1 of St. Paul s United Church of Christ, Village of Attica Kids These Days! We hear so many bad things about kids these days. They do things that we didn t do back in the day. But maybe, just maybe, the things we hear about kids these days tell more about the adults saying them, than they do about the youth themselves. Each generation has its own personality, so of course kids these days are going to have different ideas about life than earlier generations. The fact that no one (both men and women) wears a hat to church anymore shows us just how much we have changed over the last fifty years. So, to be fair, each generation has its strengths and weaknesses. One of the biggest complaints is that kids these days feel so entitled. But maybe, just maybe, some of the blame goes to the Greatest Generation who determined that their children should have more opportunities to succeed than they did. So, they built new schools, started clubs, and organized sports teams. With several consecutive generations working to improve these conditions, it s no wonder that kids these days feel so entitled! We have put them first seemingly forever! The good news is that children these days have more educational opportunities. They learn to be leaders and to work well as part of a team. They are comfortable with new technology. They tend to be more inclusive of differences. They can become involved in many different clubs and teams. This helps them become more well-rounded and confident as adults. Each generation is different. That which is considered to be a strength now, may be seen as a weakness a few generations from now. And a weakness now, may result in a litany of future assets. If we look only for what is bad, that is what we ll find. If we are determined to look for good, that s what we ll find. Good and bad exist together. It is our choices that make the difference. And what we choose to see, often says more about us than about what we re seeing. What follows is a recent Facebook entry from a cousin. She has three children. The oldest is Hannah. The twins are Daniel and Olivia. A great day for my three runners! They ran the Faith Academy Great Pumpkin 5k. Daniel ran his best time of the season and qualified for Nationals. He was third place overall male and actually beat Hannah, which is a first. Hannah was first place overall female. Olivia ran her best time of the season (and her first 5k). But the best part of the morning was that the entire cross country team, after they had all completed the race, ran back to where Olivia was and ran the last 1/4 mile with her to encourage her to finish strong. If you never thought of cross country as a team sport, think again. These kids encourage and support one another more than I've seen in any other sport. It's a great group of kids with awesome coaches. Kids these days! They re absolutely amazing!

10 From the Church Historians Do you remember Sew and Do? At Wednesday Bible Study a couple of weeks ago the conversation turned to squash, squash one eats! It s most interesting the subjects that are discussed at Bible Study. That David W. & Dorothy K., and most of the people around the table are involved in the Annual Squash Party, it was a natural. Floss entered the conversation by saying, we didn t always have a squash party, Sew & Do used to make it. Who? There was a group or senior women; Alta Bertsch, Helen Ripstein, Mildred Ripstein, Elsie Herman, Florence Martle, Helen Dumke, Leita Bey, Helen Meisner, Mable Knoosdorf, and Evelyn Bey...there were others, but memory fails us. They met on a Tues. once a month and sewed bed pads (before the days of Chux), made with sheets of plastic, newspaper and pieces of bed sheets sewed together. The finished bed pads were given to Bernice Mandeville who took them to Odd Fellows & Rebekah s home in Lockport. There faithful ladies were a mission oriented group. They made bandages our of discarded sheets that were sent to Church World Services. There were other mission projects they were part of, and they prepared the squash for the Sauerkraut Supper! And a footnote: the SS did always have squash on the menu. One year Floyd Macomber had an abundance of squash and offered it for the SS it received rave reviews and squash has been a menu item ever since! Here s to Sew and Do, to Mission and Squash! Your Church Historians, Floss & Charles St. Paul s Pre-school is hosting an UsBorne Book Fair with Gwen Wrotniak Mon., Nov. 13th, am 3pm In the small room in the education wing.
