3 A Message From Our Pastor Dear People of St. Patrick, Jesus was born without original sin, the sin of Adam and Eve. There was no need for Jesus to be baptized by John the Baptist, he was not in need of repentance from sin. Then, why did Jesus go to John to be baptized? Even John the Baptist said, I need to be baptized by you, and yet you are coming to me? From the baptism of Jesus, he will begin his public ministry and begin the journey that will lead to Good Friday and his death and then his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. The spirit of God the Father descending like a dove and coming upon him and the voice from heaven saying, This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased. This confirmed for Jesus his role and ministry, the love of God the Father for him and the support he would need in his ministry during the next three years. Today, we should think about the day of our baptism, as a baby or as an adult. That day, original sin was washed away and if we were an adult or over the age of seven years, every sin we had committed was washed away. We became a child of God, free from all sin, given a promise that if we would love God and our neighbor, in death we could be with God forever in heaven. God promised us his unconditional love, mercy, forgiveness and help along our journey in life. Do you know where you were baptized? Do you know when your were baptized? Do you know who your primary godparents or sponsors were? Do you know that the church of your baptism maintains your First Communion, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Marriage records in your baptismal book at that church? On the day of our baptism, we entered into a life with Christ. He washed away all sins and offered us the gift of Reconciliation to take away our sins in Confession after that day of Baptism. As a baptized Catholic, we are given all the privileges of the Catholic Church as well as the responsibilities that go with it. Example - Being Confirmed, making First Communion and especially, being married in the Catholic Church by a Catholic priest or deacon. Today, let us thank God for the day of our Baptism, make sure we are living our baptismal promise and being proud to say I am a Baptized, Practicing Catholic. God Bless, Fr. Larry Young Pastor

6 On the Day of our Baptism the following Prayers were said for Us! The Priest anointed us with the oil of catechumens and prayed, We anoint you with the oil of Salvation in the Name of Christ our Savior; may he st eng hen you with his power, who lives and reig s for ever and ever, Amen. The Priest asked our parents and godparents aſter the Profession of Faith: Is it your will that {Name} should be baptized in the faith of the Church, which we have professed with you? Answer: It is! The Priest poured water over our head or dunked us in a pool of water and said, {Name}, I baptize you in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Priest anointed us with the Sacred Chrism saying, God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has eed you om sin, given you a new bir h by water and the Holy Spirit, and welcomed you into his holy people. He now anoints you with the Chrism of Salvation as Christ was anointed priest, prophet and king, so you may live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life, Amen. We were clothed in white gar ent indicating we have put on Christ. At our f neral Mass a white cloth will cover our casket as a reminder that in baptism we put on Christ. A Candle was lit om the Paschal Candle and the Priest said, Receive the light of Christ. A Paschal Candle will be at head the head of our casket for our f neral Mass at the Church. Celebrate our Baptism Today and ever day of our lives.
