2 Two Centenaries This month we commemorate the 100th year since the end of World War One. The impact of visiting the Cemeteries in Northern France will stay with me for ever. The sheer immensity of them, the devastation to the geography of the area (farmers are still being maimed by grenades and bombs that go off when they plough their fields), the dreadful waste of human life and the politics of the time that drifted into such senseless slaughter. On top of this there is the shocking fact that it all happened again in Europe only twenty one years later. During the years of this Commemoration the story of nations and individuals has been well told. Learning from history is vital to live well in the present. Let us indeed remember so that we can always choose to be peacemakers. Please join us at the special moments on 4th November (Festival of Remembrance) and 11th November (Remembrance Sunday). 2 Two Centenaries In the year following the close of World War One, the Diocese of Bradford was born out of the ancient see of Ripon and the parish Cathedral of St Peter was created on 25th November 1919 by Royal decree. So, next year is our Centenary Year and very soon we shall be launching a Centenary Prayer and the programme for the first four months. We shall launch the Centenary year on Sunday 6th January, the Feast of the Epiphany, and Bishop Nick will be joining us. Big birthdays are a time for reflection, celebration and re-energising. We are aiming to do all that and much more next year. Please do keep a lookout for the programme and not only join in but invite others to come along as well. Dean Jerry

Could you please help? They need various items to help those in need, such as clean sleeping bags, towels, minitoiletries (those little ones you get in B&Bs and hotels), warm coats/clothing/footwear and new duvets. If you have any of these that you no longer need, please bring them to the Cathedral Office and we will pass them on to Inn Churches, which is staffed by volunteers, who offer a welcome and friendly face along with some of the comforts we just take for granted. 6 Contemplative Fire Wisdom on the Way Saturday November 10th for 10am start - finishing 3:30pm St Mark s Church, Broomfield Road, Broomhill, Sheffield S10 2SE Embodying Hope for the Climate A reflective day exploring climate change to help us move beyond paralysis towards hopeful action In the morning, we will explore how inhabiting the Christian story of creation, death and resurrection empowers us to face the challenge of climate disruption. Together we will imagine creative ways of responding. In the afternoon we will share a meditative walk in the Botanical Gardens, including some simple chants and body prayers together, awakening us to the beauty of creation. Please bring a packed lunch and suitable footwear / outdoor wear in case it is wet. Suggested donation for the day between 10 and 20 per person. 6

Once logged on to My ChurchSuite, having chosen your own unique password, you can amend and update the personal information which the Cathedral holds about you name, address, telephone etc. You can also view the Cathedral Calendar for forthcoming events (still in development). Sometimes events require signing up to and this can be done too. If you are on a rota, you can see and potentially amend when you are on duty. Refreshments for Carol Services in December Part of what we offer to visiting organisations, in December, is help with refreshments following Carol Services. Communion before Confirmation For more than 20 years the Church of England has permitted children, who have been baptised, to receive communion prior to being confirmed as an adult. This is something which can take place during a Sunday morning service. If you would like to know more, please speak to one of the clergy. Last month I shared with you Bradford Cathedral s Prayer - here is a Grace I offered before the Annual Dinner of the Bradford Organists Association. 11 Parcevall Hall 27/28 July 2019 Following my introduction on Sunday morning a few weeks ago can I remind you that we have booked a weekend away at Parcevall Hall again next year from 12noon on the Saturday until 4-00pm on the Sunday. It would be good if we could fill the hall this time so can I encourage you to think about coming along. (I already have some names). The Saturday afternoon will be a relaxing time with a number of fun activities, the evening will be an opportunity to get to know one another better with a social time. Sunday we will have someone to lead us in some thoughts relevant to our Cathedral life. The cost for the weekend is the same as this year ie. 89. I look forward to adding you to my list. To commemorate the millions who died in combat, and many more who died as a result of famine and disease, we should make the world better for all people. In 2015 all 193 members of the United Nations signed-up to a series of ambitious goals, to be achieved by 2030, to: End poverty and hunger Provide education, healthcare, water and sanitation Guarantee civil rights for all people Protect the environment and stop climate change. We use words from different faith traditions, we also pray in our own words aloud or silently. Red poppies to remember the soldiers who died in the wars since 1914, and white poppies to remember the civilians. White poppies can be obtained from The Peace Museum, 10 Piece Hall Yard, Bradford, BD1 1PJ The Sustainable Development Goals build on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals from 2000 to 2015, and aim to end all forms of poverty. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said: Sustainable development is the pathway to the future we want for us all. Our speaker on 11-Nov-2018 is Clive Wilson, author of: Designing the Purposeful World: The Sustainable Development Goals as a Blueprint for Humanity ISBN: The purpose for humanity is to thrive and live sustainably alongside other life forms. The UN s Sustainable Development Goals provide a vision not just for world leaders, but for us all. To achieve the goals by 2030 we must persuade governments to take action, and make changes in our own lives. 13

