1 NEWS & NOTES FEBRUARY 2012 LISTENING LENT A Yurt will be located in the North Transept during Lent. This is an initiative between Touchstone and the Cathedral to develop our mission in the district and work collaboratively with other people and organisations. We are currently planning a series of speakers, craft workshops and bible study groups for the six weeks based on the theme of Listening Lent to ourselves, to our world, and to God. Over the six weeks a wide range of events are planned - hopefully all in the Yurt*. Traditionally a Yurt is a portable wood-framed dwelling, covered by layers of fabric and sheep's wool for insulation and weatherproofing, and used by Turkic nomads of Central Asia. Please rest assured that this Yurt is not covered in smelly sheep or goat skins! LISTENING BETTER Saturdays 10th, 17th, 24th February & 31st March The next course in basic listening skills, run in conjunction with Touchstone, will run in the Cathedral from 10.00am until 12.30pm on all four Saturdays in February/March. 3 EVENTS IN THE CATHEDRAL IN FEBRUARY Wednesday 8th February WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIME ORGAN RECITAL The Spring season begins with Professor Ian Tracey from Liverpool. Recitals start at 1.05pm preceded by a light buffet lunch at 12.30pm. All welcome. Free entry with retiring collection. Buffet lunch 3 minimum donation. Wednesday 15th February WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIME ORGAN RECITAL The recitalist this week is our own Paul Bowen who will be playing an all Bach programme. Monday 20th February until 5th May An Artspace Event STATIONS OF THE CROSS BY IAIN MCKILLOP Iain is a painter working mainly in the field of Christian religious art. He also produces paintings of architectural history and related subjects and has exhibited in many cathedrals and churches throughout the country. Tuesday 22nd February following Choral Evensong PANCAKE PARTY AND TALENT SHOW! The annual Pancake Party this year will feature a talent show put on by our young people. Tickets will be available shortly. 4 ECO-CONGREGATION Eco-congregation is an ecumenical programme helping churches make the link between environmental issues and Christian faith, and respond in practical action in the church, in the lives of individuals, and in the local and global community please look at our award in the North Porch. Our own Eco Group continually seek to improve and find news ways we can affirm good practice in our stewardship and witness the importance of caring for God s creation. The largest project, since being awarded Eco-congregation status, has been the installation of the photovoltaic (PV) cells on the roof which continue to both save us and earn us money, and also reduce our carbon footprint. The first project for this year is to look at what we do with our waste. In addition to the items we already recycle we have been looking at the emotive issue of polystyrene cups. We have spent a long time discussing the pros and cons of these and would like to offer the china crockery at every opportunity as being a far nicer option for our guests. We do appreciate that we sometimes will need to use the polystyrene alternative but they will now be taken to a recycling centre rather than just thrown away as in the past. For those of you who help with our catering, please continue to put the cups (not the holders or anything else) into a black bin liner and they will be removed by the verger team. We have had compost bins for some while which have mainly been used by the Close homes. In future, we would ask that everyone who uses the kitchen puts teabags and coffee dregs (with the filter paper) into the small bin provided and these will be composted. Finally, may we thank everyone for their support for all our endeavours, including the Fairtrade stall, and to look out for our next project! The Real Easter Egg After last year s success we are once again going to stock the Real Easter Egg, a Fairtrade egg with a bible quote on it. This year they are more child-friendly, with pictures on the box and an 8-page Easter story book inside. Reduce your Carbon Footprint in Lent! Tearfund continues its yearly Carbon Fast this Lent, with practical daily actions to help us reduce our impact on the environment. 5 Hello Friends YOUTH GROUP and BOYS BRIGADE Having been here for six months now, I want to start by saying how welcome (back for me) my wife and I feel. It s an exciting time for the young people, both N-Gage (the youth group) and Boys Brigade have seen some growth. N-Gage are putting on a variety show for the Shrove Tuesday social to raise funds for equipment which BB will also be involved in. N-Gage is also preparing to start working through a confirmation course. Boys Brigade has had three new boys start during the autumn term which is encouraging, and we are just starting to get down to some serious badge work in order for the boys grow and develop as young Christian men. I am thoroughly enjoying my work with the young people of the Cathedral and hope it will continue and blossom as the year continues. God Bless, Joshua Carr HELP STAMP OUT LEPROSY UPDATE! The Leprosy Mission's new slogan is aimed to encourage people to trim commemorative and foreign stamps from letters and recycle them to raise funds - to help eradicate leprosy and care for sufferers. The Leprosy Mission raised 83,000 in 2011 through its philatelic wing. We have a little box (decorated with stamps) on the shelves at the back of the South Aisle as our receptacle. Please save only the less common stamps and trim them with about 5mm around, or soak them off, or rescue collections which the owner no longer wants! (Please note we have now lost our outlet for everyday 1st and 2nd class stamps). Also, all postcards used or unused, are sold in aid of our link diocese in Khartoum to buy basics for their work in the church and community. Over 7000 was sent last year. Please leave postcards in the letter rack or Cathedral Office. Thank you for donating 201 pairs of glasses in the last two years!! The box for your old spectacles is alongside the stamps box. Glasses, with or without cases, are needed in the Third World countries where little healthcare provision is available. Thank you. Jane Tarver MEDICINES Unopened and well in-date tablets, creams and vitamins can now be sent to benefit people in Africa - where healthcare is minimal - via Intercare ( or see Jane Tarver who can take them to her local collecting point. Look out for the Intercare facility at your local chemist or doctors.

The cost will be just 50p per child per morning. If you know of anyone who would like to come, please do advertise it. Claire Corley has flyers if you wish to hand some out. Also, if you have any good quality toys that we could make use of, please speak to Claire, or the Cathedral Office. CHILDREN S WORK AT THE CATHEDRAL We are now doing regular children's work each Sunday morning and would very much like to grow our team. In particular, we need people who would either assist with activities (helping to set up, tidy up, chatting to parents and children), or people who would be willing to take responsibility for providing the snack and drink for children and parents. 7 CATHEDRAL CHOIR We have opportunities for boys (Year 3 upwards) and girls (Year 6 upwards) who show musical potential, interest and enthusiasm. We would also like to hear from adults with good, flexible voices and strong sight-reading ability. The choirs play an integral part in the life of the Cathedral, providing regular choral worship throughout the year. They are lively, enthusiastic and friendly groups which foster a great sense of teamwork. Choristers benefit from a free, first-rate musical education as well as making great friendships and enjoying a vibrant social calendar. The Abigail Project is a Bradford-based charity dedicated to providing housing to people made homeless at the end of the asylum process.
