JOHN VIEN For those of who were not at the Masses at which I presided and preached last weekend, I want to share with you some words from my homily. I am grateful to all those who have expressed support for the parish and for me, and I m energized by the many people that want something good to come from this. What could that be? I can t wait to find out! I hope that we will pray and dream and plan together so that this moment of difficulty can be transformed into a moment of grace. Friends, I will admit that I ve had a week where I didn t want to get up from under the covers on a few mornings. During this past week s sad events with a canceled Kindergarten baseball game, a viral Facebook rant, and the ensuing press coverage that painted our parish in a negative light, there were times when I didn t want to get out of bed and times when I didn t want to answer the phone. Like many of you, I was embarrassed, angry, and sad. But rather than hide from our problems, you and I are called to face them with the fortitude of the Holy Spirit. I ve said that these incidents are a teachable moment, so we have much to learn from them, and we'll consider this as a parish family in the weeks and months to come, but let me state a few things unequivocally. First, the Archdiocese and the Catholic Youth Council would never schedule any game at any place they thought would be unsafe. The safety of our children is our primary concern, just as it is for parents. Second, after talking with many of the folks involved in this, I really don t believe that this incident was racially motivated. But, let s be honest. One cannot have safety concerns about an area in St. Louis, post-ferguson, and not have it turn into a racial issue. Safety is a buzzword, and we all know it means more than safety. And I do not think that is bad. It is important and essential for us who live in Webster, Glendale, and Oakland to acknowledge the implicit racism and white privilege that we may have. Racism is always a sin, and it is something for which we as a nation and individuals must always seek healing and offer repentance. Third, we need to be aware that our actions always affect others. We are all connected, for we are one body in Christ. As St. Paul reminds us, if one member hurts, we all hurt. If one suffers, we all suffer. If one makes a mistake and if one sins, it reflects on all of us. In our day and age, perception is reality. If we re honest, we know that the perception of Mary, Queen of Peace by others in our community is not always positive. We re thought to be a little insulated, a bit snobbish, too competitive, and you can fill in the rest. That s the perception, but the reality is that this is a community of faithful, generous, committed Christians. But we ve seen how the actions of one or a few can damage that. We are all One Body. Finally, we must always be kind and charitable. Always. Even on Facebook and social media. Maybe especially on Facebook and social media. Do not post something that is hurtful or inflammatory. Just don t. Stop. You know, there s a lot more to being Christian than being kind, but if we are not kind, we are not Christian. So each one of us is called, I think, because of these incidents, to examine our hearts, our consciences, our motivations, and our convictions. And if we find there that we have any trace of hatred, racism, animosity, anger, or fear, let us pray that it be purged so that we can be made whole and so that our parish and our community can heal. The Spirit, who comes to us today at Pentecost, will help us heal. And the Blessed Mother, our patroness, will show us the way with her tender care and love for us. So today, pray for wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and reverence. Pray for the grace to live your Catholic faith with pride and with confidence! Pray for the grace to witness to Christ by all you say and do! Pray for the grace to make good choices, to repent of your sins, to grow in grace. With confidence, let us join in the Church s unceasing prayer for the Spirit s gifts: Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest! And in our hearts take up thy rest! Come with thy grace, and heav nly aid, to fill the hearts which thou hast made, to fill the hearts which thou has made!

Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Parish Office about changes to your record, please let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. Thank you for your help! Guide Book & Directory Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions & events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided & direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church; it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It will pay to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory. Respect Life Essay written by Mia Fiordelisi, MQP 8th Grader How can living a life of chastity protect you from abortion and lead you in a life of happiness? Dear Future Husband, I have chosen to save myself until I have married you. We may not know each other, but I know that we will truly love each other. Al I ask is that you save yourself, too. If we both do this we can live our life without any complications involving chastity. We will not have to go through the struggle of abortion or sexually transmitted diseases. We will be able to live a life of love for each other, not having to deal with the question of why or how, and not be filled with regret when we get married. If I save myself for you, it is only fair for you to save yourself for me. I know it may be tempting but if something happens where someone ends up getting pregnant, we may never meet. There could be years of unhappiness and denial. If the situation turns to an abortion, you will be filled with regret, and still years of unhappiness. This is not only going to make us happy, but also the other people that we will have loved will be happier too. If one of us, or both of us gets a sexually transmitted disease, then that could affect our lives together in the future. I am not the only one asking this, but I know that God has asked us too. For the Bible states: For this is the will of God, your holiness, that is, that you will abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3) This means not to sleep around in or out of marriage. Please, not only do this for me, but for yourself too. I know that you are worth the wait, but so am I. Love, Your Future Wife Page 3
