Sales totaled $1, Thank you for your generosity. Appreciation is also extended to all who donated baked goods, candy, crafts and all those who donated their time after Masses. Please be aware that parking is not permitted on the drive leading up to the church. This is a dedicated fire lane. Fire trucks need to have access in the case of an emergency.
2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Parish News Come to the seminar, "A Journey of Self-Discovery," presented by Sister Cheryl Rose HM. Explore ways to uniquely grow in God s loving plan for you. The workshop will be Friday evening April 25th, and all day Saturday April 26th in Pfeiffer Hall Register before April 20th at or at jpayton@holymartrs.net. The $50 fee covers materials and light meals. We look forward to taking the journey together! Please welcome the following new families: Russ & Valerie Givens Edward & Holly Hawkins Charles & Catherine Macuga Daniel Spleha Joe Wagner William & Jean Wittrock About the Easter Vigil Baptismal Promises After the blessing of the water, those to be baptized are invited to make their baptismal promises for the first time. They may do this individually, or if there is a large group, they may do it together. They are baptized by immersion or by the pouring of water. After the celebration of baptism with the elect, the rest of the community renews their baptismal promises. All are invited to hold lighted candles at this time. Following their profession of faith, the community is sprinkled with holy water. Instead of the sprinkling, they may be invited up to bless themselves with water from the font. Either action is a reminder and reaffirmation of their original baptism events. 6 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord The Celebrations of Holy Week At today s Palm Sunday liturgy we experienced the blessing of the palms, a reminder that we are entering into the last days of Lent, approaching the heart of the liturgical year. Just as Jesus disciples accompanied him into Jerusalem to prepare to celebrate the Passover meal, we begin this week of preparation for our Paschal Triduum, translated the Three Days of Passover. For the Jewish people the Passover celebration gathers families around the Seder meal to retell the story of God s saving action in delivering the people of Israel from slavery. They remember this both as a historical event and as a present reality. Jesus did the same as he celebrated his last Passover meal with his friends, but he invited us to go even deeper into the mystery of divine life and love when he washes his disciples feet and tells us to take and eat, take and drink, do this in memory of me. Our Lenten prayers and practices of fasting, almsgiving and service have led us to this week. Participating in the liturgies of Holy Week gives us the opportunity to grow in faith as we journey together toward Easter. Tuesday ~ Chrism Mass Each year our holy oils are blessed by our bishop in a beautiful liturgy held at the cathedral and open to the public. Priests and parishioners from every parish in the diocese come to participate as Bishop Lennon prepares the fragrant Chrism oil which is used for Baptism, Confirmation and Ordination as well as the oil of catechumens and oil for anointing the sick. Each year those who will be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil, our elect, who will be baptized, and our candidates, who make their profession of faith, are invited. Holy Thursday ~ Celebration of The Lord s Supper The Paschal Triduum begins with this liturgy, in which we remember in a special way Jesus celebration of his last Passover meal with his disciples and his gift to us of Eucharist. Each of the Gospels invites us to cherish this celebration, but in John s Gospel we see Jesus washing his disciples feet, inviting all to do as he is doing, giving ourselves in loving service. People in parishes all around the world remember by including foot washing in their liturgies. Fr. Steve and the pastoral team will be washing the feet of some of our parishioners. For those who have humbly presented themselves as willing participants this has been a very moving experience. The Mass is followed by the opportunity for solemn Eucharistic adoration, a time to prayerfully wait with Jesus. Our prayer space will remain open until midnight. We remember how Jesus spent his evening in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemanes, asking his friends to stay awake and pray. Good Friday Of The Lord s Passion This liturgy begins in silence at 3pm, the hour of the death of Our Lord. The font is dry and the altar is bare. We remember the events of Jesus passion, betrayal and death. We gratefully accept Jesus laying down his life for us and remember how he forgives his persecutors from the Cross. We reverence the Cross, each bringing our own sufferings and joys to the foot of the Cross, as we pray for all around the world to receive God s gift. We abstain from meat and we fast, from not only too much food, but also from extraneous activity so we can center ourselves more profoundly. Holy Saturday There is a solemn blessing of food in the Church at 2pm. The Easter Vigil begins this year at 9:00 pm, when it will be fully dark, with the blessing of the Paschal fire and lighting of the Paschal Candle. We then enter the darkened church into which the Light of Christ enters, and so begins the most holy celebration, the high point of the liturgical year. The new waters are blessed and we celebrate the Baptisms of our newest members. With fragrant Chrism and beautiful flowers, trumpets, and singing led by the choir we celebrate the mystery of the resurrection. We rejoice with Easter Joy that the Savior of the World has Come! Our 6 new members, together with their sponsors and families, invite all to come celebrate with them at a reception to be held immediately following the Easter Vigil Mass. Easter Sunday and Season The celebration continues at 7:30 am, 9:30 am and 11:30 am. Our Easter Season celebration goes for 50 days, a very special time of our year! The Easter season is to our year as Sunday is to our week, as we pray, sing, and rejoice in the good news that Jesus is Risen! From Easter Sunday until Pentecost, we hear the Scripture proclaimed of encounters and meals with the Risen Lord, the Good Shepherd, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. We bless ourselves with Holy Water remembering our own Baptisms and we joyfully sing Alleluia as we praise the Lord. Jesus is Risen, Alleluia!
