1 No. 9 8 January 2015 Dear Parents/Carers, Reflecting We would expect to hear about the baptism of Jesus in Sunday s Gospel, wouldn t we? Well, we do. The Gospel is about Jesus being baptized by John in the Jordan. The account says that after Jesus comes up out of the water, the heavens are torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descends upon him and a voice from heaven says, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. So there it is: This is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and Gospel is about the baptism of the Lord. But the baptism of Jesus is toward the end of Sunday s Gospel. The first part of the Gospel tells of John s proclamation about someone coming who is far greater, mightier, than he. John says that he is not worthy even to bend down and loosen the straps of that person s sandals. He insists that his baptism is with water, but that this person who is to come will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. We don t want to miss this important part of Sunday s Gospel because it tells us who we are as baptized Christians. The word baptize comes from a Greek word that means plunge or immerse. In receiving Jesus as the Savior of the whole world- as we talked about last week when we celebrated the Epiphany- we are plunged or immersed into a life that is guided by the Holy Spirit. On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we renew our own baptismal promises. We reject Satan and sin, and we profess faith in Jesus Christ. I wish everyone a wonderful New Year as we enter I would like to take this opportunity to thank those people who wished my mother the best over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, her health has not improved, and we are monitoring it. Admissions We are beginning the admission process for the school year. If you know of anyone looking for a new school, please let them know to visit All Souls and complete an online admission form. In the event a family is not returning to all Souls, please notice the office by info@ssfallsoulsschool.org At the moment we are accepting applications for all grades even though there are some waiting lists for certain grades. Open House Catholic Schools Week I invite everyone to see their child s or children s work on Sunday, January 25 th. We begin Catholic Schools Week with a school Mass at 9am in the church followed by Open House in the school. All classrooms will have work to be viewed, and the Science Fair will be occurring in the cafeteria. End of Semester Finances The end of semester is on Wednesday, January 21 st. As per the family agreement, all finances need to be up-to-date by January 21 st ; otherwise students will not be able to start the second semester. Mrs. Reidy has informed those parents if there are any outstanding accounts. Please refer to the family agreement for conditions of enrollment to the school. Crab Feed January 31st I would encourage everyone to sign up for the Athletic Board s Crab Feed. It is a wonderful night of unlimited crab, drink, and dancing. If you do not sell your tickets, you will be billed for the $50.00 after the drawing of the raffle. There are prizes for those students who sell the most tickets. If you need extra tickets they can be obtained from the school office. The raffle tickets are due January 30 th, so make sure you get them sold. If you'd like more, please ask the office. Congratulations Congratulations to our students who have started off on a fine note with the basketball season. Keep up the good work players! Thanks to our coaches for all the hard work you do with the students. Go Wildcats!! Spirit Week Spirit Week coincides with Catholic Schools Week. The schedule of events will be in the next newsletter. Thank You On behalf of the staff and myself, I wish to thank all those students and families who gave us gifts at Christmas time. Your thoughtfulness was very much appreciated during the holiday time of year. SLEs Congratulations to the following students who have received recognition during the last weeks of Keep up the good work! Active Christians: Harley Alfonso and Nico Navarro, gr. 3; Kendrick Gelasio, gr. 5 Confident Communicators: Eric Camillo, gr. 5 Fully Integrated Individual: Matthew Cruz, gr. 6 Responsible Citizens: Julian Alvarado, gr. 6; Adriana Juricic, Elijah Odocayen-Cruz, and Vincent Peña, gr. 7 Virtue of the Month Self control is the ability to control one s emotions and behavior. In 2 nd grade, students have discussed how this can be difficult when faced with temptations. Some of the temptations that were talked about: dealing with anger, saying mean things to one another, spreading rumors, talking about someone behind their back, and not taking responsibility (such as goofing around in class, talking in class, not completing work). Students will be practicing a technique Stop. Think. And Act. to achieve self control in the classroom and on the playground. Pennies for Patients Student Council is raising awareness about leukaemia and lymphoma through the Pennies for Patients program. We will be passing boxes out to each student in hopes that they can fill them with coins. We ask that students bring the boxes by January 20 th. Thank you for helping us raise awareness and helping others find a cure for leukaemia and lymphoma. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts HOW ABOUT A BOGO (buy one get one free) CARD at KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS!
