3 A NEW WEEK FR. JOHN VIEN THIS WEEK AT MQP... Here in St. Louis, with our big Mardi Gras celebrations on a Saturday, many folks don't even know that Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. But actually Mardi Gras is more than just a Tuesday or a weekend! True revelers will tell you that Mardi Gras is a whole season, and we are in that season right now. The season is called Carnival. Carnival marks the time between winter and spring, and between two liturgical seasons, Christmas and Lent. The name Carnival comes from the Latin words carne vale or farewell to the flesh. Perhaps it could be translated as putting meat aside. During Carnival, people do whatever they have to and can do to make ready for Lenten fasting. The days of Carnival begin with the Feast of the Epiphany and last for several weeks until Mardi Gras, the day before Ash Wednesday. This year Mardi Gras is Tuesday, March 5, and the next day is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. We all know that winter can be a miserable season, with long stretches of grey skies, cold weather, and dangerous storms. Perhaps that encourages people to develop their inner world, the world of fantasy and imagination. Carnival is a season for music, plays, art, and also for wild behavior and for wearing disguises. People try to get the wildness out of their systems before the serious and reflective season of Lent begins. Carnival festivals have become major tourist attractions in many cities of the world. In many places, the dusty Christmas decorations are left up and smothered with Carnival confetti and decorations. Italy begins its Carnevale as soon as Christmastime is over; the city of Venice is known the world over for its raucous Carnevale festivities. In the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, street dancers move to the rhythm of drums under showers of confetti. German cities such as Mainz, Cologne, and Dusseldorf hold Karneval parades with elaborate floats. In Munich, masqueraders dance with decorated hoops. In cities along the Gulf Coast of the United States, Carnival is an old tradition. Mobile, Alabama boasts the oldest celebrations, but the most well known is in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Big Easy boasts over 100 private masked balls and features dozens of parades featuring marching bands and elaborate paper mache floats with costumed and masked floaters tossing beads, trinkets, and doubloons to the crowd. On Mardi Gras day, the largest and longest parades are held. Rex, the King of Carnival, is usually a prominent business person, chosen by secret committee. His queen is always a debutante of the current season. So why am I writing about all these Carnival festivities? Well, truth be told, I love the traditions and festivities of the season. But mostly, it s good to know that these days are Christian, even Catholic, in their origins and that they have a long and rich history in our world and in our Church. There s nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun during these long days of winter, especially if we plan to take Lent seriously. So, go to the movies, visit the Art Museum or the Garden, listen to some great music, eat a donut, have some more pizza, wear bright colors, throw a party, and act a little crazy. After all, Jesus did say that he came that we may have life, and have it in abundance! We pray for the repose of the souls of Timothy Michael Kiely, Sr. Father of Karen Russo Will Smit Son of Will and Kay Smit May God welcome them home, fill them with peace and bless all those who mourn their loss. 5 OUT OF THE MESS. From Melissa Hunter, Director of Faith Formation Recently I was reading about the Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott of the 50s. In the midst of that protest, a bomb went off in the home of Martin Luther King Jr. while his wife and baby were inside. No one was hurt. As news of the incident spread through the town that night, a crowd of protestors grew outside the home. In fear of the tension that was building, the police turned to King to control the crowd. From his porch, King painted a passionate picture of a Civil Rights movement that would be characterized by a loving embrace of the enemies, instead of a violent fight against those who violently resisted social change. Weekly Offertory Summary January 27, February 19, 2019 Last Four Weeks Offertory $ 145,099 Four Weeks Offertory Budget $ (136,000) Surplus/ Shortfall: $ 9,099 Four Week Average $ 36,275 Weekly Goal $ 34,000 Please call the parish office, , if you are interested in enrolling with online giving. We must love our white brothers, no matter what they do to us. We must make them know that we love them. Jesus still cries out in words that echo across the centuries: Love your enemies; bless them that curse you; pray for them that despitefully use you. Martin Luther King Jr. This is not the space for an in-depth look at the sociology behind the success of the Civil Rights movement: though it is fascinating. Instead, I ll just say this People annoy me. People hurt me. People make me angry. People betray things I believe in. People mistreat my space and my things and my friends and my heart. And, loving the people it makes the least sense to love is not an easy calling. But it changes the world. Who should you love a littler (or a lot) better? (Hint: It might just be the very last person you want to love ) Melissa Hunter serves as the Director of Faith Formation at MQP. She spends most days trying to sort through the mess of her life so she can see Jesus. You can reach her via at mhunter@mqpwg.org GIVE A MEAL A MONTH (GAMAM) Please consider donating the following items: Corn muffin mix Jello Instant pudding Canned chili with meat Canned Pork N' Beans Sugar (no more than the 1 lb size) Bar soap Deodorant Please drop items off in the Msgr. Lubeley room by 11 am this Sunday, Feb. 24. They will be sorted and delivered to the St. Wenceslaus parish food pantry. FEBRUARY 24, 2019 SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
