3 Epiphany refers to the manifestation of God that occurs in Christ: Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. (John 14, 9) The Eastern Church uses this term to refer to three events that indicate Christ s presence and ministry in the world; the adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2), the Baptism of the Lord (Luke 3), and the Wedding at Cana (John 3). The Roman Liturgy also notes the link of these mysteries in the Liturgy of the Hours for today. At Morning Prayer, we say Today the Bridegroom claims his bride, the Church, since Christ has washed her sins away in Jordan s waters; the Magi hasten with gifts to the royal wedding; and the wedding guests rejoice, for Christ has changed water into wine, alleluia. At Mass, we perceive the whole mystery of the Epiphany most clearly every three years, when Year C of the cycle of readings brings the Wedding of Cana to the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. When the stars align this way the Epiphany, the Baptism, and the Wedding come at us on three successive Sundays is such a year, and it will give us occasion to rescue the above text from the realm of isn t that interesting. Here is an ancient with fresh power. The Wedding takes the lead in the composition and unlocks the whole mystery. Christ s marriage to the Church is renewed each year at the Easter Vigil when the Priest takes the great Paschal Candle (lit) and plunges it three times into the Baptismal water. Moments later, when we pour the water on Catechumens they emerge as children of God, and the Church. The omnipotent God who could do all by Himself, nevertheless chooses to partner with humanity in His work. This intent comes clear in the first of Jesus signs at the wedding at Cana. The Creator who possesses the power to make something from nothing, chose, through the ministry of Christ, to build his sign upon the foundation of what people had to give. When Jesus orders the waiters to fill the six stone water jars to the brim with water, He maximizes human contribution to a divine deed. He will make God s dignifying purpose equally clear at the Multiplication of the Loaves, a sign He builds on five loaves and two fish people have to give. Let us pause for a moment and reflect on how it is we have the faith. By faith we grasp what God reveals at this point in the year; the Immaculate Conception, the Virgin Birth, the fullness of humanity and divinity in Christ, his manifestation to the Gentiles, and finally the nature and effects of Baptism. These things we could not perceive, save that God revealed them, and yet we received these elements of revelation thorough the writing, preaching, singing, and living of people. By whose words and example have you come to believe? Today you are at Mass to acknowledge that Christ is Son of God and Son of Mary, and you do so as a child of God and a child of the Church. But marriage is never just about having children. Part of its mystery is the way God uses the spouses to form each other in singular intimacy of being a couple. In Christ, divinity and humanity couple so that divinity shapes humanity to make it, insofar as possible, compatible with itself. Suddenly, the Gospel appears in the world to put sinful human beings on a new footing with God, so that we no longer come groveling before Him, nor do we stay away from fear. We are those of whom Christ says, I no longer call you servants, but my friends. He refers to a bond of intimacy in which our approach to God and neighbor sheds all manipulation and acquires the candor of those who in the end have nothing to fear. We hope by this relationship, to enter heaven, not as those let in by condescension, but as those who because of God s amazing intervention now belong there. Baptism marks the beginning of this relationship and at each Eucharist God decants the wine saved for last. He offers a banquet in time that whets the appetite for the banquet beyond tine. For such a thing, the Magi will trek across the nations. The adoration of the wise men inaugurates Christian worship, which flows not from humiliation or subjugation, but from gratitude and delight. If you took the trouble to read these lines, you probably long for the healing and renewal of the Church. That will come when we truly accept what God has constantly offered in Christ. For if we come to recognize how fundamentally and entirely we are loved, then we will at last see our fellow wedding guests as those who are due the love that dignifies and liberates, never manipulates, oppresses, or violates. In these weeks of Epiphany may we discover who we are in God s sight, and, thus delighted, invite others to the wedding feast. Peace! Fr. Walter Three Sundays of Epiphany
