2 FROM THE DEAN A Curate s Egg Lent books are a bit of a curate s egg but this year I found Proff Luigi Gioia s book Say it to God absolutely inspirational. Learned, accessible, encouraging, stretching, it demands to be read and re-read. So, what was it that made such an impact? Well, it s not one of those how to books on prayer. Helpful though they are this book focuses more on what he calls the posture of prayer. He s not talking here about kneeling or standing with hands outstretched (the ancient physical posture often used in the church these days when the Lord s Prayer is said) but rather about what is going on when we pray our approach to God, framed by the Lord s Prayer. He majors on prayer being about dwelling in the transforming presence of God, joining with the Spirit praying in us. He has some great material on prayer and time, moving mountains in prayer and gathering up the whole of life, every bit of it, good and bad in prayer. Someone said to me that it really made her want to pray. And that I think is it s gift. It creates desire. The desire to be with God which of course is our vocation for all eternity. Archbishop Justin has prayer as one of his three priorities. In May the Archbishops have launched Thy Kingdom Come which is really a call to prayer and the Cathedral will be hosting a major event on Sunday 13th May with Bishop Nick. I invite you to ponder prayer, the place it has in your life and the desire that you have for God. As Luigi Gioia puts it, This search for prayer therefore is the defining challenge of our lives, the only reliable hope for meaning.' Dean Jerry Dean Jerry Canon Paul Canon Mandy

3 MISSION Worship at the Cathedral The Cathedral provides a variety of opportunities for people to gather together for worship each week. These times of worship are always evolving and, over time, changing to best meet the needs of those attending. Please speak to me if you have any comments or suggestions as it is precisely your comments and suggestions which inform the choices that are made in developing our shared worshipping life together. Please speak to me or telephone or me. Thank you. Canon Paul Monthly Bring and Share Lunch on Sunday For the last couple of months a mix of people have enjoyed a simple lunch at No 3 Cathedral Close after the morning service. Everyone brings something to share, savoury or sweet, and there is plenty of food to share around. You are welcome. No need to book, just come along. We hope to usually be able to do this on the third Sunday of each month. Dates for your diary are 20 May, and then 17 June, 15 July and 19 August. Canon Paul Deanery Fellowship There are no meetings in May but a proposal to go and see Sunshine on Leith on Tuesday 15 May at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. In June we will be studying a York course entitled Expecting Christ. It is written by Bishop David Wilbourne. We will be looking at moments in our faith and lives; where a door opens and lets Christ in - in family and in ourselves. There will be opportunities for prayer. We will meet in the Deanery on Tuesday evenings on 5, 12, 19 and 26 June from 7.30pm to 9.00pm. There will be a sign-up sheet shortly, beside the sound desk. Please speak to Sarah Maybury if you would like more details about the theatre trip and the York course. Our Purpose To serve Jesus Christ as a vibrant community of worship and mission enriching the City, the Diocese and further afield. Our Values Hospitality Faithfulness Wholeness

4 MISSION Shine has had a very busy six months, with activities ranging from a pop up farm in the summer where many children saw animals for the first time, and a variety of creative activities including printing our own book and installing a large art piece in the church. build community- predominantly around food! The biggest news was that we have eventually been given planning permission to install a biomass boiler so are very hopeful we will have a warm building for next winter and be able to use it more effectively. Next projects are a storyroom to be used for the children of West Bowling and a community cinema. We so appreciate your support to be able to do all of this for our community. Thank you. Alongside this we have seen more people from our community in need of help with basic needs food, clothes or gas and electricity. This has led us to start a new course trying to help people cope with a low income, teaching them to budget and how to eat well cheaply. We continue to run youth activities, exercise classes, refugee help, job club and more; plus alongside it all try to Mustard Tree at St Stephens Church do come and see it!

