3 Holy Name Chapel The right panel: In the center is Chi Rho (XP) surrounded by the words: In hoc signo vinicis (In this sign, you will conquer). Constantine, the first Christian emperor, was on the verge of defeat when he saw this in the heavens. He put Chi Rho (XP) on his military banners, thus creating the first labarum, and won the battle. In this sign, XP, the name of Christ, we shall conquer in what Job calls the warfare of life. There is no true victory without it. Above this emblem is a crown studded with golden hearts. Across the top are the words of one of St. Bernard s hymns in honor of the Holy Name: Jesu dulcis memoria, dans vera cordia. This is taken from the Vespers Hymn of the Feast of the Holy Names. The translation is as follows: Jesus the very thought of Thee With sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far Thy face to see, And in Thy Presence rest. Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame, Nor can the memory find A sweeter sound than that blest name O Savior of mankind! The musical notation of this hymn, so popular in our churches, is above the inscription. The left panel contains a cross with another monogram of the Holy Name, IHS (Jesus). Our Lord s full name is thus given: left panel, IHS; right panel, XP. This is surmounted by a crown with hearts. Above this is another of St. Bernard s hymns with notation: Jesu decus angelicum... This is taken from Lauds of the Holy Name Office. Its translation is as follows: O Jesu, Thou the beauty art Of angel-worlds above, Thy Name is music to the heart Enchanting it with love. On the back of the left panel of the triptych are various brightly colored symbols and monograms of the Holy Name, Sacred Heart, and Mary: (MR) Maria; three fishes (Holy Trinity) and a combination of the Chi Rho (XP) of the Greek and the letter N or Nika, Christ the Conqueror; Sacred Heart with flames and crown of thorns; IC, XS, NIKA, Greek for Jesus Christ, the Conqueror; type of cross called the alisée paté cross, or the rounded cross. In the lower right-hand corner is the inscription: In memory of Henry and Agnes Hunt and their Daughters, Amelia and Agnes, R.I.P. The statue of the Sacred Heart is at the top. It is a wood carving in red and gold polychroming. The hands are lifted upward seeming to say: Peace, be still. An elaborate golden aureola surrounds the entire figure. A small heart is seen on top. At the foot of the statue are appropriately place the symbols of Jesus, Mary and Joseph; Maria; Sacred Heart; carpenter s square with lilies (St. Joseph); at the left of this a large IHS (Jesus) in a golden circle; and to the right, IC, XC, NIKA (Jesus Christ, Conqueror). At the right is the statue of the Blessed Virgin in red and blue with a Rosary in her hand. At the left of the IHS is the statue of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque with a flaming heart. St. Margaret Mary was a French nun of the Visitation Order and is called the Apostle of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During her life she had an ardent desire to become like Christ and to suffer with Him. In marvelous visions she was shown the secrets of the Sacred Heart and bidden to propagate its public worship in the Church. The time (17th century) was providential. The Jansenistic heresy was freezing the devotion of the Church. St. Margaret Mary was inspired by Christ to found the Holy Hour (now a popular devotion at ), to lie prostrate on the ground in prayer from 11:00 to 12:00 on the First Friday of the month, to take part in His Agony in the Garden when the apostles refused to Watch one hour with Him, and finally, to receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of each month. We see here the origin, over 300 years ago (1673), of two great devotions of the Church the weekly Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament and the First Friday Devotion. Forerunner to St. Margaret Mary in this devotion to the Sacred Heart were the Benedictine nun, St. Gertrude in the 13th century, and the Dominican Tertiary, in the 14th century. Notice the hearts around St. Catherine s stained glass window in the Friars Chapel. St. Margaret Mary s feast in celebrated on October 17. Let us repeat with fervent desire the beautiful prayer in her Mass: O Lord, Jesus Christ, Who in wondrous wise didst discover to Blessed Margaret the unsearchable riches of Thy Heart, through her merits and example, give unto us so to love Thee in all things and above all things as to deserve to have that same Heart of Thine for our everlasting home. Before leaving the chapel, we glance beneath the credence table on the right and find carved there in stone three words that should be in our hearts and on our lips: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. In passing it should be noted that this Holy Name shrine is most appropriate in because the Holy Name Society of this country is in the charge of the Dominican Fathers. The Holy Name Building, efficiently equipped for so important a work, is adjacent to the Priory. The Rosary Confraternity, likewise, has its headquarters in this building.

