2 Eighth in Ordinary Time Parish News Let's Get Together - March 12th Diocesan Wide Sacrament of Reconciliation Let us look on Jesus who suffered to save us and rose again for our justification. (Isaiah 53:4-6) The sacrament of reconciliation offers to us the healing grace of God in restored relationships: not only our individual relationships with friends and family, but our relationship with God and with the Catholic Church. All are asked to join us for an Evening of Confession, March 12 from 5 8 pm. We particularly invite anyone who may have wandered from the Catholic Church to come home this Lent, through the sacramental reconcilia t i o n. F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n s e e Join in an evening that will inspire and challenge at River s Edge in Cleveland. Spiritual director, Carol Creek, will present Stories from the Heart: A Lenten Reflection on Wednesday March 26 th. Registration is at 6:30 with presentation from 7:00-8:30. Members of Holy Martyrs Women s Spirituality Team plan to carpool from Holy Martyrs front lot at 6:00 p.m. Join us at church or meet us at River s Edge! For more information: RiversEdgeCleveland.com or embecks@zoominternet.net Journeying Through Lent Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5. The following are traditional Lenten disciplines: Fasting & Abstinence: Catholics of age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. In addition, on Ash Wednesday and Good Fridays, Catholics from age fast, limit themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day. Prayer: Catholics are encouraged to pray more during Lent, especially with Scripture. Lent is also an ideal time to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for the celebration of Christ s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Almsgiving: Moved by the sacrifice of Christ, many Christians combine almsgiving with fasting, giving to the poor the money they saved by eating, drinking, or buying less as they rely more upon God s abundant grace. Lent is a special time in our liturgical year and we would like to encourage all parishioners to enter into this sacred time with a sense of prayerfulness. To keep this time as sacred, all parish committees and groups might want to consider minimizing business meetings as much as possible to keep the focus and energy on our Lenten opportunities. SAVE THE DATE for our First Annual Fore the Kids Golf Outing To be held on Saturday, May 17, At the Rustic Hills Country Club Join us for a day of golf, food and fellowship and help us support our mission and that of our sister parish in El Salvador, Immaculada Concepcion, to provide college educations for their students. 6 Eighth in Ordinary Time Meet Denny Marco One of the ways Denny is living out his baptismal call this year is to serve as a table discussion leader for the 7 th and 8 th grade youth in our new SPIRIT program on Tuesday evenings. Diane (Bruce) invited me, Denny explains, She thought that my schedule might have room for SPIRIT as the materials provided from the same group that create the LIFETEEN resources make the preparation for each session easy to do and it is working out well. As with anything in ministry, as much as you give, you always feel you get more in return. I am always learning. I am happy to be a part of SPIRIT, which is even better than I thought it would be, very well designed and appropriate for junior high teens. Even on the nights when I am responsible for a group presentation I can prepare for several hours and be thoroughly prepared. Back when I was a catechist I often spent 5-8 hours a week preparing for a class. I am really enjoying this group of kids, they are phenomenal. It amazes me how well they do and how well behaved they are even though there are so many of them; it s a large group! This weekend I get to serve as their DJ/sound and video system technician for the parish s first SPIRIT retreat. I helped to plan this retreat, and have been helping with youth retreats since the 1980 s, but my role for this one is to set the atmosphere with music, to keep the focus on the message. I bring in professional quality sound equipment and can then make sure that when a teen is sharing or someone is speaking to the group their voice can be heard. Of course Fr. Steve is a pro but I can adjust the sound and the microphone for the other speakers so that they are also easy to hear and understand. I play Christian rock during times the teens are in groups, music in the background as they transition between activities. I can link video equipment into the system as well so that even in large groups everyone can see and hear and the other retreat leaders can relax and focus on the teens. Denny grew up in Stow, Ohio, the 2 nd of 7 children, going to Holy Family for grade school and Walsh Jesuit for high school. My parents told us they would pay for our first two years, and then if we wanted to continue we would find a way to pay for it, so both my older and younger brother and I did as well as one of sisters paid her way through Our Lady of the Elms. I feel blessed to have had a Catholic education through high school, Denny adds. I first became a minister of the Eucharist when I was 18 years old, while I was in the air force. I had been in basic training for a while, which was quite different from anything my sheltered Catholic upbringing had prepared me for, but I was getting through it. I remember the first time we were allowed to go to church services and I entered the church and felt God s presence, a sense of peace and knowing that God would take care of me and that I was safe there. I knew without a doubt He was with me, and that impression stayed with me so strongly that later on when they asked for people to be trained to become Eucharistic ministers, of course I volunteered. Denny will serve as an EME here at Holy Martyrs again when fully recovered from recent knee surgery. Denny s wife, Sally, continues to serve as Eucharistic minister, usually at the 9:30 Mass. I met Sally while we were both serving as catechists, Denny smiles. I first came to Holy Martyrs in 1998 and ended up taking a Catechists theology course taught by Mary Fran Ehlinger and Suzanne Kozub. The next thing I know I am a 7 th grade PSR teacher. I met Sally as a part of that and Holy Martyrs PSR has a special place in both of our hearts, he adds, Sally served as a catechist 18 years, mostly with 8 th graders. Now she has been asked to be the primary catechetical leader for the RCIC, the process for children and teens who are preparing for baptism or first communion. I know she really enjoys working with the families on their faith journeys together. Sally and Denny have begun another new adventure as a part of their faith journey as they are doing the 9 week Ignatian Spirituality course at Walsh. My spiritual director is a Jesuit, Denny explains, and he invited me to participate in SPA, their Spiritual Program for Adults, as a way of deepening my prayer life and learning about discernment. Each day we are given a short scripture to read, and then invited to do what is really lectio divina, a careful, prayerful reading and rereading of the scripture, and then write a short journal response on how the reading/praying affects us. Sally and I are adding another part to this as we often take time to share these with each other, several times a week. We just began the process which will take us through Lent. I am finding it very helpful, both for me personally and as something perhaps to share later with other groups. Even when he is not at church, Denny s profession as a registered nurse has provided many opportunities to serve. I am working now for Akron General Medical Center in their information system department, helping physicians and their staffs with medical record systems. Denny s clinical expertise and years of experience are put to use as medical groups require tailored programs and follow up support as they begin to use the electronic record systems. Most weekends during camping season find Denny and Sally (and Dusty, their bichon) heading out on Friday night. We love it even our dog loves camping, Denny laughs. She gets so excited when she realizes we are packing up to go. We enjoy the people we meet, and the conversations we have (many about faith), and the nights under the stars, sitting around a campfire, a very good place for contemplative prayer. Last fall when Denny suddenly experienced an extended period of illness and the resulting physical limitations, he found he was unable to do even his usual routines, much less the more arduous task including closing up the camper for winter at the end of the season. It was a very humbling experience. I am accustomed to being the one who helps, who does what is needed for others. It was challenging but I literally had no choice. It was really something to see how people came forward and just did everything that needed to be done and did not ask for anything in return. Although I know God does not punish us or cause these things to happen to us, I do believe that he can use hard times in our lives to give us an opportunity to learn about love, and about how to receive love. This has been an extraordinary year for me, and my personal spiritual growth has been phenomenal. While I do not know yet what God is calling me to do next, I am grateful to be where I am and discerning his will in my life. Our community is blessed by Denny and Sally s presence and service and the witness they share to the beauty of the sacrament of marriage. Questions for Denny? Contact him at denny@pcnurse.org