5 ECO Food for Discussion The Bradford Cathedral Woodland Project stems from the idea that, as part of our eco-credentials, we wish to make up for the trees cut down to provide paper for our orders of service, newsletters, publicity, and for the many meetings. We currently also have a weekly news sheet and the monthly Cathedral News and Diocesan News, when many of us could read electronic copies. Many of us follow the Diocesan enews and find it to be a wide-ranging and informative publication. The current issue runs the wonderful story of Rebekah Hinton. BRADFORD News to enews@leeds.anglican.org Rebekah Hinton, from West Bowling, who set up a clothing bank to help children in her local community has received a Rotary Young Citizen Award. When she was 16 she began a children's clothes bank and organised distribution through schools and charities. Now 20, she says she is 'surprised and delighted' to have received the Rotary Young Citizen Award. Read her story and watch a film here If maybe, those of us who are prepared to try this, signalled our intent, then copies of the relevant leaflets could be reduced by that number. Lindsey Bradshaw has calculated that such a step could save a few reams of paper which would soon mount up to one less tree to cut down. If you would like to consider joining such a scheme please talk to Lindsey or me about it. Thank you. Mike de Villiers Hidden Entrepreneurs We have received a letter of thanks from Traidcraft Exchange for the 71 we were able to send as a result of enjoying a Fairtrade Breakfast one snowy morning at the beginning of March. Kate Dixon, the Fundraising Coordinator thanks us for your amazing gift of 71. I m sure you will be as delighted as we are to know that your donation will be doubled by the UK Government as part of the UK Aid Match appeal. Her letter describes how this generosity will help hidden entrepreneurs like Kasahara from Kenya to grow their businesses and invest in brighter futures for themselves and families. Kasahara says Farming is much better as a business. Our parents farmed simply to eat but farming gives us a good position to plan for new things. If you are employed by someone else, you have no freedom to plan. Another hidden entrepreneur is Agnes. With initial support from Traidcraft Exchange, she can turn her potential into profit which means she can feed her family, educate her children and negotiate fairer prices for her produce. Continued over...

6 SERVICES Such entrepreneurs as Agnes and Kasahara are thus enabled to work their way out of poverty, not just for the short term BUT FOR GOOD. Eco tip of the month As the warmer weather finally approaches, have you considered water saving measures? Although we rarely suffer a lack of rain here, a few dry days mean needing to water the garden. Could you install a water butt? Leave out buckets and watering cans to catch the rain? 7 7 WELLBEING Mental Health Awareness this year focusses on stress. You can read all about it at: mental-health-awareness-week. Mental health issues affect many of us at some point in our lives, and can strike unexpectedly and debilitating. We owe a debt of gratitude to Malcolm Carr, who shares with us his recent experience. Mental Health, a personal Journey So... in October 2017 Maggie Peel sent me a Facebook clipping on ill judged perceptions of Mental Health as the basis for a possible article for Cathedral News. Given I have 40 years experience as a practising Mental Health Professional, not an inappropriate use of expertise. What Maggie didn t know at that point was that I had just crashed out of a contract as Head of Legal & Governance at an NHS Trust and had subsequently been diagnosed as suffering Clinical Depression. Reflective practice is now standard practice within medicine and healthcare so what have I learned in the last five months that I hadn t learned about Mental Health (and Depression in particular) in the previous 40 years? It s important to mention that while I do suffer from a mental health condition, I am not the spokesperson for everyone with a mental illness. Experiences vary for everyone. Firstly (incongruously writing this) no amount of describing where my head (and body) has been can convey what it felt like - perhaps I am just not articulate enough... but even suggesting I am not articulate enough is symptomatic of depression - I have reported directly (in writing and verbally) as chair of a national nursing organisation, to NHS Trust boards, HMO working parties and NGOs for several years. Yes, I can write this and yet I doubt that I can! I have learnt that I am guilty of stereotyping, ie I had a mental health problem and was ashamed. Discussing this with Ruth as I type I realised that if I worked as a physiotherapist and broke my leg, it would have been potted up and I would have walked into the Cathedral and joked about physician heal thyself, but I m a mental health nurse and can count on two hands the number of people I shared my struggle with. Lots of people have prayed for my physical health during this period, I didn t hesitate to share that I had Immune deficiency, Bell s Palsy, Vitamin deficiency and a jaw abscess to name a few. Next on my learning curve is physical health impact; I am not one for the doctors (I went so long between visits to the GP practice that all the doctors I knew had retired and left and I didn t