14 The Ephesus Community We would like to invite you to join the Ephesus Community, an intentional and open group committed to daily prayer for the growth of Bradford Cathedral. A prayer for Bradford Cathedral, Ephesus 3: For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever. Amen. Each member of the community prays each day at home at a time and way of their choice for growth: for personal spiritual growth of members of the Cathedral, for growth in relationships among us and for new people to join us and find Christ among and through us. We also suggest Ephesus community members pray the same for a local church and also a church somewhere else in the world, churches with which they have knowledge and links. Ephesus members may also like to join together to pray in pairs or small groups from time to time but this is not a requirement. We may also gather together as a larger group once or twice a year for mutual support and encouragement. Prayer topics will also be supplied on a regular basis. 15 Isaiah , a creative reading for children By Canon Mandy The magnificent lion with his fabulous mane stretched out his paws and said... Hmm I think it s dinner time again The lamb skipped and danced, hopped and pranced as she played amongst the flowers. Then she heard a sound that made her stop and tremble... The lion s tummy rumbled. The sensational spotted leopard scratched his ear and rubbed his tummy and said... Hmm I think it s dinner time The cow mooed and ate some food; yummy green grass for tea. Then she lifted her head and her eyes near popped out as she gazed at the spots in the trees. Then her knees knocked so hard that her milk turned to cheese! The Wiley wolf with his long pointed nose, picked up his ears as he heard tantalizing noise and said to himself... Hmm I think it s dinner time The kid kicked out his feet in a comical way as he leapt up in the air as he went on his way. With a howl and a woof he stopped his play and started to bleat and to quake. The big bear was so warm in his big woolly coat. But it didn t stop his big tummy rumble so he sharpened his claws, then started to prowl as he growled to himself... Hmm I think it s dinner time The ox did a dance as he gazed at his straw. His tail swished for joy as he ate of his fill. Then all of a sudden came the growl of a bear; vicious and violent and not vegetarian. The aspiring asp with her long silver body silently slithered and slid. 15

16 Then all of a sudden with a twist of her coil she spotted a youngling and hissed... Hmm I think it s dinner time So the lamb and the cow, and the kid and the ox all quivered and shook as they feared for the lives. And the lion and leopard, the snake, wolf and bear all gathered together to chase and to kill. Then all of a sudden a word came to pass. A word like no other; That none could surpass. It spoke of the future. It spoke of a time. It spoke of a new life where all would be fine. It spoke of a baby. It spoke of a child. It spoke about new life where all would be fine. It spoke about peace It spoke about wisdom It spoke about new life where all would be fine It spoke about hope It spoke about faith It spoke about new life where all would be fine So the animals stopped and thought for a while. The lion and leopard, the snake, wolf and bear all gathered together, almost in despair, they looked at their paws as they stared at the ground, they shuffled and muttered unsure what to do. Then magnificent lion with his fabulous mane lifted his head and spoke once again A holy mountain you say? Full of peace for us beasts? The lamb and the cow, and the kid and the ox all quivered and shook as they feared for the lives all waited to hear their redeemer was near. 16

Then leopard and snake, and the wolf and the bear all joined in the game. As the cow mooed and the kid kicked in a comical way and the ox did his dance as he looked at his hay. Then along came a child and joined in the game. They played and they laughed until they were spent, then all fell asleep safe and secure full of sweet dreams on God s holy mountain. 17

This was really fun: I d recommend it Went to see the HMS Victory It was amazing We visited some colleges in Oxford where Harry Potter was filmed and it was really exciting We sang The Lord is my Shepherd in the service at Wimborne Lovely food! Lovely places too! So exciting and fun! When we went it was a looong jouney but it was still fun (very) Portsmouth Cathedral was AMAZING Portsmouth Cathedral had been refurbished and that was nice The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford was really interesting I love seeing the colourful houses in Oxford From the 21st Century ferry and onto the 15th Century HMS Victory 19

21 Is this for you? Confirmation sessions start in February 2019 If you are interested in being confirmed, fancy joining a group to as a refresher or would like to help facilitate, then this is for. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers Q. What is the right age for confirmation? 21

22 There is no right age for a person to be confirmed. Anyone may be confirmed who has been baptized, if they are old enough to answer responsibly for themselves. As a general rule anyone who is over 10 years old and can answer for themselves could be ready for confirmation but the right time for you might be at any age. Q. How can I tell if I am ready for confirmation? A. Young people mature in their faith in different ways and at different ages. It is important that you come to Confirmation with firm personal conviction that it is right for you at this point in your life. You should pray about this and ask others in your church to pray for you. You should talk to your vicar and even if you are unsure about being confirmed you may wish to participate in the confirmation course to explore your faith further as you think about it. Q. I was baptized as a child, why do I need to be confirmed? If you were baptized as a child, in confirmation, you are confirming the promises your parents made on your behalf at your baptism about your commitment to a journey of faith. In confirming this faith you are becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family. In turn the Church will promise to support and pray for you. In confirmation we recall the promises made at baptism, we are thanking God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledging his love. We are acknowledging that we all need to turn away from selfishness and evil and to accept God's offer of a new start. 22

