The Church has always prayed for the sick to be freed from pain and restored to health. This sacrament originated in the healing ministry of Jesus. An anointing may be scheduled before or after a Mass or during the week. 2 Second Sunday of Lent Parish News Holy Martyrs Lenten Bake & Candy Sale will take place the weekend, April 5 & 6. We are in need of homemade bake goods, nicely wrapped and labeled for this sale. Please call Carol at Lenten Opportunities this Week at Holy Martyrs Parish Read-A-Thon - This Lent, we are making copies of Matthew Kelly s The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic available to members of our parish. This book promises to take you on a journey that will help you to live out the genius of Catholicism in your everyday life. Film Fest: Restless Heart, Wednesday, March 19, 7:00 pm in Pfeiffer Hall Stations of the Cross: 7:00 pm, Friday, March 21 Join in an evening that will inspire and challenge at River s Edge in Cleveland. Spiritual director, Carol Creek, will present Stories from the Heart: A Lenten Reflection on Wednesday March 26 th. Registration is at 6:30 with presentation from 7:00-8:30. For most of them, it is their only hope to escape the poverty in which they live, and to try to bring about better lives for themselves and their families. Details and sign-up forms are coming soon. Journeying Through Lent The following are traditional Lenten disciplines: Fasting & Abstinence: Catholics of age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, on Ash Wednesday and Good Fridays, Catholics from age fast, limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day. Prayer: Catholics are encouraged to pray more during Lent, especially with Scripture. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: Moved by the sacrifice of Christ, many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking, or buying less as they rely more upon God s abundant grace. Lent is a special time in our liturgical year and we would like to encourage all parishioners to enter into this sacred time with a sense of prayerfulness. To keep this time as sacred, all parish committees and groups might want to consider minimizing business meetings as much as possible to keep the focus and energy on our Lenten opportunities.

Bereavement Ministry of the Cluster Parishes of St. Martin of Tours, St. Francis Xavier and Holy Martyrs. The Sunday Bereavement Class meeting at St. Martin of Tours will now be meeting on Wednesday afternoons from 1:00-2:30 p.m. It will be held starting March 5th and continuing for 13 weeks. This Collection supports Catholic organizations that provide affordable shelter and training for seminarians in a region that still struggles with the effects of Soviet rule. By providing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the region. This concert is to raise funds to assist the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated portions of Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines. The typnoon caused over 5000 deaths and destroyed the homes and livelihood of 1.9 million people. General admission tickets are $15. The concert will feature solo vocalists and the Filipino-American choir, performing popular American and Filipino songs. Sponsored by the Unified Filipino-American organization.
