How great is our God CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS L) Creator God, we, who so often take the wonders of creation for granted, welcome the opportunity to make a joyful noise before you, and with one another. We come here this morning to worship and to praise you for singing us, and this world, into being. We praise you for so valuing our humanity that you entered it, becoming one with us in Jesus Christ. L) We cannot keep from expressing our joy in music and song over this wonderful gift of your love for us. We pray that our worship and our daily living will resonate with our gratitude and praise for all your gracious gifts to us. C) We confess that there are days when we are out of tune with the wonders of creation. The times when we forget that we are stewards of this fragile place we call home. Remind us, Creator God, of the damage we do when we exploit the world s resources simply for our own benefit. Help us to handle the earth gently and respectfully, always seeking to live in harmony with creation. Guide all our actions towards the renewal and restoration of this earth so that the heavens are glad, the earth rejoices, the sea roars, the fields exult and all the trees of the forest sing for joy. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Shivon Miller SONG O Sing To The Lord ELW #822 FIRST READING: 1Kings 8:22-23,41-43 King Solomon prays at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, built under his direction. Solomon prays that the temple will be a sign of God s presence and power, not only to the Israelites, but to all peoples. 22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. 23 He said, "O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and steadfast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 41 Likewise when a foreigner, who is not of your people Israel, comes from a distant land because of your name 42 for they shall hear of your great name, your mighty hand, and your outstretched arm when a foreigner comes and prays toward this house, 43 then hear in heaven your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name has been invoked on this house that I have built." GOSPEL: Luke 7:1-10 A Roman centurion stands to lose a highly valued slave. Jewish leaders in Capernaum consider the centurion worthy, but the Gentile declares himself unworthy. In the midst of this tangle of attitudes, the centurion shows his understanding of authority and his testimony that Jesus has it, even authority over illness and death. 1 After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. 3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy of having you do this for him, 5 for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us." 6 And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be healed. 8 For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." 9 When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." 10 When those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health. 3

WORSHIP SECOND SUNDAY OF PENTECOST Speak the Word Americans spend $12 billion each year on self-help materials. We purchase books, videos, and audio recordings in an effort to feel better about ourselves. We want to slim down, bulk up, and lower our cholesterol. We want to improve our self-image, our marriage, and our job. Behind all this lies a nagging sense of inadequacy or disease. A centurion asks Jesus to heal his slave but is afraid to approach him. He sends Jewish elders to plead his case. They recount the centurion s love and generosity. They tell Jesus, He is worthy of having you do this for him (Luke 7:4). He even paid to build their synagogue. The centurion feels differently. He says to Jesus, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof (v. 6). Instead of recounting for Jesus his list of accomplishments or his credentials as a leader in the Roman army, he simply says you are someone in authority and I need your help. We don t normally think of that as a prayer, but it is. We come to Christ today not with our resume or our list of accomplishments. Nor do we come with the record of our failures. In truth, none of us is worthy or unworthy of what God gives. We come to God not looking at ourselves at all. We lean instead on the power and authority of Christ. In Christ we encounter the healing and forgiveness of God. We come to be made whole. Ours is the faith of the centurion: only speak the word (v. 7) and we will know healing. Christ does speak the word. The word is grace God s grace. The word is love God s love. The word is forgiveness God s forgiveness spoken to us. And it is enough.
