2 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish News November/December Activities at Holy Martyrs Give-a-Gift - If you and your family, co-workers, social group, or neighborhood friends would like to adopt a family for Christmas, please contact Donna Horton at by November 15 th. Thanksgiving November 22: Holy Martyrs Annual Turkey Run to St. Augustine s Hunger Center. Turkey Run - Father Steve invites all parishioners to donate turkeys, foodstuffs, or money for the run up to St. Augustine s Hunger Center on Nov. 22 after the 11:30 Mass. St. Augustine s Hunger Center provides over 18,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day at twenty centers throughout Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. Also, they expect to deliver over 5,000 of these meals to homebound people throughout the Cleveland area. St. Augustine hopes that the donations they receive in preparation for Thanksgiving will not only assist in providing Thanksgiving meals, but also will assist in providing two meals a day, Monday through Friday, and a special meal on Saturday and Sunday from Thanksgiving Day until Christmas. With your help, the Center has struggled to provide clothing, rental assistance, utility help, advocacy for disabled people, as well as crisis intervention to families and individuals in need. The Center is deeply grateful and indebted with the help you have given to meet these needs. Prayers for the success of the work among the poor and the disabled and donations are truly appreciated. Christmas November 21/22 and 28/29 and December 5/6: Give-a-gift slips available in the Gathering area. (Please attach gift slips to the outside of your wrapped packages. The coding on the slips represents the individual families that have requested help.) December 12/13: Last weekend to return wrapped gifts. December 14: PSR toy donation & gift cards December 12/13 and 19/20: Red stocking collection (proceeds to be used for needy families). EMPLOYMENT NETWORK GROUP If you are an executive, professional or manager who is looking for employment opportunities, we encourage you to connect with our Employment Network Group. Seniors Corner Holy Martyrs Pilgrimage to Italy March 31 - April 13, 2016 Highlights include: Milan where we will visit the Basilica of St. Ambrose; Assisi, the city of St. Francis; Papal audience; visit to the Vatican, the Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums and the catacombs; celebrate daily Mass in historic churches or chapels. If you are interested in learning more about this pilgrimage, please join us on Monday, November 23 at 7:00 pm in Pfeiffer Hall for an information meeting. 4 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish School of Religion Spirituality. What is it Anyway? The subject of spirituality can be elusive. If we are to understand its importance in our childrens lives, we first need to define it. In 1997, a twin study on religion and health resulted in a landmark scientific article published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. It determined that spirituality is a sense of a close personal relationship to God, and a vital source of daily guidance. * Memorizing creeds or simply having a knowledge of one s faith without personal investment is not enough to develop a deep personal relationship with God. For some adolescents, questioning faith is crucial to ownership, but in all cases, what makes spirituality meaningful is personal choice and ownership. So, while organized religion can clearly play a role in spiritual development, the primary engine that drives natural spirituality is innate, biological, and developmental. In other words, we are born spiritual, but in order to attain a personal relationship to God, we must be guided and encouraged in its development so that we can make a personal choice that makes this relationship real and vital in our daily lives. *Lisa Miller Ph. 5 Holy Martyrs Church November 15, 2015 Medina, Ohio Christ the King Sunday Next Sunday is the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, also known as the Feast of Christ the King. This marks the last Sunday of the Church year. Pope Pius XI established the feast day in 1925 as a way for us to remember to worship and celebrate Christ as Lord and King over all creation. Almighty, everlasting God, Who in Thy beloved Son, King of the whole world, hast willed to restore all things anew; grant in Thy Mercy that all the families of nations, rent asunder by the wound of sin, may be subjected to His most gentle rule. Who with Thee lives and reigns world without end. Amen. Thank you to all of those who helped out and participated in our Lock-In this weekend! 6 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Rooted in Faith at Holy Martyrs Because of the generosity of our parishioners who have supported the Rooted in Faith Forward in Hope campaign, Holy Martyrs has been able to replace the expired organ in church with a new and vastly improved instrument. Holy Martyrs Parish OUR TOTAL RAISED: $1,340, TOTAL DISTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED TO DATE: $231, Transparency and Accountability: The Rooted in Faith Forward in Hope Oversight Committee, Chaired by Ronn Richard of The Cleveland Foundation, meets semi-annually to review the financial statements and confirm that the overall campaign dollars are being applied to the appropriate case statement components. This committee recently met in mid-october to once again review and ensure that the highest levels of accountability and transparency remain in effect. We encourage you to visit the Catholic Community Foundation website at for updated financial information about the campaign, its distributions and other important campaign news. The state-of-the-art Allen Q 390 Organ now being installed has a three manual console, 80 stops, and 24 channels of amplification that was designed specifically for our worship space. Components and speakers will be located all around the church, which will mean a fuller, better-quality sound and an instrument that far better fits our liturgical needs. The photos on this page show workers laying the more than two miles of wiring that had to be completed before the organ console and speakers can be installed. The organ is ready for delivery. Once installed and after a few days of fine tuning it will be set to use at Sunday Mass. A new parish organ is just one concrete way that your commitment to Rooted in Faith is benefitting Holy Martyrs and will for years to come. Thirty percent of every dollar given to Rooted in Faith comes back to Holy Martyrs. Those funds are being used to develop our church and youth ministries. They are already making a difference in our parish life that you can see and hear. OUR PARISH Every pledge payment you make benefits our parish! As you know, 30% of the funds collected up to our goal return to our parish to use for our own local projects.
