3 Setting Out Again in Faith I believe that in God s providence the good times and bad times of life inform each other. Adversity can teach us the right way to be prosperous, and prosperity can teach us how to have adversity in perspective. In the wake of August s devastating church news about sexual abuse by clergy and its cover-up, I tried, and I am sure my Brothers tried, to offer an immediate response through our preaching at Mass on the Feast of the Assumption and the two following Sundays. A spiritual adrenalin gets one through such moments, but the long haul demands energy born of reflection. Over these past days I have been trying to seek the insight and muster the stamina to shape a parish year in light of recent developments. Neither came easily, but August declined to give me an extension. For three years we have been molding the life of a new Parish Community, and all of that work came together in the Spring s beautiful jubilee celebrations. It would be tempting to cling to that moment of happiness, to decide that we are a great parish, and thereby insulated from these painful developments. Perhaps the opposite temptation would be to suspend all normal operations and focus exclusively on this crisis. But if we are Catholic we are connected: the pain of the whole Church pains us, and her risks are posed to us as well. At the same time our Catholicism also presents us a whole way of life. The Eucharist remains itself in any crisis, and even this crisis will not be more powerful than the goodness of God. I think we will respond faithfully and fruitfully if we integrate confronting the issue with growing the life of the parish. In recent days my reading and conversing give me the impression that people want the Church to address the devastation caused by abuse, and to pursue justice for perpetrators, but also to understand the roots and patterns of this evil. At the level of our Parish I think this mandates us to pray, study, and actively respond. The latter will necessitate a safe forum in which parishioners can express their feelings about all of this. We Dominicans also need a space to let you know what we have done since 2002 to become aware of past abuse and to prevent its recurrence. A multifaceted response comports with the Dominican identity of the parish, and reflects the assurance, born of faith, that if we pursue truth we will find the goodness of God. Reflecting on our jubilee delivers that promise to me, for it is the prosperity I remember in this profound sadness. In the days and weeks ahead I will be looking for the ways to best accomplish this, but the means to prayer lie close at hand, we have already scheduled the annual all night watch at St. Catherine s for September 14 and 15, the beautiful consecutive feasts of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of Sorrows. In recent years we have observed this vigil as a way to remember those experiencing the Lord s Passion in their bodies through the mystery of sickness and also those who walk with them and experience the mystery of compassion. We can certainly include in this prayer those who bear in their bodies and spirits the wounds caused by abuse in the Church as well as those who minister to them. Please see if you can spare some time on Friday evening the 14th, or Saturday morning the 15th to be before our Eucharistic Lord. This will be time to present him with the anguish and anger of victims and their families, and also with the scandalized hearts of the faithful. Finally we need to lay before the Lord our longing for the church to be a place of safety for all her members and of transparency in all her dealings. The Bulletin has the times and types of prayer that will make up this vigil. Please watch this space for developments. The ongoing life of our parish will remind us of what we seek to protect from predators and it will disclose that abiding presence of Christ which the abuser cannot take away. Please be receptive to what is offered you in Parish Study, RCIA, and in our religious education programs. The more deeply we live the life of the church, the more surely we will be able to improve it. This Sunday I will be away from the parish. The congested summer did not allow me a chance to visit my parents in Louisville, and so I will be with them until Monday. Peace! Fr. Walter
