INFANT BAPTISM: Baptisms are celebrated on Sundays after the 11:00am Mass. Baptism Preparation Class is offered on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm at the Rectory, and is required of first time parents. Contact the Parish Office to register. ANOINTING OF THE SICK: If you are anticipating surgery or are sick or homebound and would like to be anointed, please contact a Priest or the Parish Office. ADULT INITIATION: Adults are received into the Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) usually celebrated at the Easter Vigil after participating in a process of Christian formation and education called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). Please contact the Parish Office for more information. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE: Couples wishing to be married at MQP should contact the parish as soon as possible after engagement and at least six months before the proposed wedding date. At least one of the couple should be a practicing Catholic, registered and living in the parish. A program of marriage preparation is required. Please contact the Pastor or the parish secretary for more information. VOCATIONS TO THE PRIESTHOOD AND RELIGIOUS LIFE: Any young man interested in the priesthood or any young person interested in the religious life is encouraged to contact the Pastor or to call the Archdiocesan Vocation Office at All Catholics are called to pray for an increase in religious vocations. 3 A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN THIS WEEK AT MQP... This weekend we begin our Advent journey toward Christmas. As we light the candles of our Advent wreath one by one over the next four weekends, let us be more and more aware of Jesus Christ, the light who is coming into the world. At this time of year, as winter approaches, we need light more than ever. And as our world seems so dark at times, we need light more than ever! May the lights on our Advent wreath and the lights that grace our homes and trees remind us that Jesus Christ is the true light the illumines the darkness of the world. Come, Lord Jesus! This past week, the Second Graders of MQP celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. Congratulations to them as they receive God s mercy and love in this beautiful sacrament, and thanks to their parents, teachers, and catechists who prepared them for this day. My prayer is that regular Confession becomes a part of their Christian life, that they turn again and again to the mercy and love of Jesus celebrated in Reconciliation. Advent is a fine time for all Catholics to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in preparation for Christmas, so I encourage you to make time in the weeks to come. Confessions are always heard on Saturday afternoons from 3:45 until 4:45pm. On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 23, Fr. Aaron and I will be available for Confessions after each of the Sunday Masses. Our Advent Reconciliation Service will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Parish on Monday, December 17, at 7:00pm. The Advent season always brings special feasts in honor of our Blessed Mother. Next Saturday, December 8, is the Feast of Mary s Immaculate Conception, when the Church remembers and celebrates that Mary was kept free from sin from the very moment of her conception in her mother s womb. In a mysterious way, and in God s own time, Mary shared in the salvific and redemptive act of her Son s death on the cross even before she was born. The Immaculate Conception is the patroness of these United States of America, so this feast is always a holy day of obligation in the USA. We will celebrate Masses for the holy day on Friday, December 7, at 5:00pm and on Saturday, December 8, at 8:00am. In addition, December 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. In 1531, Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, giving him a message of consolation and hope for the indigenous people who were being oppressed by the conquistadors and asking that a Church be built in her honor. Juan Diego was a reluctant messenger, but he went to the Bishop with Our Lady s request. Miraculously, in his tilma was imprinted an image of the woman he had seen, a woman with features like his, pregnant with child Our Lady of Guadalupe. This feast is so important to our Hispanic brothers and sisters, but it should be important to all of us who live on this American continent. The Blessed Mother appeared on our soil, reminding us that we are all her children, that we are all brothers and sisters, and that she has a special need for those who are oppressed. Next Sunday, December 9, Fr. Aaron will celebrate the 11:00am Mass in both English and Spanish, with special prayers, devotions, and processions in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. A reception with Mexican treats will follow in the School cafeteria. Please spread the word and please come! As we begin our Advent journey toward Christmas, may I encourage you to draw near to Our Blessed Mother, Mary, the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe, and to seek her intercession and assistance. 5 OUT OF THE MESS. This space this week is an invitation to you. Each Advent for the last eight years, I ve prayed this novena prayer. The prayer is known as the St. Andrew Christmas Novena. Often people start the novena on the feast of St. Andrew (we missed that already), but many begin the first Sunday of Advent. The prayer is to be offered 15 times a day, each day until Christmas. It is recommended that you choose a specific intention for your prayers. What I love most about this prayer is the way that it sets a certain cadence of preparation for the coming of Jesus. I usually pray the words 5 times in the morning, 5 times spread throughout the day, and 5 times at night. Won t you join in this year? Hail, and blessed be the hour and moment at which the Son of God was born, of a most pure Virgin Mary, at a stable at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold. At that hour, vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, to hear my prayers and grant my desires.
