FROM THE HEART AND MIND OF FATHER ROB... As mentioned in recent letters from Father Rob, his greatest desire is that we see mass as he sees it and he would like to help us to do so. For the next few weeks, Father Rob will have an article in The Link explaining an element of mass. We hope these prove to be meaningful to you. The Institution Narrative At the Last Supper, Jesus said, This is my Body, this is my Blood Do this in remembrance of me. With these words Jesus instituted the Eucharist as the means by which he wished to make his saving Sacrifice on the Cross present to future generations of Christians. In addition, he instituted the apostles as the priests who would offer the Sacrifice. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul tells us that he received these words from the Lord, On the night he was handed over, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 13 Thus Paul, too, was instituted as a priest of the new covenant. With these words the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. The priest recognizes Jesus by genuflecting or making a profound bow after these words. In our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, we too, acknowledge Christ s unique presence by kneeling before Him at that point in the liturgy. The institution narrative recounts four actions. He took the bread, blessed it giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to others. Henri Nouwen, a contemporary author, wrote a book, Life of the Beloved. 14 In the book he sees these four actions as a framework for the whole of Christian life. First we are taken or chosen. In baptism, God sets us apart for his mission and invites us to enter his covenantal love. We are blessed. God assures us that we are precious and priceless in his sight. Even to the point that he has given his life for us. He enhances our particular talents with gifts of faith, hope, and love. We are broken, but always blessed. We don t completely keep our baptismal promises and fully realize our baptismal dignity. Often events in our lives hurt us deeply. But God is with us, healing us, affirming his love and forgiveness. Finally, we are given. Finding courage in Christ to accept ourselves with our blessings and our brokenness, we give ourselves in love. We share in others brokenness and become instruments of Christ s healing. The institution narrative is at the heart of the Mass and the heart of Christian life. In it we hear the words of Jesus heart, beating with love and desire, for us and for the world. During the words of institution our gifts of bread and wine, which represent our whole selves, are taken, blessed, broken, and given as Jesus flesh for the life of the world Corinthians 11: Nouwen, Henri.