5 Music Notes Every week, our parishioners (hopefully) enjoy the wide variety of choral music and hymnody that is sung at Mass and chronicled in this column. That singing receives so much attention is fitting, since the voice has musical pride of place in the liturgy and chant is the official musical language of the Church. However, Monica and I additionally offer organ voluntaries before and after Mass that survey the entirety of the vast corpus of repertoire for this king of instruments. We usually thematically link the voluntaries to the Schola s polyphony sung at the Solemn Mass. For example, as this weekend we hear motets of English composer Peter Philips, the organ music is also by Englishmen. Two weekends ago (February 3), many congregants unintentionally did something rare: they stayed for the whole postlude. While this captive audience lined-up after Mass to have their throats blessed, they listened to Felix Mendelssohn s Third Sonata in A Major, Op. 65. Like many others now generally known as composers, including Bach, Bruckner, Byrd, Elgar, Franck, Handel, Messiaen, Mozart, Purcell, and Saint-Saëns, Mendelssohn not only wrote for the organ but was an organist himself. During Lent, the organ s use is limited to necessary accompaniment only, as hearing the organ is intended to be a joyous thing and the absence of it is to be missed. So in these remaining weeks before Ash Wednesday (March 6), please consider coming a few minutes early or staying for a few minutes after Mass and have a listen. In an age where exposure to live music is at an all-time low, Mass on Sunday may be for many the only opportunity in the week to hear works of the great masters for an instrument they loved. So why not take advantage of it? You may also consider spending Presidents Day at the N.Y.C. American Guild of Organists Conference on Fifth Avenue (see other blurb for more information.) Next Sunday, for the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, the Schola music of the Italian Renaissance: Anima nostra sustinet á 8 Claudio Merulo ( ) In te Domine speravi á 8 Giovanni Gabrieli (c ) New York Purgatorial Society Mass On Monday, Februaty 25 at 7 pm, a sung Requiem Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite sponsored by the New York Purgatorial Society will be offered at the Rosary Altar at. Collections February 10, 2019 Regular Offertory: $14,295 Peter's Pence: $3,768 Attendance: 1361 Legion of Mary The legion of mary welcomes membership into the counsel that meets at on Thursday afternoons at 1:30 pm. (Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception) will present the third installment in the annual Wisdom of Aquinas series with an afternoon considering St. Thomas Aquinas's reading and understanding of Scripture and how St. Thomas's wisdom can invigorate our own time of prayer and study. The afternoon will be held at the Catholic Center at NYU (238 Thompson Street) and begins with Mass at 11:30 am, includes two lectures at 1 pm and 2:30 pm, and a break for refreshments, with lunch available for undergrad and grad students. This event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested. Visit: Organ Conference on Fifth Avenue The New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presents a yearly Conference on Presidents' Day, Monday, February 18. This year's gathering, On the Avenue, will visit two of the most notable ecclesiastical musical establishments in the country, just two blocks apart: St. Thomas Church and St. Patrick s Cathedral. Recitals will be given Daniel Hyde (at St. Thomas) and Jennifer Pascual, Daniel Brondel, and Michael Hey (at St. Patrick's). 7 This Week of Grace The Holy Father s Intention for February For a generous welcome of the victims of human trafficking, enforced prostitution, and violence. The Holy See This week, the Pope will meet with the heads of bishops conferences around the world, regarding the tragedy of sexual abuse of children and young people by clergy. Pray that this gathering may further an effective global response to predatory behavior by clergy, acknowledging its extent and effect, seeking to prevent predation, and establishing credible means of accountability. February is Black History Month Pray for an increased awareness of the contributions African Americans have made to our nation s development. Pray that we may grow more aware of, and respectful of, the cultural diversity of our nation. High School This week the High School will be on winter break. Please pray for the renewal and safety of all. February 17 The Sixth Sunday of the Year This Sunday, pray for the life and witness of St. Michael s Russian Catholic Community, who are celebrating liturgies at St. Catherine s as they discern a permanent home. February 18 Bl. John of Fiesole, o.p. - Fra Angelico (Optional Memorial in the Order) Presidents Day Often, Lent has arrived by this point in February and we omit Fra Angelico s feast. A web search of his work will more than repay the effort, and will make clear why his work played an important role in the early Italian Renaissance. He lived from 1395 to 1455, and was part of the very important reform movement in our Order. Using exquisite color, he captures the serenity and joy of the heavenly life, a life already perceptible in the lives of Christ, the Blessed Mother, and the Saints. Pray for all Christian artists as they attempt to present the promise of the Gospel in so many media. On this day, we also give thanks for the memories of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, recalling the values in leadership, public life, and social justice that each represents. February 22 The Chair of Peter (Feast) Pray for the Holy Father and his intentions. Give thanks that Christ, at work in his Church, has given us a visible focus of unity in the persons of St. Peter and his successors. Ponder the global effect of the Petrine ministry, especially in recent decades. February 23 St. Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr (Memorial) St. Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna and was martyred in about 155 ad. Pray for the courage of our Bishops.
