Parish Print Materials In both churches, we are introducing a new Pew Booklet that features an Order of Mass (all of the unchanging liturgical texts), an Order of Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament, and a number of devotional prayers, including ones particular to the Dominican Order. This is will replace the manila-colored cards and is intended to remain in the pews. The initial printing of this blue-colored booklet will be provisional, as we continue to consider its layout, catch errata, and respond to your feedback, which is most welcome. We hope to have a permanent version in the pews by the beginning of Advent. This Pew Booklet will supplement the white Worship Leaflets for Sunday and feastday Masses and single sheets for daily Masses that will continue to be produced weekly and that everyone is highly encouraged to use at Mass. These are always available before each Mass at the entrances of the sanctuary. Because of these materials that we print in-house, we will no longer be purchasing the quarterly missalettes that previously were in the pews at St. Vincent's. Those parishioners who would like to have something similar for private use are encouraged to purchase a hand Missal or subscribe to Magnificat ( Daily Mass readings are also available on the website of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops ( Soon, each parishioner also will receive what we are calling the Parish Handbook. This to-be-yearly publication will include general information about the Parish, its many organizations, how to become more involved in our common life, and an overview of the current year s schedule of events. Having all of this in one location will not only be a wonderful convenience to new-comers and stalwarts alike, but will also free-up space in our weekly bulletin for more topical items. 4 Mission Trip to Peru In early August, the Frassati Fellowship of Young Adults organized a ten-day mission trip to Peru. Fr. Dominic Bump and I served as chaplains for the trip, along with two Franciscan friars and a diocesan priest from New York. Fr. Walter asked me to share with you some of the experiences of the trip. The main part of the trip was spent in Laderas, a poor suburb outside of Lima, where thousands of people live in makeshift houses. The purpose of our visit was two-fold: to help with the material needs of the people of Laderas by building new homes for families without adequate housing, and to see to their spiritual needs by visiting families, offering house blessings, and giving the opportunity for people to go to confession and receive the sacrament of the anointing of the sick. Each day, most of the thirty young adults worked on the houses under the direction of a local contractor, while the priests were led from house to house under the direction of women from the parish of Laderas. During these visits, the young adults rotated so as to get the experience of visiting the families, while at the same time not overwhelming those we visited with too many people! While several of the priests spoke Spanish fluently, Fr. Dominic and I were able to receive the assistance of members of our group who served as translators, even assisting (under the seal!) with the sacrament of reconciliation. For me, the visit afforded many opportunities to see the grace of God at work in our chance encounters. At one point, my group climbed to the top of one of the tall hills surrounding the main part of the village to visit a woman who was very sick. For some reason we weren't able to see her, but on the way up we met a man walking his bicycle up the hill, and he invited us to bless his home. This led to us then being invited to bless a series of other homes on the ridge. It was a reminder that sometimes failing at what we set out to do can lead to other opportunities to do God s will. On another occasion, I noticed two beautiful cats on a door step, so I stopped to take a picture. While I was doing this, a woman opened the door, either by chance or to see what was going on. This led to us being invited in to do a house blessing. A reminder of the apostolic efficacy of a love of cats! Some of our home visits revealed a distressing aspect of life in this community. It is characteristic for homes to have at least three generations living together, but unfortunately this is often because the men of the second generation have abandoned their wives or partners. There's a tragic cycle of infidelity and abandonment that seems to keep repeating itself. And yet at the same time one could sense joy and faith in the midst of the pain and suffering. It was a reminder for me of the importance of working to encourage growth in the virtues that make healthy and happy families possible. The trip was also a chance to encounter anew my own Dominican heritage. On August 8, the feast of St. Dominic, we celebrated Mass in a makeshift chapel on the top of one of the tall hills of Laderas in an open air area illuminated by a few flashlights. I preached, assisted by