8 know who my doctor was) but in the last few months I have had more prescriptions than in the past 20 years. Tempting as it is to say otherwise, my physical health is symptomatic of my mental health and not mental health a symptom of physical health. And so to the most important learning point (and I should have known this or perhaps I did and just forgot it), Mental Health is as much a state of Health as is Physical Health. We can be in good health or poor health. To maintain our physical health, we think about diet and nutrition, exercise, sleep etc. I have led hours of training over the years pointing out that we often only think about our health when we are unwell... we don t (often) wake up and think I feel healthy today (unless perhaps we have had a period of ill health and really appreciate the difference). I have always been a glass half full person, to be in poor mental health with an empty glass was for me hell on earth. And so to Faith and the hell on earth that depression brought. I was for a period of time separated (in my head) from the love of God and yet I knew from conversations, phone calls, s, cards that he wasn t separated from me. The problem was (back to not being able to articulate how depression feels and what it does) I didn t feel worthy. This was not about not being worthy of God s love, it was about being worthy of anything there were days I felt guilty of WELLBEING breathing air that others may need more (its illogical but thinking disorders are). Despite dysfunctional thinking and no matter how low I felt, the small number of people who knew what was going on kept praying for me, sending scriptures and cards. What was key was that they were there and let me know they were there. They didn t burden me with telling me they knew how I felt (because even if they had been depressed it wasn t like me). They were just there. As I set out to write this piece, I wanted to write an article to open the door for discussion about the elephant in the room - but not to describe or say in which corner the elephant was hiding. The other thing that has struck me forcibly is that when I was struggling with faith, I never lost the ability to pray for others. It was about me not worth being healed when others needed it more. And so I think that s the point, we need to support and hold those suffering Mental Health problems in prayer. We need to tell them we are praying for them by name and that God hasn t given up, and we need to give them a safe space to share what they feel, with whom they want, and that will be by degree be different sharing with different people. I am still on a journey to health, I haven t yet woken up and thought I feel healthy today. I have learnt that even when I do the spectre of depression will never go and may return. I close by

9 leaving Maggie s original cut and paste and I am grateful for being able to share my journey with my community of faith and love. WELLBEING Cathedral Shop Is there anybody out there with retail experience or flair who would like to volunteer to manage the Shop? As you know, Sandra Howard leaves us at the end of July and we are looking for someone to take on the management of the shop. Sandra assures us it is not an onerous task! If you would like to know more please speak to Sandra, either on a Sunday morning or call the Cathedral Office on and she will be happy to talk to you and explain what is needed. The first port of call for help with mental health issues should probably be your GP. Malcolm says he also found the Citizens' Advice Bureau very helpful. At the Cathedral we offer prayer support through the Healing Prayer Circle. If you give permission, a summary is sent to members of the group. The contacts are Alex McLelland and Gill Overend, and you can contact them in person, via the clergy team or Cathedral Office. We also have a time for individual healing prayer during the 10.15am Sunday Eucharist on the third Sunday of each month. Trained members of the congregation will pray with anyone who wants to, either for themselves, or for someone else. Thy Kingdom Come Diocesan Beacon Event Bradford Cathedral Sunday 13 May 3pm to 6pm The Cathedral is hosting this year s event and we are looking for help with the refreshments - can you help please? We need two teams to serve drinks and cake from 3pm until 4pm and from 5pm and 6pm. We also need people to bake cakes. If you can help with either or both please speak to me, Sandra Howard. Please see page 18 for more details of the day s events.

10 MUSIC NEWS Reflections on 50 Years in the Choir When Alex Berry phoned to ask me to write an article for the Cathedral News, I pondered for a while on what to write about. It then occurred to me that it is exactly fifty years ago this month that I first took my place in the Cathedral choir stalls, so perhaps a few reflections are in order. These are somewhat random thoughts, but I hope they will be of interest. I also want to draw on my more recent experience as a council member of the Pilgrims Association, now renamed Cathedrals Plus. It was on Low Sunday, 1968, that I entered the choir stalls for the first time. Keith Rhodes auditioned me and persuaded me that I could sing alto! I stuck this out for a few years but was relieved when he agreed for me to sing bass. Of course, much water has flown under the bridge since then and I am certainly not at this point going to bring up past divisions. Suffice it to say that I was one of those that with Keith started up the Bradford Choristers at the beginning of the nineteen-eighties. After twenty years I felt that it was time to heal old wounds and I was able to persuade the Bradford Choristers rejoin the cathedral in I am very glad that we took this action and so pleased to see how things here have progressed since then. I now want to reflect on how life in the Cathedral music world has changed more generally during these fifty years. Standards generally have certainly improved greatly over this period and there are many more topquality choirs than there were then. Staffing has increased considerably - the Assistant Organist was very much part time and as often as not the Cathedral Organist would direct accompanied music from the organ loft during the week; Organ Scholars and Choral Scholars hardly existed outside Oxbridge. However, choir schools were more popular then, including the residential choir school. Of course, girls choirs didn t exist in those days, but we couldn t manage without them now. My only reservation when they were suggested was that the boys choirs would soon disappear, but this has gladly turned out to be unfounded and in most cases the boys and girls take an equal share of the work. My work over many years with the Pilgrims Association has taught me that, while all cathedrals do have much in common, they each have their own successes and their own problems. It is obvious that the former parish church cathedrals are in a different world to the original cathedral foundations but even among these, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, depending on such factors as location and their recent history. I see this from a close-up

