3 Staff I write these lines on what is for you last Monday. The days between my writing and your reading promise to be laden with news, so rather than attempt timeliness, let me project into your present what now sits fresh in my mind. In the days following President s Day, our Parish Staff had an In-Service week. From Tuesday to Friday we met each afternoon to plan the Parish year of At the surface this means reckoning with the mysterious movements of the date of Easter, finding out on what day of the week Christmas falls, and rearranging everything else accordingly. Indeed it gives joy to survey the apparently vast expanse of time from Labor Day to Corpus Christi and realize how much parish life one must creatively cram into it. Actually, the process feels to me like preparing an elaborate Italian gravy over many hours. First you put in the base ingredients, which are the Easter cycle, from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost, and the Christmas cycle, from the First Sunday of Advent to the Baptism of the Lord. These simmer as we figure out how the circumstances of this coming year will make their celebration unique. Then we add the feasts of Christ, the Blessed Mother, and the Saints: where they land in the week will determine what we can emphasize this year, and that changes the flavor. At this point we have a stable, bubbling base and we stir into it, Religious Education, RCIA, Parish Study, second collections, charitable drives, retreats, and meetings of the Finance and Pastoral Councils. The stirring here will need the help of a number of parishioners who give themselves with amazing generosity to the life. So meetings with heads of parish organizations now follow, and they will add texture to the dish. No two years, and no two sauces, come out the same. Finally, we have to take the pot off the heat and figure out how to publicize and pay for what we have created. Nine years have not taken the adventure out of this project. But even more worthy of reflection is what comes out during this shared work. As we work through the mechanics of dates and times we also give our busy selves a panorama of the whole parish year, and with that comes an appreciation of what other people do. For me it comes as a reality check and a point of conversion to realize my absorbing work stands small next to what everyone does. A staff is the group that sees one s work up close and will offer praise, critique, and help. Likewise, those who take on leadership as volunteers can tell us how our plans impact people, and if our dreams can be done. All of this creates a conversation that gives parish life a foundation more stable than one person s will or whim. In our case this conversation embraces clergy and laity, men and women, Dominican and non-dominican, employee and volunteer. It also comprises three generations of perspective. It s a complex process that pays tribute to a complex parish and the numerous entities associated with it. Indeed, the process grows in texture along with the institution(s) it serves. I share a reflection on internal administration because it occurs to me that complexity is a virtue for our times. In practice people do not like the way meetings and protocol elaborate life. But there is no substitute for what we discover by means of each, and there is no way to quantify how each taps the potential of people and situations, reveals weaknesses, unmasks conflicts, and undergirds solidarity. Structure can slow things down, but it also conforms ideas and ideology to reality. Understandably enough, we now distrust institutional complexity as a cloak for misdeeds, or as a structure to be manipulated. Perhaps a key to renewal in the Church, and outside it, is not to circumvent complexity or topple it, but to shine a light on it so that we recognize it as a thing of beauty that serves us. I think that when people ask for transparency this is what they mean. Let me propose this is as a fitting time to rediscover the beauty of the Church s complexity as set forth by the Second Vatican Council in Lumen Gentium, its Constitution on the Church. It would be timely, also to read the United States Constitution and renew our acquaintance with the difficult beauty of our system of checks and balances. The particular complexities of our Church and our State have been simmering for centuries. They have borne cumbersome results and they have been subject to manipulation, but they have also given scope to remarkable enterprise and creativity. In our nation and in our Church, the structures of governance have been used for injustice and they have promoted justice and reform, in extraordinary fashion. Vatican II shone a light on the ancient structure of the Church so as to rediscover its potential for good, and this should inspire us to do it again. The Holy Spirit of Pentecost will not be lacking if we have that conversation that seeks the good from the many. Blessings on your preparations for Holy Lent. Fr. Walter

Lenten Fasting and Abstinence According to the Current Discipline: Laws of Days of Abstinence: For all aged 14 and older, obligatory abstention from flesh meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent. Laws of Days of Penance: Applies to all the Faithful during the entirety of Lent and Fridays outside of Lent. Laws of Days of Fast: For all aged 18 to 59, inclusive, one full meal permitted and two other meals, which, when combined, are less than a full meal, on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Law of the Eucharistic Fast: Complete fast from all food and drink (excluding water and medicine) for one hour before the reception of Holy Communion. This applies throughout the year. Collections February 17, 2019 Regular Offertory: $15,547 Attendance: 1098 February 24, 2019 Regular Offertory: $13,677 Attendance: 1140 Lenten Liturgical Observances The penitential season of Lent (from the Old English meaning spring and also known as Quadragesima in Latin, meaning fortieth ) begins on Ash Wednesday. In Lent, violet vestments are worn and the Gloria and Alleluia are omitted. According to the General Instructions of the Roman Missal, the document governing the celebration of the Ordinary Form of the Mass, the organ is to be used only to give necessary support to the singing. Thus, as much as possible, the Mass is sung a cappella, the hymn accompaniments are subdued, and the organ voluntaries are omitted. As the Church strips herself of festal trimming entering into the spiritual desert, her faithful are likewise called to a heightened order of penitence, fasting, abstinence, and almsgiving. Making a good confession, attending daily Mass, and praying the Office, Stations, and Rosary are all worthy resolutions. National Pilgrimage to Lourdes Fr. 7 This Week of Grace Ash Wednesday stands at the center of this week. As we prepare to enter upon Lent, the Antiphons of this day s Mass may speak to us. The Entrance Antiphon You are merciful to all, O Lord, and despise nothing you have made. You overlook people s sins, and bring them to repentance, and you spare them for you are the Lord our God. From the Book of Wisdom Chapter ll, verses 14, 25, and 27. Note that the very first words of Lent have the tone of confidence and transformation. We may well ponder our faults, but always in the light of how God regards the work His hands. The Communion Antiphon He who ponders the law of the Lord day and night will yield fruit in due season. From Psalm 1, verses 2 and 3. This is an invitation to receive communion today as an opening to a deeper reading not only of the text of Scripture, but of the Law that is Christ himself, a law now written inside us who receive the Eucharist. Here too, we encounter confidence that our pursuit of the Gospel as a pattern of life will not fail to yield fulfillment for ourselves and others.
