3 Twenty-Eighth in Ordinary Time Parish News Pastor s Notes Priests Convocation SMALL GROUP NEWS! Please see today s bulletin insert for more information about small groups! Members of our Small Group Core Group are available to answer questions following all Masses this weekend. Forms to register for Small Groups are now available at the Info Center in the Gathering Area and on holymartyrs.net. We look forward to our Small Group Launch next weekend following Masses! WHY is Small Groups Ministry valuable? Why would a busy adult decide to invest their time into joining a small group? We as Catholics believe that gathering around the table of the Lord and receiving the Real Presence of Jesus Christ at Mass is the source and the summit of the Christian life. At Mass we are a large church, gathered to worship God as a community, and encounter Him in the priest, the people, the Word, and the Eucharist. We are nourished at the table of the Lord and sent to be light and leaven in our world. In Small Groups, we are a small church, connecting with other people on a personal level, discussing the joys and challenges of living out our beautiful Catholic faith in our daily lives. We come to know others, and become known by others in the safe and caring environment of Small Groups, with Christ at the center. We pray with and for each other, read or watch relevant messages, and discuss how we are progressing on our journey of faith. Small Groups helps facilitate spiritual growth in its members. Celebrating the Eucharist is primary. Joining Small Groups is a very valuable next step. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 Every couple of years the priests of the Cleveland Diocese gather with our bishop for several days of prayer, reflection and discussion about the priesthood and the future of our diocese. We completed the latest convocation this week. This year we heard presentations about the future staffing of parishes and the shape of ministry in the next twenty years. It is no secret that the number of active priests worldwide has declined. Fewer priests are being asked to take on ever more responsibilities. At the same time, the types of ministries and parish programs that will be needed continue to change. Initiatives like Discovering Christ, the Called and Gifted workshops, and small faith groups are good examples. They are the foundation of parish life in the future. This gathering of priests also celebrated some good news. The Diocese of Cleveland has one of the largest groups of young men in formation in our seminary of any diocese in the country. Though less than the number of priests who are reaching retirement age, our diocese still is doing much better than most other dioceses. Even more important, the quality of the young men who are embracing a vocation to the priesthood in our diocese is noteworthy. Their maturity, talent, and enthusiasm for ministry is inspiring. As we priests return to our parishes this weekend after these days of reflection and renewal, it is a reminder to all of us to pray for our priests. Those who are now retired and deserve our thanks for a lifetime of faithful service. Those who are actively engaged in parish ministry, who sacrifice every day for their people. And those young people who are considering a religious vocation, that they will respond to the call of God to a life of ministry and service. God s Blessings, Father Steve More and more people are liking our facebook page. Have you visited our facebook lately? Follow us on Please notify the church office in advance of a surgery or scheduled hospital stay so that you may receive the Sacrament of Anointing. The Church has always prayed for the sick to be freed from pain and restored to health. This sacrament originated in the healing ministry of Jesus. An anointing may be scheduled before or after a Mass or during the week.

5 Twenty-Eighth in Ordinary Time Parish School of Religion TIME TRAVELERS We are looking for additional adults who might be interested in helping with this ministry. The adults who are working with the initial kick-off are in need of adults who would be willing to become a part of the rotation. Many helpers makes for light work. Our long term goal is to provide Time Travelers at all our Liturgies. CONFIRMATION CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NINTH GRADERS WHO ARE CELEBRATING THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION AT A SPECIAL MASS THIS SUNDAY. May the Holy Spirit continue to bring you the joy of living the Gospel and may you be blessed to know Jesus in your life and the life of your family. You are in the prayers of all Holy Martyrs parishioners. Do Not Disturb Take Your Kids to Church (Part III of a 4 part article) Of course, there is a difference between a fussing baby and a screaming baby. As a matter of courtesy to the other worshipers, parents should always remove a child who is being loud and cannot be consoled after about a minute or so. That noted, everyone else around the family with a fussy child has an obligation to either put on an understanding, sympathetic smile and trust the parent will handle it. As Jesus said to the apostles who were pushing the kids away from him, get over your bad selves. Dr. Gregory Popcak is the Executive Director of the Pastoral Solutions Institute an organization dedicated to helping Catholics find faith-filled solutions to tough marriage, family, and personal problems. 7 Twenty-Eighth in Ordinary Time Part II of II: Making Moral Choices and Applying Our Principles This brief document is Part II of a summary of the US bishops reflection, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, which complements the teaching of bishops in dioceses and states. What Public Policies Should Concern Catholics Most? As Catholics, we are led to raise questions about political life other than those that concentrate on individual, material well-being. We focus more broadly on what protects or threatens the dignity of every human life. Catholic teaching challenges voters and candidates, citizens and elected officials, to consider the moral and ethical dimensions of public policy issues. In light of ethical principles, we bishops offer the following policy goals that we hope will guide Catholics as they form their consciences and reflect on the moral dimensions of their public choices: Address the preeminent requirement to protect human life by restricting and bringing to an end the destruction of unborn children through abortion and providing women in crisis pregnancies with the supports they need. End the following practices: the use of euthanasia and assisted suicide to deal with the burdens of illness and disability; the destruction of human embryos in the name of research; the use of the death penalty to combat crime; and the imprudent resort to war to address international disputes. Protect the fundamental understanding of marriage as the life-long and faithful union of one man and one woman as the central institution of society; promote the complementarity of the sexes and reject false gender ideologies; provide better support for family life morally, socially, and economically, so that our nation helps parents raise their children with respect for life, sound moral values, and an ethic of stewardship and responsibility.
