2 The Baptism of the Lord Parish News There will be a Pre-Baptism Session held on Thursday, January 14 at 7:30 pm in Pfeiffer Hall B. This session is for parents who plan to have their baby baptized. Seniors Corner Inviting all Seniors to join us for our upcoming events: Monday, 1/18 - Forget those winter blues! Join us in Martyrs Hall, and enjoy a great Movie - with Pizza and beverages! Seeking Baptism or Think You May Want to Become Catholic? If you ve been thinking about becoming Catholic, we invite you to look more deeply into what makes Catholics tick by participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at Holy Martyrs. RCIA is a process that facilitates and deepens adult conversion to Jesus Christ by providing a way for people to come together to learn more about God in their lives and about the Catholic Church. RCIA is for those who are unbaptized, or those who have been baptized but were not formed in the Christian faith Our process provides a pressure-free, non-judgmental environment to explore what it means to live a spiritual life and to catch a glimpse of what that spiritual life looks like within the Catholic Church. Sessions are initially held on Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. and individuals are welcome to start attending at any time during the year. After a period of time, those sessions will move to mornings. Some of the sessions even entail going to other sites throughout the Greater Cleveland area to explore the richness of our religious heritage. For more information and/or to register, please contact Janet at or jpayton@holymartyrs.net. Monday, 2/15 - Straw Bale Gardens (Ohio State Extension); Nominations for new Officers. Monday, 3/14 - St. Patrick's Day Party! Corned Beef Luncheon. Entertainment by Jim Gill. PASTOR S NOTES As we settle at last into a belated Winter, our thoughts are drawn to warmer climates and happy times. Families are already making plans for a Winter getaway or a Spring or Summer vacation. Our parish is making its plan, too, to do something Christians have been doing since Medieval times: making a pilgrimage. Traveling to holy places has always held an important place for Christians. Walking where Jesus walked or journeying to the places where saints lived or are buried was and remains a deeply spiritual experience. Nearly a thousand years ago, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote the Canterbury Tales about pilgrims on a journey to the English cathedral of Canterbury. The notion of Pilgrimage is still holds an important place in the life of Christians today. Every year, millions of pilgrims from around the world travel to Rome, the Holy Land, and other religious sites to pray and visit. Two years ago, parishioners from Holy Martyrs stood in St. Peter s Square along with tens of thousands of people from all over the world to see Pope Francis and receive his blessing. We are now planning for our next pilgrimage to Rome, from March 30 th to April 8 th and we d like you to join us. In addition to a papal audience, we will visit St. Peter s Basilica and other churches in Rome, the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel; Assisi where St. Francis lived and his presence is still felt; Siena, one of the most beautiful medieval cities in the world; Orvieto, with its awesome cathedral and dramatic vistas; and the sites of ancient Rome, Ostia and Pompeii. It is a chance to see the great works by Michelangelo, Bernini, and Leonardo da Vinci, to marvel at the Trevi Fountain, and to experience the historic roots of Christianity and Western civilization. It s a chance to travel with and get to know wonderful people from our parish, to celebrate Mass each day in historic churches, and to visit inspiring religious and historical sites that can t be experienced anywhere else. A pilgrimage is not just a religious event. Our pilgrimage groups are also known for eating well, serious shopping, exploring on their own, and having a wonderful time. Those who have come with us in the past have had a great experience and memories that will last a lifetime. If you have never done anything like this before, a pilgrimage is an enjoyable, safe, and memorable way to see beautiful places, visit our Christian roots, and broaden your life experience. For information, call the parish office at Act soon. It will fill up fast. Father Steve