11 point of view as, in addition to singing here, I do visitor officer duties at Wakefield Cathedral, where I also worship regularly. So how do things compare in Bradford Cathedral Choir between now and when I first joined? It was of course simpler in those days, only having boys and men to deal with, though there were two choirs, an A team and a B team. The standard was good, and we were one of very few parish church cathedral choirs that regularly broadcast Choral Evensong. The number of services was less but there were two Sunday Evensongs, a cathedral style one at four and a parish style one at 6.30pm (hence the two choirs). The Sunday Morning Eucharist was much as it is today and for a while we also sang Matins, but with chanted canticles. There was only one weekday Evensong, on a Wednesday. Despite this, the repertoire was varied but not as extensive as it is today. I believe that we do very well to do what we do now, bearing in mind that the boys and girls come from many schools. Recruiting is vital, and Alex did a MUSIC NEWS brilliant job recently when a Be a Chorister for a Day attracted around 80 boys and girls. It is also pleasing to see a good number of trebles staying on the back row when their voices break. Alex Berry doesn t have an easy job, but he is well supported and attendance on all sides is good. I look forward to what, at my age, will be the short remaining time in Bradford Cathedral Choir! I particularly look forward to the centenary of Bradford Diocese next year. I well remember the special services that took place in 1969! Malcolm Warburton If you are new to the Cathedral Welcome Please make yourself known to one of t h e C h u rc h w a rd e n s, A l e x o r Maggie. If you would like to join a Fellowship Group, find out more about the congregational life of the Cathedral, including social events, or if we can help in any way, please ask one of the stewards at the door, who will find us for you. We look forward to meeting you. Extended Membership Please remember in your prayers the following members of the Cathedral fellowship who, through illness or incapacity, cannot attend in person: Pat Baly Hazel Naylor Bill Pirie Joan Simpson Dorothy Walsh Heather Wright If anyone you know would appreciate being added to this list, please speak to one of the clergy or churchwardens, Alex McLelland or Maggie Peel.

12 CENTENARY 2019 Cathedral Centenary 2019 Plans are being formed to celebrate the Cathedral s centenary. It was on 25 November 1919 that King George V confirmed the creation of the Diocese of Bradford and the elevation of the parish church to cathedral. We re planning events under the four headings of Faith, Heritage, Music and the Arts, and Partnership. We launch the centenary year on 6 January when Bishop Nick will celebrate Choral Eucharist. He will also preside at Evensong and speak about a contemporary issue. Meanwhile an exhibition of a hundred pairs of Eva Mileusnic s porcelain feet, decorated with patterns typical of the countries immigrants have come to Bradford from, will start in the North Transept before walking their way around the ambulatory and the nave. In Lent John Pritchard will lead a Lent course and Louise Carr will display her textiles Stations of Lament alongside prayer stations around the Cathedral. John Rutter will lead an RSCM musical afternoon for singers from across West Yorkshire and the Diocese, and there will be an open day to celebrate the end of the HLF Bells project. In May we welcome Rowan Williams who will lead a discussion about the church in the city, and in the evening will give our Arts and Theology lecture based on his own poetry. Meanwhile, Dean Jerry will be walking his Dean s Pilgrimage between the three cathedrals, praying at churches along the way, and the full choir will be touring to Erfurt and Cologne. In June we will host a sumptuous Dean s Dinner for the people of Bradford, and the Revd David Ison will be our guest at our Patronal Festival. In the autumn comes the Heritage Open Day; a textiles and well-being project; an eco weekend; and exhibitions of ceramics and of textiles. Bishop Nick will return to speak about the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and we end the year at the actual centenary when the new kneelers, that the Friends diligent band of stitchers have been making, will be dedicated on Centenary Sunday 24 November. We are excited at the prospect of showcasing the Cathedral to the City, the Episcopal Area and the Diocese in this historic year, and of drawing people in to see and appreciate the wonder that is Bradford Cathedral.
