3 Sit Old Testament Reading 1 Kings 8:22 24, 27 29, Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven, and said, O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built! Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you this day, that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, My name shall be there, that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 4

4 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man s gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel Luke 7:1 10 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the seventh chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. After [Jesus] had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death, who was highly valued by him. When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue. And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. In our sin, we are like small children: helpless, dependent, and needy. So Jesus came to bestow His love and eternal gifts upon us. Parents could discuss, How did Jesus show His compassion on these little children? How does Jesus shower His compassion on us? MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE AND LUNCHEON We will hold our annual Memorial Day Service honoring all our veterans tomorrow at 10 am, at Evergreen Cemetery, Scranton/Carbondale Highway, Dickson City. Please bring your own lawn chair, blanket, etc., as we do not have very much seating available there. A luncheon follows the service. Doors to the Fellowship Hall will open at 11:30 am (You will be able take your time coming back from the cemetery!), and we will eat shortly after that. The $7 donation for lunch supports the perpetual care of the cemetery. 6

7 EGG STRATA BRUNCH Braille will host a brunch on June 12 after the 10:15 worship service. Proceeds will assist our congregational representative, Samantha Kamla, to attend the LCMS National Youth Gathering. Tickets for the egg strata brunch (which includes potatoes, sausage, juice, coffee/tea), are $8 for adults, $4 for children (ages 3-12). We are also seeking volunteers to make an egg strata for June 12. If you can help, please see Jane Borchin for the recipe and a baking pan. PRESCHOOL/KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION Hard to believe, but the school year is drawing to a close. We will celebrate our graduation and fly-up this Friday at 9:30 am. The teachers and students have worked very hard on perfecting their program and would be happy if you could join them. SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY BIBLE STUDY The Saturday Bible Study will conclude their spring session this week. In our through the Bible trek, we are presently in the middle of the Old Testament book of 1 Chronicles. We will resume shortly after Labor Day. We wish everyone a safe and pleasant summer. THANK YOU NOTE: Olga Kropa would like to thank everyone for their cards, well wishes and birthday greetings. Every one was very much appreciated. Thank you! ST. STEPHEN S INSTALLATION SERVICE Rev. Greg Triplet will be installed as pastor at St. Stephen s on Saturday, July 16 at 11 am. The service will be followed by a dinner at the Regal Room in Olyphant (around 1 pm). 8 WORSHIP TIME CHANGE & INSTALLATION OF PASTOR Starting next week - June 5, our Sunday service time will change. Sunday worship will begin at 10:15 am. We will continue to observe the 10:15 service time until after Pastor Zimmerman s installation. On July 24 we will return to our traditional 10 am worship service. Rev. John Zimmerman will be installed as Immanuel s Pastor at 4 pm on Sunday, July 17. We hope everyone will be able to attend. An installation dinner will follow the 4 PM service. This dinner will be very much like the Advent Dinner. The church will provide the meat, potatoes and vegetables. The congregation will bring their favorite meat, potato, vegetable, or salad dish. The congregation will also bring their favorite dessert In preparation for our new Pastor's arrival in July, our church members will stock his cabinets with pantry items. Some of the items needed to fill his pantry will include, but not limited to, the following items: Paper Products : Toilet Paper, paper plates/bowls, napkins, tissues, toweling, garbage bags, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, plastic baggies Cleaning Supplies: Swiffer with dusting cloths, wet Swiffer with pads, Mr. Clean magic erasers, dish detergent, dishwasher tabs, dish cloths/sponges, white vinegar, baking soda, towels Food Items: Canned soups, boxed pasta, tuna fish, tomato sauce, tea bags, sugar, flour, honey salt pepper, canned vegetables, canned sauces, crackers, chips, pretzels, salsa, cookies, powdered ice tea mix ALL THESE ITEMS CAN BE DEPOSITED IN THE SUNDAY SCHOOL AREA IN THE BASEMENT OF THE CHURCH - NO REFRIGERATED ITEMS Because the parsonage has no furniture or household items, anyone who has nearly new, or good furniture they would like to contribute to refurbishing the house, please contact Jane Borchin at or Marion Pencek at We will check with our new pastor to see if he would need these items. Some items we may need would be: Kitchen table and chairs, sweeper, can opener, silverware, end tables and lamps, outdoor furniture. 9

The hero confesses, I am not worthy (Luke 7:4-6), and Jesus confirms it (Luke 7:9) because abilities and accomplishments do not qualify one person more than another. And even the enemy has access to forgiveness and favor before God (1 Kings 8:41-43) because neither shortcomings nor sins disqualify anybody from His presence and power. The mighty hand of the Lord is outstretched (1 Kings 8:42) to deliver centurion and slave from the present evil age (Galatians 1:3-4).
