Box 2316, Castle Rock, CO St. Francis of Assisi Church, Castle Rock, CO Grand Knight s Corner by Cal Weatherly Brother Knights, A continued thank you to all of you for doing what you do! This past month has seen a number of activities which our council supported and led. A special thank you to all of the Knights and their wives for their support of the High School Youth Group s Casino Night Fundraiser. It was well attended, and a lot of fun as you will see by the pics we took. Thank you for helping our youth carry on their mission tradition in Utah this summer! Also, a big thank you to Bart Keller for arranging the Road Ranger cleanup crew. Apparently hard work literally does pay! I m sure the possibility of finding some extra cash will make this the best attended volunteer activity in coming months. Thanks to Dean and the guys for cooking for the parish breakfast. We had a good turnout to support the cooking, serving, and cleanup, and what better meal than breakfast to make sure everyone is well fed and ready for their day? I do have a few reminders for you all of some important events coming up. Also look at the activities section later in the newsletter, and at the calendar on the website for all event information. - Fifth Sunday Rosary. Thanks to the brother Knights who distributed rosaries after Masses on May 22. Make sure to attend the family rosary after the 11:30 Mass, and stay to help cook burgers and dogs. - Fair Signup Fred has sent out the sign up genius for the DC Fair Concessions. Please sign up for as many shifts as you can do. As we need as many people, both Knights and wives as we can get to fill all the slots and ensure the fair concessions go as well as they have gone in prior years. Lastly, there are two special prayer requests I d like to ask you to make. Keep Worthy Deputy Grand Knight Dean Rushing and his family in your prayers as Dean recovers from heart surgery. Recover quickly and get well soon Dean! Also please keep Margaret McCann in your prayers as she has been in the hospital for an illness. We pray for Margaret to have a quick and full recovery. THE CATHOLIC BENEFITS ASSOCIATION (CBA), located in Castle Rock, Colorado, is searching for an Executive Assistant to its CEO. The CBA supports Catholic organizations in the provision of healthcare benefits that are consistent with Catholic teachings about the sanctity of life. The successful candidate must be a practicing Catholic with some knowledge of Catholic teachings related to life issues. He or she must also have at least 4 years of experience in secretarial or administrative support positions. The hiring range for the position is between $40K and $44K per year. 5 St. Francis Men s Ministry Lecturer s Section Remember Dom Cingoranelli s report from Matthew Kelley s book The Seven Big Myths About the Catholic Church? As most of you will have seen in the weekly bulletin, there is an active Men s Ministry here at St. Francis. The theme of the ministry is Men Strive to be Saints, and it s mission is to help men of every generation to strive harder to know Jesus, learn about his mission and teachings, and understand how we are all called daily to accept the Grace of The Holy Spirit in our lives. By doing so we will become better versions of ourselves, and by learning how to give control to Christ, we will actually be empowered by The Holy Spirit to become better husbands, parents, children, siblings, workers, and every other role we play in the world today. The Four Goals of life are the Four Levels of happiness. 1) The Body 2) Competitive Advantage 3) Loving & Serving Others 4) Loving & Serving God As you can see the happiness achieved through the first and second levels will be short lived once attained, and must be continually increased to achieve more and more happiness which isn t possible. Happiness achieved through serving others will continue to grow as will the happiness we obtain from serving and doing God s work. Remember to always strive to continue to do God s work.. We meet weekly at 6:00 am on Friday s in Assisi Hall. There is a half hour video presentation followed by 20 minutes of small group table talk. We break just in time for 7:00 am Mass or to go about the rest of your Friday. We d love to see every Knight participate. All are welcome! 7 Minutes of General Council 8909 Meeting April 27, 2016 General Meeting called to order by DGK, Dean Rushing at 7:01 PM. Roll Call, absent officers: Chaplain, Grand Knight (excused), Chancellor, Financial Secretary (excused), Treasurer (excused), Warden (excused) and Trustee 3 rd year (excused). March Meeting Minutes were approved as published. Applications and Admissions No new membership applications. Grand Knight Report DGK, Dean Rushing reported that, after a 3 rd Dues Notice, we have 61 members that have not paid their dues. The Council gave SFA Parish a check for $500 to facilitate the AHG/Boy Scouts charter (sponsorship) move to the Parish. This will offset the cost of training and background checks of adult advisors. The plan is to add $500 to next year s budget for approval of the Council. Kevin Zink reported on the successful launch of the website and suggested a small publishing committee to determine the