2 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish News An Invitation As the summer begins to wind down the time quickly approaches when our choir will resume weekly rehearsals and singing at the 9:30am Sunday Mass. Have you ever considered becoming a member of our choir, or could you share your musical talent as a song leader or instrumentalist at any of the weekend Masses? We are always looking to welcome new (and returning) singers and/or instrumentalists to participate in and enhance our music ministry. Prior musical experience is a plus but not a requirement. All that is needed is a desire to learn and an enthusiasm to elevate our communal prayer at Mass. EMPLOYMENT NETWORK GROUP If so, Holy Martyrs now offers a special process that is tailored for those who are already well-formed in the Christian faith but who would like to become Catholic. We call this new process FOCUS and we offer it once a year. Our intention with FOCUS is to offer it at a time that works for participants, including those who may have travel commitments with their jobs. We plan to begin our next offering of FOCUS this September and would love to hear from you now if you have an interest in participating so we can determine the best day and time for all involved. Part IV Just Say Yes! In June 2014, Pope Francis addressed the leaders of anti-drugs agencies around the world. Expressing his grief and concern over drugs he said, To say no to drugs, one has to say yes to life, love, others, education, and job opportunities. If we say yes to all these things, there will be no room for illicit drugs, for alcohol abuse, for other forms of addiction. (31 st International Drug Enforcement Conference - Rome). Exactly how do we say yes to life? By embracing our faith and practicing it at home and in our communities. Numerous studies have shown that individuals with higher levels of religious involvement have lower rates of substance abuse and addiction. Furthermore, those who did engage in addictive behavior were less likely to remain long-term with their problems. Alcohol usage among teens is lower when teens are actively involved in religious activities, and also lower in teens whose mothers are actively involved in their faith. The more dangerous the drug, the more religious practice deters its use. Living the Gospel message with our young people educates them in the values that build up life! Contact the youth minister: Joe Krivos jkrivos@holymartyrs.net I was asked by Diane Bruce the September before last if I would be interested in helping with Spirit... My first reaction was that the age difference between me and the middle school students may be a bit of a barrier. I told Diane that I would go ahead and help since she asked and needed assistance. I thought I would help for the school year and then step back. I started by being a table leader and enjoyed the group of students that I was working with. We developed a good relationship and it seemed that they got as big a kick out of me as I did them. By December I was on the Core team and was involved with planning and presenting the Proclaim on some Tuesdays. I continued with the same group in their 8th grade year... The middle school students respect you and will follow if you know what is going on and what is expected of them. Now I am starting year three as a table leader and a member of the core team.
