3 The Three Enclosed West Chapels (Concluded) Separated from the rest of the church by an elaborate iron grill and by its red tile floor, St. Patrick's Cahpel is in the northwesternmost part of the nave. The grill which is the work of the renowned Samuel Yellin, features three saints associated with Ireland. From left to right they are St. Brigid; St. Patrick, who holds the place of honor just over the gates; and St. Columba. Each of these figures is surmounted by a shield, held by two angels, upon which is shown a symbol appropriate to the siant. Beneath each figure, left to right they read: Dilexisti justitiam (:You have loved righteousness:); Ecce sacerdos magnus ("Behold a great priest"); and In mandatis ejus cupit nimis ("He delights greatly in his commandments:). The chapel's altar, with a wooden reredos, is erected against the east wall. The altar and the platform on which it stands are constructed of Connemara marble. A shield with the cross of Ulster decorates the facade of the altar. A magnificent statue of St. Patrick, supposedly carved in Oberammergau in Bavaria, dominates the reredos. The saint is clothed in episcopal vestments (including jeweled gloves, it will be noticed); in his right hand he grasps a crozier and in his left the Scriptures, while with his feet he tramples a nest of snakes. On the panel to his left an inscription in Latin says: Sancte Patrici ora pro nobis ("St. Patrick, pray for us"), and on the panel to his right there is a similar inscription Sancta Brigida ora pro nobi ("St. Brigid, pray for us"). Above each inscription there is a shield, with a cross of Ulster for St. Patrick on the left and a cow for St. Brigid on the right. The two panels on which the Latin is inscribed have as their background a field of green strewn with golden shamrocks. Overtopping the figure of St. Patrick is an ornate canopy that crowns the reredos. Among its other decorations two round towers, typical of ancient Irish architecture, are discernible. To the right of the altar there is a small niche in the wall that was used for holding some of the vessels needed for Mass. Above and to the right of the niche a bell is hung in the grill; it was rung to signal the beginning of Mass and also to mark certain moments during the celebration of Mass. Across from the altar, against the chapel's west wall, a shrine to the Dominican St. Martin de Porres was erected in the 1970s. As noted on a bronze plaque to the left of the shrine, it serves as a memorial to Fr. Norbert Georges, o.p., a member of Priory who was particularly responsible for promoting Martin's canonization. Against a marble background there stands a superb bronze statue of the saint, the work of the Dominican artist Thomas McGlynn. Martin, much of whose life was given to domestic labor, holds a broom; at his feet are two of the mice that he was in the habit of feeding. To the right of the image of the saint a small statue of the Madonna and Child is fixed to the wall. This figure was carved from ebony and mahongany in Tanzania and installed in the chapel in Finally, a stained glass window is situated in the north wall of the chapel just under the vaulting. The subject of this window is St. Patrick who, like his counterpart in the reredos, is garbed in a bishop's vestments. A scroll over his head repeats the phrase inscribed on the grill, although at greater length: Ecce sacerdos magnus qui in diebus suis placuit Deo ("Behold a great priest who in his days pleased God:). Just east of St. Patrick's Chapel is the chapel dedicated to St. Joseph. An iron grill, certainly on of Samuel Yellin's masterpieces, encloses this space, which is also distinguished by its red tile floor. At the top of the grill there are imaginative and detailed renderings of three events in the life of St. Joseph from left to right they are the marriage of Joseph and Mary, the Flight into Egypt, and the death of Joseph. Further down the grill, waist high, is a verse in Latin from the gospel of Matthew (1:20): Joseph fili David noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam quod enim in eo natum est de Spiritu Sancto est ("Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for what hast been born in her is of the Holy Spirit"). Against the east wall of the chapel is the altar, which is in the form of a table and constructed, like the platform upon which it rests, from light beige marble. A low reredos made of several different kinds of marble rises behind the altar. At its top is a representation of the Holy Spirit in the shape of a dove. Beneath that are five alabaster panels framed by six figures in niches. The panels depict, from left to right, the Annunciation, the Finding in the Temple, the Crucifixion, the Presentation in the Temple, and, finally, a domestic scene with the Child Jesus and Mary and Joseph. The figures in the niches once again from left to right are the Archangel Michael, the Archangel Raphael, the Virgin Mary, the Apostle John, the Archangel Gabriel, and another angel. Running across the top of the panels is a series of Latin words that it is impossible, for this writer at least, to make out. To the right of the altar, as in St. Patrick's Chapel, are a niche for Mass vessels and a bell. Hanging on the wall above the reredos is a remarkable image of St. Joseph within an almond-shaped mandorla decorated with intricate floral patterns, all carved in oak. Against the opposite wall of the chapel there is a marble reproduction of Michelangelo's Pieta. Tradition has it that this sculture was exhibited at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, just as the original was shown 2 1 /2 decades later at another World's Fair in New York. As in St. Patrick's Chapel, a stained glass window pierces the north wall of St. Joseph's Chapel. Here, St. Joseph is portrayed in a familiar manner, with the Christ Child in his arms. He is framed on three sides by the busts of some of his ancestors, who are recorded in Matthew 1:2-16. Above him is the inscription in Latin, taken from Psalm 80:1: Qui regis Israel qui deducis velut ovem Joseph ("You who rule Israel, you who lead Joseph like a sheep").

Bethany is a place to take a pause and do what you ve been wanting to do. We would like to welcome you into our home, and offer you an opportunity to study a perennial wisdom and how it might be applied today.
