3 Every year we clergy and staff huddle over how to give you a better Advent, Christmas, Holy Week... We here find common cause with those who want to give a superlative restaurant, travel, or resort experience. Here is the group of people who crave your wow. To this end, we tweak music and decoration, programs and schedules, always believing that we can make aesthetically better and more persuasive, the message of the season. In the end though, our best gift is context. If we can help you see how Advent, or Lent, or Pentecost fits into God s great work in Christ, then we have done our job. If you come to see Christmas 2018 in the perspective of the whole Gospel, then every homily, every chant, every poinsettia has repaid its outlay ten times over. Imagine the new angle you could then gain on your work and your politics, your loving, your friending, and your parenting. In case you think I m kidding let me come across with three concrete programs for receiving the whole Christ this Christmas. I first propose that you come to our service of Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 16, at 3 pm at St. Catherine s. In readings and music you will hear the array of Hebrew longings and prophecies that Christ answers and fulfills. This service will provide a textual panorama that will make for a peaceful and purposeful celebration of Christmas. I should also note that next Sunday s service will complement beautifully, the Lessons and Carols we just celebrated on Friday in honor of the Blessed Mother. After the service, please come to a parish party in St. Dominic Hall. We think the spread will tempt you and we hope this is a chance to check in with the fellowship of the Parish before people head off in family directions. The following day, Monday, December 17, we begin the Novena of Christmas. In our Parish this will mean nine days of prayer for the safety of children, and this concern ranges more widely than ever. The prayer of the Novena will feature at all of our Masses during this period, and there you have one compelling reason to make daily Mass during these days. The other reason is the Gospel readings, which orchestrate in a beautiful sequence the births of Jesus and John the Baptist. Put together with the other readings and prayers they provide a built-in retreat that will land you recollected into the happy commotion of Christmas. The Misa Del Gallo (Mass at Cockcrow) delivers this retreat in its most concentrated form. At 6 am each morning we gather at the Rosary Altar at for a Mass and preaching that puts us in touch with the expectation we share with Mary. If the evening hours better serve your reflection we have you covered. On the evenings of December 19 and 20 we will host the singing group, TENET, in their performance of Handel s oratorio, Messiah. When George Frederick Handel was asked to compose a set of anthems for the coronation of King George II of Great Britain in 1727, some kind cleric offered to supply him with appropriate texts; the composer responded that he knew the Bible quite well enough, thank you. That Scriptural mastery marks Messiah in stellar fashion. Handel pulls from every corner of the Sacred Page to meditate on the whole mystery of Christ: Incarnate, Suffering, and Glorified. The resulting series of choruses, recitations, and arias holds the listener by its variety of texture and by its focus on the text. TENET's rendition promises to suit our church and Parish. It will have the intimacy of the original, sung by a small group, accompanied by original instruments, and performed without conductor. I recall that when VOCES8 came to sing for us in October I felt that this scale of performance suited the spatial arrangement of St. Vincent s wonderfully well. Here will come another chance to endow Christmas with even greater joy as the first movement of Christ s triumphant intervention in human history, conquering sin and death so that we could live beyond history. Hosting groups such as TENET serves our mission to connect our preaching to the cultural life of our city, and it brings new people into the amazing confines of our churches, so that these two beatific settings may do their own preaching. However you engage with the life of the Parish during these packed days, I hope that it will bring you reassurance and recollection. Advent Peace! Messiah Fr. Walter