a translator, about how St. Dominic would climb the mountain of Fanjeaux during the ten years he spent at the first Dominican nuns monastery of Prouille in southern France, a mountain of similar dimensions to that which we were on. At the end of the trip, our group had the chance to spend a day in Lima, visiting the shrines of St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin de Porres, and St. Juan Macias, three great 16th century Dominican saints from Lima. Encountering these saints was a wonderful chance to be renewed in the spirit of St. Dominic - now I ll have a new sense of connection with them when I look at their icons in our Guadalupe triptych at! 7 Reflections on Ethics, Faith & Health Care editor: fr. jonah pollock, o.p., s.t.l. By Fr. Jonah Pollock, O.P., S.T.L., Executive Director, Dominican Friars Health Care Ministry of New York You probably know the story of Joseph and his brothers that is told in chapters of the Book of Genesis. Still, allow me to recount it in summary: Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob, the child of his old age (Gen 37:3) and his favorite. Out of envy and hatred for Joseph, his ten older brothers conspired to sell him to slave traders while convincing their father that Joseph had been devoured by wild animals. Unbeknownst to Joseph s father or brothers, he ended up in Egypt where he was favored by God and, through a series of events culminating in his successful prediction of and preparation for a severe famine, rose to a position in Egypt that was second only to the pharaoh. His father Jacob, whose family was afflicted by the same famine, sent Joseph s ten older brothers to Egypt to buy grain. When they met the man in charge of selling the country s grain, they did not realize it was Joseph himself. Eventually, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers and invited them, along with their father Jacob and his entire household, to come to Egypt to enjoy peace and plenty. The conclusion of this story is not just about unexpected reunion Joseph reunited with his family against all odds. It is about reconciliation Joseph forgiving his brothers who treated him cruelly and about divine providence Joseph s slavery and exile resulting in the salvation of countless people from starvation. These themes present themselves poignantly at the very end of the story. Joseph s brothers had worried since their first visit to Egypt that they were being punished on account of [their] brother (Gen 42:21). Then, after their father Jacob died, Joseph s brothers became fearful and thought, Suppose Joseph has been nursing a grudge against us and now most certainly will pay us back for all the wrong we did him! (Gen 50:15). Joseph s response to them is extraordinary: Do not fear... Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve this present end, the survival of many people (Gen 50:19-20). Joseph recognized that the story of his life was dramatized, not only by human actors and their purposes, but also by the purposeful direction of God. His brothers, as actors in this play, sold him into slavery with the intention of doing harm. Nevertheless, God directed those same actions with the intention of doing good. Without denying the wrongfulness of his brothers actions, Joseph was able to appreciate how, in and through those actions, God s providential purposes came to be realized. Because of this, Joseph could forgive his brothers. He understood that the events of his life even the bad ones had been steered by God for the accomplishment of His saving plans. God made even the bad things in his life work for the good, so Joseph had no need for revenge. God had made everything right. Joseph did not need to rectify matters by striking back against his brothers. What is God s purpose for us when bad things like illness and injury happen in our lives? Does God mean those things for good, as He did for Joseph? Saint Paul says He does, that all things work for good for those who love God (Rom 8:28). But that can be hard for us to recognize. When such things are happening to us, we don t know how they will turn out. We don t have the benefit of hindsight that Joseph had at the end of his story. We do, however, have Joseph s example and the even greater example of Jesus and the promise of Saint Paul. In the midst of sickness and suffering, we can t see how God will direct the course of our lives for the good. We do, however, have every reason to trust that God will. Because of this, we can forgive. We understand that the events of our lives even the bad ones have been and will be steered by God for the accomplishment of His saving plans. God will make everything work for the good. We don t have to curse our bad luck or fight back or cast blame or unleash our anger in order to make things right. God will make everything right. We have only to trust. ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA PRIORY 411 EAST 68TH STREET, N YC WWW. DFHCMNY. ORG READ OUR REFLECTIONS AT WWW. DFHCMNY. ORG/ REFLECTIONS