4 The Baptism of the Lord Parish School of Religion The Evolving Brain (part I): We have been looking at Spirituality and how it is connected with how we are hardwired for spirituality. According to Joseph Chilton Pearce, there are five brains, each building upon the other. Pearce writes: At each stage of development each new system is dependent upon the full function of the system that developmentally preceded it. Both Pearce and Ken Wilber say that a smaller and smaller portion of the human population makes it to each higher level of brain development. At the bottom of the pyramid is the old reptilian brain. This is probably what Freud would have called the Id. It s the survival instinct and the reproductive urge on a sensory-motor level. Above that is the old mammalian brain, the limbic system, which controls basic emotions of fear, pleasure, and anger. It feeds our basic emotional needs of hunger, sex, power, control, and nurturing. What Freud calls the Ego begins here. The feeling and remembering brain holds the pain body that goes deep and can even possess us for decades after we ve been hurt. This brain is necessary because it gives us the emotional intelligence by which we read the meanings and social cues of daily interactions. It can be either a helpful emotional program or a wounded and angry one. It largely resides in our unconscious, only brought to the surface by either conflict or honest insight. (Richard Rohr, Levels of Development; The Evolving Brain, from the Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New Mexico.) Second Graders begin their preparation for the Sacrament of Eucharist. Through Baptism we are initiated into the life of Christ and his Body, the Church. Our membership in the Christian community is both a privilege and a responsibility. How are we as a parish witnessing the Holy Spirit s presence to others? SECOND GRADE EUCHARIST RETREAT Have you registered your second grader and yourself for the upcoming retreat on: Saturday, January 30 at 12:30 p.m., January 31 at 12:30 p.m. or Wednesday, February 3 at 6:00 p.m. Please sign-up and list the potluck item you will be bringing to the retreat. CONFIRMATION Session three is scheduled for Tuesday, January 26 in Pfeiffer A/B from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Our eighth graders continue their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation and are reflecting on the importance of gathering for the Church community. The act of gathering joins us to the Church, the Body of Christ, and allows us to enter into the saving work of Jesus. How do we as a parish come together to pray and celebrate our unity in Christ? Have you signed up for Discovering Christ yet? week-experience-registration MASSES Bread Cup MINISTERS SCHEDULE - January 16 & January 17 EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS LECTORS SERVERS USHERS VIDEO B1 Mary Schwarz C1 Terry Adams Judith Linton Alex Ambro Jim Munko Saturday 5:30 PM B2 Steve Brownfield B3 C2 Shelley Conry C3 Ken Kuruc C4 Ed Kirk (pyx) Bart Conry NOT FILLED Jean Peterson 7:30 AM B1 Bob Yanks B2 Carol Kisilewicz C1 Judy Emmert C2 Jerry Emmert (pyx) Phil Bertemes Bob Steinmetz Jonathan Friedl William Sollenberger Gary Kozel Mary Kozel Beth Lofy Josh Bobey Jim Ack 9:30 AM Dylan Gorczyca Tim Korte Pat George 11:30 AM B1 Dick Zalack B2 Jack Holland B3 Mike Terrell C1 Dinah Lambert C2 Jen Coppolino C3 Gary Link Gordon Brain Will Hoynes (sub req) Jack Hoynes (sub req) Rich Madansky Tom Malinak C4 Dave Stankiewicz (pyx) Debbie Terrell
5 Holy Martyrs Church January 10, 2016 Medina, Ohio The Baptism of the Lord In submitting Himself humbly to the baptism of St. John the Baptist, Christ provided the example for the rest of us. If even He should be baptized, though He had no need of it, how much more should the rest of us be thankful for this sacrament, which frees us from the darkness of sin and incorporates us into the Church, the life of Christ on earth! His Baptism, therefore, was necessary--not for Him, but for us. Many of the Fathers of the Church, as well as the medieval Scholastics, saw Christ's Baptism as the institution of the sacrament. His Flesh blessed the water, and the descent of the Holy Spirit (in the form of a dove) and the voice of God the Father announcing that this was His Son, in Whom He was well pleased, marked the beginning of Christ's public ministry. Tonight s Life Night is The Wedding Feast which is about the Mass as a wedding. All High School students are welcome! 6 The Baptism of the Lord Holy Martyrs Pilgrimage to Italy March 30 - April 8, 2016 Highlights include: Assisi - city of St. Francis Siena Cathedral in Orvieto The Vatican The Sistine Chapel Vatican Museums Ostia and Pompeii Celebrate daily Mass in historic churches or chapels If you are interested in learning more about this pilgrimage, please call the church office at To go on pilgrimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art or history. To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe. ~Pope Benedict XVI
