3 Staying the Course You read these lines somewhere in the course of the metropolitan ritual of the New York Marathon. In all its phases it claims the whole weekend. The race compels. It marshals thousands to do something extremely difficult and it summons tens of thousands to watch them. The city devotes the utmost care to pulling off this massive event, and I do not hear people complain overly of the street closures. Why? The race recurs because people need it to, and not just those who run. Habitually we salute any number of qualities in athletes and in athletics, but a marathon calls us to ponder perseverance as a marvel in the runners and as a message for ourselves. Our great race asks us to admire staying the course and to receive it as a valuable image for living well. I suppose we could tease out elements of marathoning to admire. We could see the runners as those who endure to the end of a difficult task. We could admire the way they face down temptations to quit, breaking through the wall each time they hit it. In itself the act of the will necessary to this enterprise justly commands praise, but the will alone does not seem to accomplish this task. We could also fasten upon the mystery of competition. It s not just that the runner finished, but that the runner came in ahead of the other runners. Seeing a winner emerge thrills sportsmen, sportswomen, and sports-fans. But while the winner of the marathon garners lavish praise, the real triumph of it belongs to the whole throng who cross that finish line of finish lines. At that moment of completion each runner amazes us. Everyone shines and then no one does. The runner brings a determination to this race beyond the will to get through and the will to win. Consider that the runner also needs the self-knowledge for proper pacing, and the discernment to judge the shifting terrain. The one sprinting over a straightaway must remember that the hill is coming. When it does, the challenge of topography demands a creative greeting and embrace. No room for sullen resentment here. All of this the marathoners integrate, not just because they want the race to be over, but because they want to cross the finish line in a way that satisfies. Life taken as a whole can offer a similar palette of potential meaning. It easily appears as an endurance, as a series of practical and emotional challenges to be gotten through. This wisdom teaches the discipline of keeping on keeping on, and invites us to admire the determination of those who do not quit. Here the goal motivates as the end of the race, when rest will come at last. Any way of life offers such goals, but I can be most specific about the power of finish lines in priestly and religious life. My endurance will be over and my ease will begin when I, am accepted to the order, make first vows, make final vows, am ordained to the priesthood... Naturally the moment of well-being never comes because it turns out there is always a new lap to run. Sometimes too, gaining the prize offers a plan for living. The prospect of victory can pull us through life s ordeals with its own promise of rest. If I can be the best, and garner proper acknowledgment for it, then I will be satisfied with my performance on life s run. Among priests that could mean gathering the biggest congregation, raising the most money, or completing the most building projects. Here too, there is no rest since the affirmations of victory leave us hungry for more. The need to be acknowledged, to be admired, to be taken seriously never lets up. The foregoing offer productive and admirable strategies for living, but the genuinely happy life requires something more. The deepest joy resides neither in completing the race nor in winning the race but in loving the race. When we love the race of our life, we do not run against the distance, or against the other runners, or even against ourselves. We run with ourselves and become more ourselves through every step in the craft of running. Naturally we run a race with a goal in mind, but that goal enhances, not erases, each stage in the course. Having a finish line to reach helps us take the full measure of each terrain we encounter and it tailors our application of skill in that topography. In each chapter of life I recognize terrain I must traverse with profound awareness. I may not dawdle, and I may not ignore. To run well is to run consciously in the hills of the Bronx and in the winds of the bridges, to share in the thrill of starting and in the gritty determination of the 25th mile. It demands embracing the terrain of middle age and old age, of falling in love and of getting sick, of abiding here and of moving on from here. I am no marathoner, but the marathoner shows me the race that I run and the happiness I find in loving it. In November we not only host the New York Marathon, but we ponder the Communion of Saints, souls who have run the race and loved the race in countless ways to cross the line where finish really means completion, rest, and fulfillment. To this happiness, called beatitude, we set out each morning, running together in our own way, headed home. Peace! Fr. Walter