implementation of ideas for the website. The next steps will be to pay dues and facilitate event sign ups via the website. Bart Keller reported that the highway cleanup work went well with 7-8 Knights completing the work. The next cleanup project will be in late summer or early fall. The GK,DGK,FS and Andy Robinson met with Jonna Pemberton to review DC Fair logistics. The first Saturday & Sunday have been added to the schedule for the trailer and Kirk Hall, so Fred Aesquivel will add these days to the sign up schedule. Next year, the parade will be moved to the first weekend of the Fair, so we should notify the Rubino family of the possible conflict with Reece s Roundup. The Trustees approved the lease agreement with the Parish. It is a standard lease agreement with a cost of $1.00 per year. Casino Night was a great success and the Youth Group raised substantial funds to support their summer work camp in Montezuma Springs, Arizona. Treasurers Report No Report. New/Upcoming Business Todd Chwialkowski asked for a vote to accept the rules for the Scholarship program, including the proposed change to award 4 - $1,000 scholarships. The Council voted to accept the program as outlined. Don Deyoe gave a short description of the Recorder job responsibilities and asked for a volunteer to perform the Recorder duties in the upcoming Council year (term). Jason Faylor will coordinate our participation in Reece s Roundup this coming July (July 30 th ). He urged the members to help the Rubino family to secure sponsors and/or to be sponsors of the event. He will flyers to announce the event and asked that we circulate them to gain publicity. We will need to turn out about 25 Knights on the morning of the event to help set up tents (pop ups) and conduct the 5K run. Steve Gottula presented information about a program on the Shroud of Turin that has been presented by Dr. John Jackson at St. Jude Parish to good reviews. Steve asked that the Council consider sponsoring this 3 day program at a cost of $1500 and that the program be conducted next year just before Easter Week. The proposal was taken under advisement, but was not voted on at this time. Dom Cingoranelli reviewed the 5 th Sunday Rosary event which will take place on May 29, 2016 after the 11:30am Mass in Our Lady of Guadalupe Garden. This will be a continuing program with four 5 th Sundays in Dean reported for Rob Kidd that the Bean Bag Tournament will be held in one of the city parks or possibly at the MAC Center. We will grill hot dogs for this event. We still need 2 coordinators for the ten days of the DC Fair. Shift sign ups to work the Fair venues will go out via during the 1 st week of May. We will vote on the Slate of Officers at the May Meeting. Currently, the slate of Officers includes: Chaplain- Deacon Jake Shafer, WGK Cal Weatherly, DGK- Dean Rushing, Chancellor Fred Aesquivel or Lynn Churchill, Recorder need candidate, FS Alex Onda (do not have to vote), Treasurer Matt Alderman, Lecturer Dom Cingoranelli, Advocate Rick Dinkel, Warden Robert Kidd, Inside Guard Mick Harper, Outside Guard need candidate, Trustees John Hayes, Todd Chwialkowski, Matt Basalla. Need a big turnout for the Ordination of Deacon Pete McCann at Ave Maria on 6/18/16 at 10 AM. Mark your calendar for this event and plan to attend. The hike to help homeless vets will be on May 28 th starting at 8am at the Events Center. See Dean Rushing for the website to sign up. Sign up to help with the Pancake Breakfast on May 1 st (next Sunday). Wear blue shirts next Sunday and pitch in to help (cleanup crew is especially needed). Dick Harding proposed that the Knights sponsor a Golf Tournament next year as a fund raiser. Dick was asked to research the details and present a plan for consideration.dgk reminded us to take pictures of equipment before and after its use to document that we left the equipment in clean and operating condition. Mick Harper reminded us that the Special Olympics are coming up on August 6, 2016 and to mark our calendars to help out. We are Bronze Sponsors of this event. 4th Degree Report No Report. Field Agent Report No Report. District Deputy Report No Report. Lecturer The topic for us today is from the book The Seven Big Myths about the Catholic Church. The 4 levels of happiness (4 goals) are described in terms of The Body, Competition, Serving People and Serving God. Happiness achieved through satisfaction of the Body is short lived, because an ever escalating level of consumption is needed to achieve the same pleasure (as with drugs, alcohol, food, sex, etc.). Happiness achieved through Competition (keeping up with or ahead of the Joneses) becomes more of a dissatisfier than a satisfier, because we come to think only of those that have more material wealth than we have instead of being satisfied with the blessings that we do have. Happiness achieved through serving people through meaningful activity grows and grows because we come to realize that we are serving those who are created in the image of God and thus we are serving God (God s will). We are serving the children of God (love your neighbor as yourself). Finally, we achieve happiness and peace when we love and serve God with our whole heart, whole mind and whole soul.
