturday 10th September we had our second BBQ and Fun Evening where we invited people from the church and community to come and enjoy life together. Like last year, there was a great turnout. There were loads of activities, Helter Skelter, Cage Football, Human Table football, Inflatables, face-painting, balloon modelling, Gaming Bus, Music, Magician, a glow stick treasure hunt, Tea/Coffee, BBQ and of course the opportunity to sit and chat. There was something for everyone. God blessed the event with great weather and there was amazement and delight at the giant rainbow over head half-way through the evening - a visual reminder that God is with us in everything. There was plenty of buzz, excitement and joy in the church grounds, thank-you to all the volunteers who made this possible and thank you to everyone who came along. Some of the comments received from the event were as follows; Just moved into the area, what time is your service at on Sunday? We came last year, kids then came to Holiday Bible Club, what other things can we come to? We couldn t believe that you invited us all in, thank you so much. (local teenagers) Golden Wedding Anniversary We offer our congratulations to David & Dorothy McKibbin of Castlewellan Road, Banbridge who recently celebrated their Golden Wedding on holiday with family in Spain & Carlingford David & Dorothy were married 50 years ago on 2 July 1966 in The Church of The Holy Name, Greenisland. 17 Curiosity Curiosity leads people to do many things. Curiosity can cause some people to go further on a journey or a walk than they intended because they want to see what s around the next corner or over the next hill. Curiosity can cause some people to read, listen or watch longer than they intended. Curiosity can be good, it can motivate people to explore and discover new things. But curiosity needs to be channeled in the right direction. If we allow curiosity to take us along wrong paths, it can be damaging and detrimental for us and for others. Curiosity about drugs and what experience they cause can lead people to misuse drugs or take illegal drugs. And many of us know from the media that sometimes the result of one step down that road can be fatal, but even when it isn t, taking drugs can have serious short and long term implications. Curiosity can also lead people to go to fortune tellers and mediums, to consult tarot cards, to attend séances or use ouija boards in an attempt to communicate with the spirits. Most, if not all, of these things have links to the occult. They are deceptive, dangerous and can have devastating consequences. When it comes to Halloween, what are we actually celebrating? Halloween has its roots in a pagan religious festival which began more than 2000 years ago. The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, Great Britain and France, believed that on this night, which was their New Year s Eve, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. They celebrated the feast of Samhain (Sow-en), when it was believed that the ghosts/the spirits of the dead returned to earth. After Christianity came to the region, Pope Gregory, in an attempt to replace the observance of Samhain (Sow-en), moved the Church s Feast of All Saints Day from the spring to the 1st November, in 835 AD. All Saints Day was/is a day to thank God for the lives of all his faithful servants. As with most feast day s the evening before, 31st October was marked by a sacred vigil in Church and that became known as All Hallow s Eve which in time became shortened to Halloween. From at least the 16th century, the festival included mumming and guising in Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man and Wales. This involved people going from house-to-house in costume (or in disguise), usually reciting verses or songs in exchange for food. If the household donated food it could expect good fortune; not doing so would bring misfortune. In some places this subsequently included threats to do mischief if they were not welcomed. Over the years this developed into Trick or Treat. In more recent times various other practices and customs have become linked to Halloween and it appears that many of the things associated with Halloween are linked more to pagan beliefs and practices than they are to Christian beliefs and practices. So let s be careful what we celebrate and how we celebrate, and if we wear fancy dress think about what it represents or promotes. Let s channel our curiosity in positive and wholesome directions. seapatrick parish magazine 17