23 Q. What if I wasn't baptized as a child? If you were not baptized as a child and want to make a commitment of faith, you might consider adult baptism or you can be baptized and confirmed in the same service or baptized shortly before your confirmation. Q. What does it cost? A. A confirmation service is free. Q. What happens during confirmation classes? A. The purpose of confirmation preparation is to ensure that those who are confirmed have a proper understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Christ within the life of the Church of England. In The Book of Common Prayer it is envisaged that this preparation will take the form of learning by heart the Apostles Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and The Book of Common Prayer Catechism. Today preparation focuses less on learning by rote and more on enabling young people to live a life of committed discipleship in a world of multimedia and globalised culture. Sessions encourage candidates to grow in their Christian faith through prayer, reflection, studying the Bible, participating actively in the life of the church and demonstrating their faith in their communities. 24 Everyone is welcome to pop in for a chat and a drink and cake. 3pm till 4.30pm every Wednesday Places of Welcome is a network of small community organisations, including faith communities, who offer an unconditional welcome to local people for at least a few hours a week. The primary aim of the Places of Welcome network is that Every neighbourhood has places where all people feel safe to belong, connect and contribute. We are looking for volunteers to help with hospitality and to welcome people to the Cathedral. There are board games available for those who want a game of chess or draughts. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know new people and extend the hand of friendship. 25 Bell ringing at the Cathedral We have one of the great peals of 12 bells in the country. These were cast and installed by Taylor s of Loughborough as War Memorial Bells, if you would like more details there are a number of interesting items on show in the Heritage Exhibition in the Cathedral. Although we have 12 bells we do not have 12 ringers. I have been trying to find some of the many people who have in previous years learned how to handle a bell using the full circle technique to assist us to ring on Armistice Day 11 November. However we still need more ringers. We are always looking for new learners and are pleased to show people what is required. Basically anyone who can climb the 55 steps will be welcome to visit us and see what is involved. What is required? A ringer has to stand to pull the rope, hand eye coordination is an advantage as is a sense of rhythm. Musical skills are not necessary. 26 LET S TALK ABOUT FAIRTRADE Bradford Cathedral has had Fairtrade status for many years now. We use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar in our catering, we have a Traidcraft stall every Sunday morning, we talk about and encourage folk to choose Fairtrade products in their shopping WHY? Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives. 26

In September, Traidcraft announced that, unless a solution can be found in the next month, it would cease trading by the end of this year. The Traidcraft Board attributes its financial difficulties to the fall of the pound after the Brexit referendum and austerity, as well as a disappointing relaunch of its online shop.writing in the Church Times, Traidcraft s Chief Executive is appealing to the Archbishops to say that trade justice is part of the mission of the Gospel, and here is an organisation that is raised on Christian principles that we can support not out of charity but because it is the right thing to do. Traidcraft has now received hundreds of messages of support from shareholders, customers, Fair Traders, staff, suppliers, producers and others. As a result of this support and ideas that have been put forward, Traidcraft is investigating a proposal, which would mean it is downsized but transformed into a fair business of tomorrow. It would build on its pioneering roots, changing the world in ethical ways, which mean the most to modern citizens. If the proposal is accepted, Traidcraft will continue to operate and we would be able to continue to shop with them. 27

28 What can we do? Continue to demonstrate our support by buying from our stall on a Sunday morning. We can buy Christmas presents by shopping online at We can also purchase a wide range of Traidcraft goods, including gifts, at the Oxfam shops in Ilkley and Otley. With simple shopping choices you can ensure: A fair wage for producers Equality for women Benefits for the wholemcommunity. Care for the environment This means that the farmers and producers can make their own decisions, control their future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves. With Fairtrade we all have the power to change the world every day Abigail Housing Christmas appeal Abigail Housing is one of the Cathedral's mission partners, and houses destitution asylum seekers in Bradford while they submit their claim for asylum in the UK. Two of the houses are donated by Christian families for a peppercorn rent and one is an unused diocesan vicarage not far from the Cathedral. This year calendars and Christmas cards will be available to purchase. Calendars will be 10 each, which will go towards Abigail's organisational costs, and Christmas cards will be 5 for two, which will buy Christmas gifts for our residents. Maggie Peel will be selling these at the cathedral from 18th November and thanks you in advance for your continuing support. 28

30 TREE PLANTING AT GAISBY LANE NEAR FRIZINGHALL STATION 10 am to 3 pm on SATURDAY 1 st December 2018 Use train or park on Gaisby Lane. BD18 Grid ref: SE The Dean of Bradford Cathedral, Very Rev. Jerry Lepine, will join us for tree planting at the site off Gaisby Lane, as will other community groups and schools. There is space for around 600 trees in some very good soil where most of the trees planted last autumn have survived through our long dry summer. This woodland is being created according to the Tree Charter and is made up of indigenous broadleaf species such as oak, birch, hazel, holly, hawthorn, blackthorn, crab apple, rowan, lime and walnut. Come and join us creating a living, growing area of beauty out of a wilderness of neglect and industrial spoiling. In doing that you will also pay back some of your own carbon debt. The ground is fairly rough so strong shoes or boots with suitable clothing would be needed. Spades will be provided but bring your own if you can. Contact: Mike de Villiers
